Buff Fan Experience at Tech

"Win or lose, we party. You never lose a party." The lady at the front desk of the Holiday Inn said this. It pretty much sums up the fan experience.

The Lubbock local TV stations run church commercials at nearly every break. "I was so tired of the same old thing at church, I almost quit going, but then I discovered the fresh ministry of Reverend So-and-so.

A typical conversation with the Tech fans included a mention of how the Aggies are the worst. This is what happens when A&M's media guide calls Tech fans classless. The second point is that Tech fans harbor fond memories of Colorado vacations, have sons and daughters who live in Littleton, Longmont, or wherever, and "love it up there".

In the course of this exchange, Raider fans by the dozen were friendly and cordial. Some bought us beers, provided us with sausage wraps, and rolled out the Red (Raider) Carpet. This was the friendliest fan experience yet on an away game.

I hear if you can get the farmers daughter to spit out her wad of Redman wintergreen its a pretty cool date.

The area around Lubbock leaves alot to be desired to say the least but it sounds like their fans are very much all-class.

I'm not surprised at all by this. Good to hear about great fan experiences especially at the oppositions house.

EVEN better that we won!

I guess we were lucky that the weather cooperated. The weather was like Boulder during the Miami of Ohio weekend. Perfectly blue sky with no clouds. Just a slight breeze that took some of the sting out the noon sun. Jones AT&T staduim was completed in 2003. The luxury area looked posh, and one of the media folks indicated it was tops. The stone facade was impressive enough. This is a brand new stadium facilty, and was comfortable, althought the fan section in the North Endzone was isolated from the rest of that fans. It was out of range from the student section, which may explain why I didn't see any flying tortillas or hear any one talking like 96. The staduim could get to be damn hot if you hit the wrong weekend. I don't know why it has such a reputation for being a tough place for the visitors, because it wasn't nearly as loud nor obnoxious as OU, UT or A&M. Sorry UT, A&M, OU and pre-T Boone OSU, but this stadium is much more charming and accessible than any other in the B12 south. It was fun seeing so many pick-up games of football being played all around the place, as there are fields of grass all around the stadium. For the record, TT's home is not as charming as Folsom, and the Raider Vision TV screen isn't in the same class as Nebraska's big screen.

One of the better features of Jones Stadium was the Alumni pavillion, just south west of the stadium. Before the game, there is a live band at the Raider Gate festivities. At the pavillion, you can buy beers and listen to the live show. At half-time, they gave a yellow "pass out", that allowed us to return to the pavillion for more beers, and catch the scores of other games going on around the country on a bunch of large TV screens. The band brought out a lead guitar, who whipped up a version of GNR's Sweet Child of Mine. I like bands who aren't afraid to bust out some power chords.

A good many of the fans in the CU section were friends and family of CU's Texan players. The fan section was just an awsome experience, not due to numbers, but due to people whose connection to CU runs pretty deep. It's more like participating in an CU Athletic Department function than just attending a football game.

The win was awsome. But the best part of the Tech game was the people. This is what the B12 experience should be about. With Frontier starting direct flights in to Lubbock, maybe more Colorodans will come to Lubbock in 2011 and re-patriate some of those Texan tourism dollars that get spent up north. The skiing in October at A-basin couldn't have been better than hanging out at this ballgame.

Tech's campus is large. The locals say it's "Biggest campus in the US, next to the Airforce Academy, but they have runways and stuff like that." After watching CU put up a new building or two with each passing year, the Boulder Campus gets more compact every year. I didn't really notice how tighly packed CU's buildings are on campus until walking around Tech. There is a lot of room to expand in Lubbock. Instead of taking down the old basketball arena, they just built an other one farther out on the property.

techie fans seem innocuous. they also have other axes to grind (specially with the aggy who seem to tick everyone off), so they are their cordial best.

their laid back attitude meshes well with ours. plus, i always look forward to going and seeing pretty campusses. not those vommitted in the middle of a city where people have to tailgate by railroad tracks and concrete bridges.

austin, despite their parking garage gater tactic is a right fun spot, if you can ignore the mulleted toothless and sunburnt hounds they pay to sit next to the visiting section.

i really like the welcome mat at osu. if you like techies more than the pokies, than they have to be damn awesome!

I've always heard that the sand ags fans were a little strange. Kind of like the bizzaro version of regular aggie fans.

Interesting to hear that they seemed to be pretty cool.

I've never heard anything good about the town of Lubbock, so it might be the last place I get to in the B-12.

excellent point. after what skiddie relayed, i dont think they should be called sand aggy. that would be just plain wrong.

Wouldn't a bizzaro aggie fan be normal?

Wouldn't a bizzaro aggie fan be normal?

No. Like the Bizzaro version of Superman has all the same powers but he's not the same guy. The Bizzaro version of an aggie would be just as cultish with their dorky traditions (tortillas, the "loser" sign, that gay bell), but not show the same kind of respect for their opponents.

At least that's how I view it.
