How does it feel...

knowing that y'all gave up more points to Mizzou than Nebraska?

Sorry, just poking a little fun.

Seriously though, I think Mizzou is for real this year.

I never thought I'd say that about a Pinkel-coached team!

Probably as good as giving up 76 points to Kansas. :wink2:

god! No kidding. My only consolation is knowing that it'll all be over soon. Just three more weeks.

I never thought being a Husker fan would feel like being a Cubs fan.

 is that the angle of your moral victory this week?

you are really reaching. :wink2:

it will be very interesting to see what happens this week. If I was a gambling man (ok, I am:smile2:) KSU giving up only 7 1/2 looks like the lock of the year.

No your right, but they can't get much worse! :wow:

Oh believe me, your problems can get a whole lot worse. The fuskers still have a ton of support. Dr. Tom has to tread very carefully here. Unless it is his intention to become the permanent AD, he's going to have a hard time pulling the trigger on Cally. If he does pull the trigger on Cally, then he'll have to have another coach in mind to replace him. Whatever coach that is won't necessarily be the choice of the new AD, which could put you right back where you are now.

Oh yes, things can get much, much worse.

I always thought a new AD would be brought in before the new HC is hired to avoid the above problem you point out Sacky. Then TO could ride off into the sunset with his legacy intact knowing if the next guy blows it and hires another tumor, then TO could shrug his shoulders and say "oh well" in a just found the gun in my drawer sort of way.:smile2:

I think it all hinges on whether TO will be the permanent AD or not. Interim AD's do not, as a rule, make major coaching changes.

TO will be interim AD for a while. He has already stated that he wants to work himself into retirement. He's waiting for someone to come up to him and say, "Thanks for everything. Why don't you go catch some fish now."

Thusly, he'll probably be here for another 3-5 years. Firmly entrenching the new coach into position and getting some stability back into the program.

Plus the next AD is likely to be a TO disiciple. Someone like a Dave Rimington. So I think we're going to get some of that stability back and I do not think TO really needs to be all that careful about firing Callahan.

Secondly, I do not feel that the football program is as bad as it is showing. Sounds a lot like another team I know last year. There is a lot of talent on this team. I think it is just not being developed, not being coached and not being utilized effectively. But the talent is there. I believe that if a new coach came in and switched up a lot of the schematics, we could be a Big 12 north champion again as quickly as next year. Probably just drinking more of that spiked red koolaid again though.

The talent is there, but without the right coaches it just goes to waste. I agree that if anything T.O. has already talked to someone about the coaching job. Also, whomever he has in mind to take the permanent AD position is probably going to be in agreement with who is brought in as the new coach.

So 3-5 years is "a while"

If that's the case, then they simply need to take the "interim" label off of his title right now. Otherwise there's too much uncertainty surrounding the department.

I can agree with that. Right now we need to get some sort of stability going for the remaining recruits and players. We don't need more jumping ship because of instability. Right after the CU game they need to announce Cally's firing and then name the next coach fairly quickly to even remotely save this recruiting class.

Thank you Dusty!!!

I really needed a laugh today and I feel much better now that I've read your post.

You guys up there can't see the forest for the trees. Your problem is not talent, it's not schemes, it is partly some pretty bad coaching but mostly it is the complete erosion of your entire team's confidence. They have lost faith in themselves and in each other and that problem cannot be fixed with some new schemes and some extra wind sprints. You are looking at some dark times ahead of you my friend. The only way out of the mess you guys are in is for the team to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and that will take team unity and confidence both of which you guys do not have right now. If you get the right coach who knows the alchemy of building team chemistry and he has a fee hand to get rid of your bad eggs (and you probably have a few - we did) then I think in 2010 you can seriously start talking about a potential division championship. Next year though, it's going to get worse before it gets better.

the label pretty much was taken off the day he was hired. I won't sit here and act like you should know this stuff because, honestly, I would hope that you don't follow us that closely, but basically he said to Perlman that the only way he was taking the job was if there was no timeline on his retirement.

There it is.

I agree with this quite a bit. But explain to me why a new coach and a new beginning cannot clean the slate and give the players hope and confidence? Confidence can be found if lost.

I see two teams going in opposite directions. One is going up. One is going down. It is inevitable that they both pass the same point in their journey past each other.

so essentially, per your claims, he is waiting for someone to tell him to go fishing and enjoy retirement. yet at the same time, he gave the indication that they cannot say that to him.

 is it any wonder your program is in a mess?

He's saying that he wants to be the AD at Nebraska until he can no longer accomplish the needs of the athletic dept.

I'm just curious but I really wonder why Nebraska fans see TO as the savior at AD. While I respect the man as a coach, I see no evidence that he can be successful at AD. The last coaching change he was involved in did not work out so well.

From an outsiders perspective, I do not see any evidence that he is doing a good job at the moment. The program is still imploding, recruits are bailing or thinking about bailing and TO's comments have only led to more confusion and backtracking (will Cally be there or not?).

You have to admit, at the very least having TO is having a calming effect on the fan base. Their program IS imploding, their recruits ARE bailing, and there's all sorts of confusion and backtracking (not to mention backpeddling) going on, but at the end of the day there are still a million or so Fusker faithful across the country who can say to themselves "it'll be okay, Osbourne's back in charge" and for just a few moments before they go to bed, they can feel good about their program simply because of that (imagine if coach Mac had taken over for tharp in '04). You can't deny, this has an undeniably positive effect.

TO also seems to be keeping the fans from mutinying anymore than they already have against the program, and that's vitally important to not only keeping their recruits in town, but keeping their established players from bolting to other programs. The way those Fuskers were attacking their players before TO showed up... uff, they could have seen 50 transfers skipping town before next season (holy lord that would have been hilarious).

Still, I wouldn't hesitate to say they're totally screwed with or without TO.:smile2:

(imagine if coach Mac had taken over for tharp in '04)

I would have been very unhappy with CU if they had done that in '04 for the same reasons I stated above. Mac was a great coach but unproven as an AD. The Buffs didn't need a savior, they needed a good AD.

It's true that this has calmed the faithful but how long can that last? Especially if the current bumbling continues. Even TO has to show results at some point.
