Pep Band heading down to KSU

Mike Bohn approached Matt Roeder the Marching Band director with the wish of taking a pep band to KSU and Matt agreed, so there will be a 50 person band making the trip. A lot of band kids are also making the trip just as fans so we'll have a good amount of loud students.

Is anyone tailgating there? I'd love to stop by, chat and get away from annoying KSU fans.

i was just mentioning today to ubt that it would be GREAT to see about flights in and out. he says our frequent flyer miles are for hawaii.

Woot! Yay! i think colorado may have one of the Worst traveling fan bases in the country... You remember watching the clemson bowl game/? i think we had 50 people there. lol

You mean when our HC was fired and we were getting blown out of just about every game? Yeah. I don't blame our fans for not going to that game. I think we have a good traveling fanbase. I've been to the fiesta and the cotton bowl and we had pretty good turnouts. Even had a decent turnout in hawaii for the hula/aloha bowl. there are definately worse fanbases out there.

good deal on the band traveling. that was one of my favorite parts of the asu weekend when they had the pep rally at the double tree. it was also pretty cool when they showed up at the alumni tailgate.

I disagree. We travel pretty damn well in September for our OOC games. Hell, I have actually been amazed at how many folks I know who have been travelling in for home games as well.

You can't just paint our fan base with a broad brush like that.

We aren't up at the top, but I think our fan base has started travelling increasingly better.

The "CU doesn't travel well" arguement should come as no surprise. But it's not a knock on the fans. It's simple geography. My friend google maps and excel helped me run some analysis to drive home the point.

Avg Miles b/w B12 campuses: 524
Avg Miles b/w CU and other B12 campuses: 740

Three longest road trips in the B12:
CU-UT - 1082mi
CU-A&M - 1067mi
CU-BU - 981mi

Three Longest Road Trips among B12North teams
CU-MU - 747mi
CU-ISU - 722mi
CU-KU - 585mi

Three Longest Road Trips among B12 South teams
UT - OSU - 448mi
TT - OSU - 440mi
TT - A&M - 435mi

Three shortest road trips in B12
OU-OSU - 82mi
KU-KSU - 84mi
BU-A&M - 92mi
(shortest CU roadtrip - NU - 500)

Distance from other B12 campuses
Max Avg: CU - 740mi
Min Avg: OSU - 393mi

Round trip from Boulder to every other B12 campus is 16.3 thousand miles. That's 2.7 thousand miles more than #11 ISU and 7.6 thousand miles more than #1 OSU.

A weekend road trip is more attractive when the distance to the opponent is <400 miles.
# of rival B12 campuses < 400 miles away
7 OU
6 KU, KSU
5 BU, NU, OSU
4 ISU, MU, UT
3 A&M, TT
0 CU
Assuming gas = $2.75/gallon and the car avg 22mpg, a CU fan will spend $2,035 in gas and be on the road 296 hours (at 55mph avg speed). This is 41% more than the B12 average.

This doesn't even consider the B12 championship locations (San Antonio, Houston, KC, Dallas, and St. Louis), which further disadvantages the CU roadtripper. Throw in the asthetic desirability of other B12 locations (i.e. Proximity to beach, mountain, national park, etc.), and lack of a major airport with direct flights near B12 schools, it's no wonder CU fans have a reputation for not travelling well. That's not a knock on the spirit or desire of CU fans to travel, but the harsh geographical reality that it takes a CU fan 41% more time and gas money, not to mention hotel and vehicle wear and tear to follow the Buffs on away games.
Bottom line: Road tripping in and out of Boulder is a bitch, and can't be done without taking time away from family, off from work or away from class in a disproportionate level relative to the rest of the conference.

wow skid!

i will say this:

my b12 tour is infinitely easier based right where i am. six of the teams are within about four hours drive time. after tech, a&m will be the only south team left on the checklist.

There's also the factor of every destination in the Big XII other than Boulder (save for maybe Austin) is a ****hole. Notice how well the Buffs travel to places like Tempe, Miami, Athens, and Tallahassee...

Every NU fan will tell you that Lincoln is a beautiful place...

Lincoln smells like Greeley; so does Manhattan...and Ames....

The last time I went to Lubbock, there were children playing in rubble. Seriously, it reminded me of every image of Bosnia you've ever seen where little kids were playing in rubble of a house that got blown up by mortars.

There was a very large contingent of CU fans in Tempe this year. I'd guess about 7,500. We were in little pockets all around the stadium, too. Not just in one glob in the end zone. CU fans do travel well, but only to places we actually want to see. Bowl games are tough, because you never know where you're going until the last minute, when getting a decent fare and accommodations can be difficult.

Your point is taken. But travel isn't only about places. It's also about people. There are some good times to be had on or around otherwise desolate B12 campuses.

Austin UT- Zilker Park, Barton Springs & Town Lake provide more than sufficient hiking, jogging and "bird watching" opportunities. The music scene in Austin is top drawer: SXSW. Catch a band at Stubbs, or dozens of other bars with stages.

Waco/BU: First impression is that it's a truckstop town on the interstate. As Floyd Casey Stadium is miles away from the BU campus, it's easy to miss the best part of the trip. Baylor's campus is among the most pleasant in the B12. The architecture is a combo of stately Georgian brick and brand spanking new cutting edge facilities. A walk along the banks of the Brazos River and the stream through campus is to be enjoyed. Baylor's live bear mascots live in the middle of campus in a top class habitat. (Sure would be cool if Ralphie IV was so accessible) Baylor memoralizes hundreds of fallen soldiers. Each lamp post tells a poignient story. Very classy.

A&M- Chicken Express has the best fried chicken ever. A&M has strange fans, strange traditions, a Bush Library and a golf course on campus. Nothing to gush about except for the chicken.

Norman - OU. Get ready for "Buffalo Burgers" because that's the first thing on Sooner fan's mind when CU attire is spotted on campus. For a good time, blow off Norman and head up to Bricktown in OKC. This is a thriving sports and entertainent district on the SW fringe of downtown. There are more places to grab a drink, watch a game, or oogle than could be done in one weekend. Think LoDo meets San Antonio Riverwalk. That is Bricktown.

Stillwater/OSU - Eskamo Joe's It's the epicenter of OSU pregame and postgame festivities. If Hard Rock Cafe were to do NCAAFB, it would be Eskamo Joe's. The campus resembles Ft. Fun with 1950's style buildings with a ton of money getting poured into the stadium and athletic facilities. The term "student-athlete" turns on it's head in Stillwater.

Lincoln - Not much to say that this board doesnt know. It's a big gray concrete stadium with steep steps near rail road tracks and grain elevators. Their Bar district on "O" street is Pearl Street without the granola. I remember going into Knickerbockers and having a ball.

Manhattan - KSU. There is no "there" there. The town sneaks up on you. 2 miles out of town on HWY 177, you don't see anything and you swear you must be lost or have bad directions. Turn a corner and drop into the town that exists in some other time-space continuum. It's an experience right out of Michael Jackson's Thriller video; think zombies in purple. Never before or sense have I felt so alone among so many people. Post game excitement is at the Manhattan Town Center Mall Food Court. An Anne Rice fan would dig a Manhattan halloween. Freaky little city. Boo!

I'm trying to figure out your point here. A major airport ~35 miles away doesn't count?

It is approximately 45 miles from DIA to Boulder.

I think it is safe to say that there is a major airport within a comparable distance of most of the schools in the Big 12?

Ok, so I was off by 10 miles. What's your point about airports? How does that make the distance to be traveled any less?

Bull ****!

MU? St.Louis or KC (Columbia is a puddle jumper)
ISU? KC. De Moines? Don't think so.
NU? KC. Omaha is a regional, unless you have access to a Corp jet.
KU, KSU. KC. Lawrence may be comparable. KSU is 90 miles beyond.
OU, OSU. OKC is a small market airport. Too bad SWA doesn't do direct flights. Stillwater is boonesville. DFW is the connection.
BU. DFW. 100 miles. Been there, done that.
TT. Lubbock - Denver is not a SWA direct flight. Very limited and expensive direct flights.
A&M - Houston. That's a big drive.
UT - Some direct flights, but stopover in DFW is likely. Only campus in B12 where taking a taxi to the game is viable.

i was wondering the same thing. it really bugs me when people act like boulder is in a different time zone than denver. on gamedays i leave with plenty of time to tailgate or go to the harvest house and it only takes me 35 minutes to get from wash park to the CU campus.

Bottom line is -- if you want to fly to a game, you can. Yes, you might have to make a connecting flight. Boo hooo hoo. And FYI- i have flown direct from OKC to Denver about 100 times. And I am pretty sure Southwest just started a direct OKC - Denver.

Your excuses as to why CU fans don't travel are just that-- excuses. If CU fans wanted to go to games, they would go. They don't. End of story.

i do. thanks.

OK I am convinced I will drive from Boise to Boulder for the Neb game; even got my tickies!! Probably don't need more Buffs for that game but what can I say

:woot: you will have to come to sacky's gater! :gobuffs:

i do. thanks.

Me too. I just don't go to all of the away games. Typically once a year, sometimes twice. Hey, I don't feel at all bad about missing the garden spots of Lawrence, Lubbock and Lincoln.

For me, I'll use football as an excuse to go on a trip, but there better be something to do other than the football game while I'm there.

Tell that to a student who isn't sitting on a ton of frequent flyer miles.
I, for one, find a way to go to lots of games. I can't say if CU fans do or don't travel well. What the hell does that mean anyway? Is there some ranking somewhere? Or is this some self-loathing myth that perpetuates on threads like this one? Besides, until Hertz offers a rental package that includes a grill, icebox, door magnets, window flags and portable TV, the airport football trip doesn't have the same kickass tailgate experience as a bona fide road trip.
