TO is moving quick.

I saw that they just asked permission to speak to Gill today. If it was a done deal that they hired BP, I doubt they would have made that request.

I heard Pellini was a longshot. They received permission to speak to Gill and Dr. Tom is on a private jet to Buffalo tomorrow morning.

I don't want to rag on the guy or anything, but is Turner Gill... uh, smart? I remember seeing him on this espn classic show about the 84 Orange Bowl a while ago, and I also remember coming away with the impression that he'd just made Bernie Kosar look like Henry Kissenger.

If he can coach football I guess it really doesn't matter all that much, I just wasn't terribly impressed with his intellect when I saw him on tv.

and fwiw when money really isn't an issue you can move as fast as you want. for nu's sake they need to move fast so recruiting doesn't completely fall apart for them.

Just love the plane spotting by Nebraska Statepaper.com which links the plane owner to a lease on a luxury box in the UNL Gray Lady.

Look out bin Laden, there might be a husker gumshoe around the corner.

I guess he has done a remarkable job at Buffalo. Gill would make a great story--a past hero of the program, run off by the last guy and went out on his own to make good. Then to come back as one of the few black hc's in the country at one of the more storied programs in an effort to turn it back around.

It's the kind of story that would make you want to pull for the guy, which is why I don't want him going back--I don't want anything dampening my loathing for Nebraska.

don't worry about your loathing for the corn being dampened-
I'm sure whoever gets the job will do or say something stupid that will
piss us all off-

So here's a question: it seems that Osbourne wants to bring the program back to where it was before Callahan in every possible way. That means a lot of things, but it also probably means running full contact drills through every hour of every practice for the entire year.

Are recruits going to respond to that? With all the paranoia about injuries, and the way that athletes are so unbelievably aware nowadays of how the condition of their knee ligaments can mean the difference between 100k and 50mil, are kids really going to want to go there? I mean, if I were a kid like Darrell Scott, in all honesty I'd want to go somewhere that's going to let me get hit as little as possible until I sign that rookie contract in the NFL... then again, I'm a giant candyass, but I'd imagine a lot of recruits think the same way.

I agree on the reasoning about Turner Gill, I do not want him to end up coaching Nebraska for the shear fact that I might actually have some sympathy for the guy.

One of my connections. I have several friends in the coaching biz, it's a pretty small world, from my days working on the staff at Marshall...

I don't buy it. Why would they fly to Baton Rouge and interview him FIRST if he was a long shot?

i read today in one of the papers that nu really needs to hire a proven coach instead of someone with potential. i would agree with this for them, as they do not want someone to continue to drive them program down while they are feeling their way around, and learning how to be a successful head coach of a bcs team. i think if they were smart they would talk to petrino, i think he is already wanting to leave the nfl.

There's no way Osbourne would sign on to run the Louisville offense at Nebraska. You'd sooner see him suspend a player for beating his mother in a cocaine induced fit of rage.

because he was willing to interview, you have to go there and sell NU to him. he's the guy TO has wanted the whole time, he wants Turner to get more experience (pushing him to take the SMU job if Pellini changes his mind and takes the NU job).

if a guy is willing to be interviewed, you interview him, especially if he's #1 on your list.

Or for spelling his name wrong on a costant basis!

I still think we hire him as HC and Gill as Assistant HC/OC. Yes I am wishing but ya never know.

that rumor was on footballscoop. I can't imagine many legit coaching candidates allowing ADs to dictate their staffs, however. If you are going to hold a coach accountable for results he needs to be able to hire his own assistants.

.

it is a case of a coach not necessarily interested in the job, but interested in listening. it happens all the time

Fair enough I will buy that, but I just have this funny feeling that Bo will be offered the job. It's just a hunch and God know's I have been wrong before!

Yep I also thought of that as well. Hire the HC and let HIM hire his OWN staff. At this point everything is speculation until Dr Tom makes that formal announcement on who the next HC will be. I also remember that during the Alamo Bowl Gill ran the Offense while Bo was named interim HC. So who knows? In all reality I want a coach who can motivate kids, keep them on the right path (both in school and in life), bring back the walk on program (grant it, it wont be like the old one with the NCAA limiting the numbers) and understanding Nebraska tradition. There is a lot of **** that's broke right now so it will take a strong willed guy to get the job done!

You're all AllBuffs, hombre. I'll misspell all of the Fusker names that I want!

While I'm at it, Tommy Frasier was overrated, Cristan Peters is a douche, and Laurence Phillipps makes Maurice Clarett look like Ghandi. :smile2:

In Lincoln, those who matter believe that your defense takes on the persona of your offense. Because they have to constantly practice against them. In other words, if you run a tough, nose to the grindstone offense, you'll have a similar defense. If you run a "finesse" offense, that's how your defense will play as well.

If he played for NU and ended up back there coaching for NU I certainly could never pull for him, no matter how good of a story it was.

If Gill is really doing a good job as HC at Buffalo, why would he want to step back and become a coordinator again??

Money isn't everything, but he could prolly net an extra $100k as OC. He is making $180k at Buffalo. I suspect NU could pay $275-300K for an OC if they wanted.

just got an email from one of jim grobe's sons, he's supposed to interview with dr. tom tuesday.

I have heard that as well. Grobe is a great coach and seems like a great guy as well. He has done wonders with Wake Forest, that's for sure!
