The Rose Bowl

How the hell did Illinois get into the Rose Bowl?

I'm so sick of usc. Man, I wish they'd get big time probation or something. Of course, the ncaa is their biatch, so that'll never happen. I'm surprised the ncaa hasn't rewarded them with extra scholarships for being so cool. :puke:

I like USC, this game is a complete mis-match... The Illini have no business playing in January. I continue to hope that the Big 11 gets routed and the media will realize that they suck. Except for aTm, who shattered my dreams of the Big11 going winless in the bowl season. And then Florida... s***

Hope Hawaii and Georgia is a better game

Wouldn't necessarily count on that happening.

Illinois definitely didn't deserve to be on the same field as USC as far as a BCS game is concerned. And that McKnight kid is damm good. :wow:

How good would this Rey Maualuga kid look in orange and blue next year?

 I had exactly the same thought. It's been a while since the Broncos had a presence in their defense that other teams were afraid of. Maybe Lynch before he lost too much speed. But an active, instinctive linebacker with a gift for blowing people up? That would be beautiful!

i think the bcs matchups sucked yesterday, and it was suggested to me that it was the rose bowl's fault.

ubt said that okie petitioned to not return to the fiesta bowl - they wanted to switch to the orange (and are allowed to petition as they were at the fiesta last year) so as to create a #3 and #4 matchup. the rose blocked the move - they knew their matchup was irrelevant, and did not want another bowl taking away from their thing they have going on.

if true, i am starting to get irked with the rose bowl on the grounds that they always effenheimer things up for everybody else. example: remember when they were responsible for forcing fsu and miami to play in the orange bowl for the 3rd time in a year? there was fallout with all the other bcs bowls that year as well.

i wish the rose bowl would choke on farty maggots.

it was the rose bowl´s fault for another reason also ...

the rose bowl lost the #1 ranked team (ohio state) to the national championship game and therefore had the #1 pick from the at-large teams. they chose illinois because of their love affair with the big ten and got the game they deserved. the sugar bowl had the second pick (because they lost #2 lsu) and they picked georgia. after that i think the fiesta bowl chose west virginia, the orange bowl ku and the sugar bowl hawaii.

my post from the Sugar Bowl thread

BCS buddy, the same reason they sent Kansas and VT to Orange Bowl, and WVU and OU to the Fiesta. My thoughts in a week you have #1 vs #2, why not in the Orange #3 vs #4 (VT/OU) and the Rose #5 vs #7 (Ga/USC) and them put #8 vs #9 in the Fiesta (Kansas/WVU).

what this will do with last nights Sugar Bowl, unless OU pummels WVU by 3 TDs or more, the voter will move GA to #3, maybe #2 depending on the outcome of the Orange Bowl Thursday night.

and in turn, people like me, who are have been strong opponents of a CFB playoff, will start to waiver about a playoff... wait I have already started to waiver, but am still against it.

also the Big XII screwed it up two with 3 teams ranked of the top 9 teams and the BCS rule that no more than 2 teams from a conference can play in a BCS bowl. Mizzou got hosed as I would have liked to see them in one the BCS Bowls along with KU and OU. All 3 teams are deserving of a BCS bowl. You then could have put Mizzou vs #10, 11 or 12 (I think that was Hawaii) in the Sugar Bowl. cant remember who was ranked 10, 11 and 12 in the last BCS poll Dec 2nd.

Mandel at SI did a short article about the matchups for the BCS games. The reason the non-championship game matchups are not good is because the BCS is scared that it might hurt the legitimacy of the championship game. This makes perfect sense since they have such a shakey system anyways. Make sure you have a clear number 1 cause you don't let anyone else play a game big enough to overcome them.

they did not think that one through, then.

ohio state backed into the nc game. there is enough controversy surrounding that as to make a clear #1 murky at best.

A lot of articles today are saying USC should be tops since they beat the only team to beat the team in the championship.

My Buckeye bro-in-law's response to that was, "Well then give us a shot at Stanford".

Gawd I hate Ohio State & their fans.

Final BCS standings...

1. OSU 11 - 1
2. LSU 11 - 2
3. VT 11 - 2
4. OU 11 -2

If VT played OU, the winner of that game really has a legitimate basis to claim that they should be the champs regardless of who wins the other game. Especially if LSU wins since both teams would have 12-2 records but most fans consider OU & VT superior to OSU. So, what does the BCS committee do? Make sure that OU & VT do not play each other. VT over KU or OU over WVU isn't as impressive.

I agree with you that the legitimacy of the championship game is cloudy at best. So they want to make sure that no other games make it worse. It sucks that the interest of putting the best games on the field takes a back seat to making sure their broken system doesn't look more screwed up than it is.

Tell us how you really feel.

Pisses me off because the Rose wants to preserve their precious tradition. Well, our champion used to play in the Orange Bowl. I don't see too many people whining about that change.

Just like we backed into a couple big 12 north championships; they/we benefited from other teams losing and I cant fault them for that. The Big10 is quite clever in that they dont have a championship game AND they end their season earlier so they can just sit there.

going by that logic, should missouri be handed a split of the national title with oklahoma per default as missouri is the only team in the country that beat teams who beat lsu AND ohio state (illinois and arkansas)? can we maybe give the buffs a share of the national title then also as they beat the sooners, who beat missouri twice?

My Buckeye bro-in-law's response to that was, "Well then give us a shot at Stanford".

i guess usc and the buckeyes can settle that when the bucks travel west to face the trojans in the coliseum in september.

why mizzou?? The Sooners beat them bad in Norman in October and even worse in the Big XII championship game at a neautral site yhe 1st weekend in December....

Teams that qualify for the BSC should automatically be slotted into the bowls - no petitions - bowl comm. - etc. It should be predetermined each year the slots - Orange 1 and 2 - Rose 3 and 4 etc....... BCS is computerized so should the alignment - The only problem would be teams from the same conference - they would not be able to play each other in a bowl. :wow:
