Barnett interested in SMU job

Whatever job GB gets is likely to be his last given his age. I would like to see him back at a BCS school, but that may not happen. Good luck wherever he lands.

I could see it working for him there. IMHO GB definitely needs to go the route of Mike Price and land a job at some third tier program if he's serious about getting back in the game. No half way respectable program will want to touch him until he's got a current winning streak going. The thing is, I can see him pulling that off with a team like SMU. With his ability to get less talented players to over perform and the parity in college football, he could get on a lucky streak and put together a hot season ala Rutgers, Wake Forrest, Boise Stage, Utah, etc. I can see him pulling that off.

they would be crazy

Why? SMU used to be perenial top 20 team and now they are gone. Nobody. Nada. SMU is also a very rich school with tons of very wealthy alumni who are desperate to get back into the CFB lime light. I can totally see them taking a chance on a media risky coach who also has a reputation of taking programs that are down and turning them around (Northwestern & CU). They use him for 3-5 years, get to respectable, cut him loose, he retires at 65 and they hire the next young hot HC. Seems like a good plan to me.

SMU hired Matt Dougherty to coach their hoops team. sounds like they are willing to spend some money and take a chance with someone who has a name and potential program upside but not altogether undamaged goods.

Sure, they were a perennial top 20 team but they were also playing in the SWC back then. It's much different trying to recruit and reach that level playing in Conference USA.

Not only that, they were buying cars and paying players. Big difference now.

I've actually spoken to a former SMU coach and part of his job was to find out what kind of car the recruit wanted.:wow:

I don't doubt that one bit. I lived in SWC country from 72-84. I heard some wild stories, if only half are true...wow.

I agree with you. SMU is not interested in an up and comer. Also consider that SMU is in the middle of talent Rich Dallas. I think recruiting to there would not be difficult.

Schools like South Florida, Louisville, Rutgers, UCONN, have all come on the scene in football in recent years. A good coach could do some damage. What if he convinced EB to come along as assistant Head Coach??? Work as an assistant for a couple of years and take over as HC.

If location was all that mattered, then BAYLOR should be playing for the national championship every year.

Fact is, SMU is pretty far down the Texas food chain:

1. Texas
2. Oklahoma
3. Texas A&M
3a. Texas Tech
4. Oklahoma State
5. TCU and everybody else.

SMU hasn't been worth a crap since the death penalty days. It is not a competitive job anymore, IMO. Barnett might go there and win 3 or 4 games a year, just like most of the other coaches have done.

You just listed schools that all are in BCS conferences. SMU is Conference USA. It is a dead end job. Recruiting to SMU IS tough. As Slade points out, they are way down the list.

EB?!?! He is already coaching a pretty decent Texas high school running back and should be able to parlay that into an NFL coordinator job. He could then be looking at BCS school head coaching.

SMU hasn't wandered out of the NCAA death penalty wilderness.

One thing for sure, not many coaches have been as up close and personal with the NCAA's teeth as GB. SMU is taking a risk with what some program would consider 'damaged goods'. But on the upside, how many coaches have beaten UT in the B12 championship game are out there?

If you are talking about competing for kids with Texas, aTm, OU, yes, it is tough and those kids will not be attending SMU. However, tell me why SMU can't compete for the same kids as TCU, Baylor, UTEP, and Houston. Hell, if Rice can compete in Conference USA and get to a bowl game, I'm confident Barnett could get SMU to one.

A few years ago several were not...Louisville and South Florida were in Conference USA through 2004. UCONN was Division 1-AA through 99. Read my post - I said recently moved up. Rutgers was an Independent in 1991 (and a door mat). My point is a school that makes a commitment to the program in conjunction to being in a good recruiting area can get leverage to get into a BCS conference.

SMU has a lot more resources than Baylor and is right in Dallas.

Got that right B&G

SMU is also a rich kid school. Private school with lots of funding. And SMU also has something that Baylor never had, a history of football excellence (prior to the death penalty). It's much easier IMHO to bring a program back into the national scene if it has been a national contender in the past than try to take one there for the first time. I'm not saying GB's going to win an NC at SMU just that I think if he made a splash it would be noticed more because of their past tradition.

Those who remember the old SWC well know that TCU-SMU was always a big rivalry, and it was pretty evenly matched for a span of probably 50 yrs. The schools are located in the same area with similiar resources, SMU might have more financial support. There is no reason that SMU can't reach the level of success the TCU has been able to attain.

If there is "no reason" then why haven't they?

Is there any reason why BAYLOR can't reach the same level of success of KU, of OSU, of KSU, of ISU, of Texas Tech? Baylor dominated the last few years of the SWC, including a victory in Folsom Field one year. Why can't Baylor get back over that hump now?

SMU has had some nice coaches. Phil Bennett was very well thought of when he took that job a few years back. Since SMU was allowed to return to NCAA play in 1989, they have had four different head coaches. Their best record that entire time was 6-6, in 2006.

Not that familiar with either SMU or Baylor from a commitment to athletics standpoint but sometimes finding the right fit will turn things around. Like McCartney at CU, things fell into place with Gordon Gee, Eddie Crowder giving a lot of support to the coach and program. I thought that Fran would of done well at A&M but for some reason it has not worked out.

Exactly. To say it isn't possible because they haven't done it makes no sense. Rice is in Conference USA as well. Todd Graham took Rice to their first bowl game in over 40yrs last season. The year prior they were 0-11. How did he do it? It had never been done before...

And this year Rice is 2-7.
