Greatest Moments in Sports

love it how they always feel the need to put some soccer moments on their lists just for the sake of it although they have no ****ing clue at all.

The Miracle on Ice is by far the greatest moment in sports history. Nothing even comes close to comparing.

Truly amazing accomplishment. Anyone who thinks otherwise is completely and totally nuts.

I agree. There is no way ANY soccer moment can be considered with the greatest moments in sports.

The Miracle on Ice is by far the greatest moment in AMERICAN sports history. Nothing even comes close to comparing.

fixed it

I would go with Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics over the Miracle on Ice.

I dunno Jens, I think one could argue that it was one of the best sport moments ever. In the Olympics, complete underdogs, nobody expected that team to score, let alone win. I'm not sure what else you want for a great sports moment:huh:

That's without a doubt the first one that comes to my mind. Hard to believe that this wasn't even on live television. :wow:

And don't forget that this same team lost to the Russians something like 10-1 right before the Olympics started.

"One could argue" ... it might be the best moment in American sports history, but then again most people over there only care about 4 sports. I just think it´s funny that journos feel compelled to put some stuff that happened in non-American sports on there although they really do not have a clue about those sports and its history. It´s impossible to compile a complete list so I don´t understand why people try.

The list is really, really, really US centric ... it was compiled by an American, ok, but do you really think that roughly 90% of the best stories in sports history are somehow related to the US? Do you really think that Zidane headbutting Materazzi in the 2006 WC final is a better story than the Miracle of Bern?

I agree that the list is US biased, shocker, it was done by a US company. What did you expect? My point being that the 1980 Miracle on Ice was an all time great, world wide sports moment. It was between to international teams on one of the grandest international sports stage with an unbelievable outcome. And that does not even include the political aspect, cold war, etc.

Nothing else, but then they shouldn´t call it the best moments in sports history when they quite obviously don´t have a clue about sports that are popular outside of the US. Call it the best moments in US sports history and I don´t have a problem with it.

That I can agree with.

Why do you get all defensive when I put in some international perspective?

I did not get defensive my man, I simply disagreed with your assertion that is was simply a great American sports moment. To me, it was much, much bigger than just a great American sports moment and that's why I laid out the parameters of why I thought is was an all time great sports moment.

I might be nit-picking here, and I probably am, but our good friend Dusty called it

and that I disagree with. Greatest moment in American sports history, maybe ... I don´t know ... that´s up for others to decide. Greatest moment in SPORTS HISTORY that nothing else even comes close to comparing? I doubt that as no one, and especially not our good old frend Dusty from Nebraska, is capable of objectively judging that. It would probably be in the discussion, sure, but Dusty made a pretty bold statement and I called him out for that.

So educate us with some of the greatest sporting events in Europe -- have at it soccer boy...:wink2:

He's a husker, of course he made an outlandish claim. It's what they do. All I'm saying is it's one of the greatest moments in sports. It's all subjective, kind of like the greatest QB or RB debate. There are a handful of events, players, etc that can be considered all time greats and it's up to sports talk radio and mbbs to argue about the "real" #1.

I might just be trolling here but give us your top 3.

I am not qualified to add to this as I am knowledgeable only in football and I don't pretend to know whats gone on in sports outside of America as well as outside of my lifetime.

I don´t pretend to be all knowing and quite frankly think all those lists are bull****. Neither am I an employee of ESPN.com who´s struggling to find something to come up before Christmas nor do I think I am capable of compiling a list that one could call complete, so I won´t even try.

How´s this for a diplomatic statement? :smile2:

Superb! We just had a discussion where in the end we both found something to agree on. Great stuff.

Top 3? I don't know. Nadia Comaniche 1st perfect 10? Frazier vs. Ali 1? Jim Thorpe wins 8 gold medals? I'm sure their are many other in Soccer and Cricket and other sports I don't follow that are worthy of all time moment. I'd feel pretty comfortable putting the Miracle on Ice with any of them.

Can't say that I disagree with you. I can't think of another instance where such a huge underdog beat such a seemingly unbeatable opponent on the largest stage in sports.

If international sports is the question wouldn't would have to put Rulon Gardner's wresting victory over the undefeated Russian guy a few years back up there as well? That one has to go down as one of the biggest upsets in history.

Possibly. The reason, in my mind, that the Miracle on Ice stands out so much is because of all the story lines, getting clobbered before the Olympics, the cold war, the perceived good vs. evil among others.

THAT is a GREAT story

THAT is a GREAT story

I thought so too. Russian guy is undefeated FOR LIFE. Never even had a point scored on him and gets beaten in the world championship match. Not as many story lines as the miracle on ice, but still an incredible sports moment.

The problem with wrestling is that there's like 10 different classifications and then you have different styles like Greco-Roman to try to figure out. So the same year that Rulon Gardner won the Olympic Gold, something like 20 other wrestlers did, too.

Not so in Hockey. One team wins it all.

For my money, Miracle on Ice is the all time greatest moment in sports history. (forget the fact that the game wasn't even a medal game)
