Two Buffaloes?

I just watched "Buffalo Stampede" on the Altitude Network (Altitude's on DirecTV), and they profiled Ralphie and the mascot history back to 1934 (apparently the buffalo used to sit behind the end zone all game long in the 60's ??? )

Anyway, next year there will be a new young Ralphi V (named "Rowdy" I think) ... and apparently BOTH Ralphies will be at games next year. Sounds interesting ... but how's that gonna work?

Getting some conflicting stories about Ralphie V. Before the fusker game, I spoke with a couple of the handlers and asked if this was the last game for Ralphie IV and that if Ralphie V was ready yet. They said "no way is Ralphie V ready yet." Subsequently, I've heard that they will be breaking in Ralphie V next year while still running Ralphie IV for the first couple games. Apparently, Ralphie V is quite rambunctious and it's taking longer to train her than they expected. My guess is that they'll ease her into the surroundings of a 55,000 seat stadium before asking her to perform.

I saw a practice run of V on the news a month or two ago. She is fast as hell and rowdy. I love it. Shades of Ralphie III. IV is just too laid back and doesn't really want to run. It looks like V is practicing to be a sprinter. By the time they made it over to the trailer all the handlers are on the end of their teathers just trying to hold on.

Whenever discussion drifts to Ralphies, I have two stories I like to tell.

Ralphie I - I was just a lad at the time, but I remember Ralphie I being very, very rambunctious. I don't think they had perfected their training just yet, because I remember her shedding her handlers on more than one occassion. One time, she shed ALL of her handlers and ran right out of the stadium! I seem to recall that they caught up with her down at the Crossroads parking lot.

Ralphie II - in a game against LSU, a bunch of LSU fans actually went on the field before the game and went over to where Ralphie was penned up. They started waving pompoms in her face. The handlers and officials were all like "Get the hell out of here you morons, she's not a tame animal!" They were lucky they didn't get the horns that day. What a bunch of retards.

you didn't look THAT old when i met you before the KU game.....:wow:

oil of olay? :wink2:

rowdy is ralphie iv. ralphie v has been named blackout.

they had ralphie iv set up at the indy bowl, and i asked exactly what was going on with the iv/v thing. they said that next year is all about blackout. that she is real fast, but they have gotten "used to it".

she is a spunky thing. let's hope she never is able to run all the way to crossroads.

I was there as well and asked how the new buff was doing. The said she is smaller than IV but quick. They told me that the Indy Bowl was her last game and next year would we would see the V.

They also told me that they tried to have IV and V share a pen but that IV didnt like V so they have had to split them up. Maybe she just isnt ready to retire yet.

Blackout.. I love it. Which one was named Tequila?

I have a related question. Which one was at the 03 NU game that was refusing to run and attempting to throw her handlers about 10 steps out of the gate? That sh*t was hilarious! :smile2:

Classic Ralphie photo ... in fact, one of the greatest photos of any kind ever taken for that matter:

Look at the ref! ... "Does my job description include stopping this beast?!" :smile2:

That was Ralphie IV, and it turns out that she was pregnant at the time but nobody knew it. You ever deal with a pregnant woman with hormones?

 should have given him pom poms.

Great picture. I wonder if Tom changed his underwear before the game or if he waited until halftime. I think the next Ralphie should be a full grown 2000 pound+ male. The handlers could be redshirt offensice linemen or something.

Seeing as how that was the 1995 huskers behind him I think his underwear was just fine...especially after the first play from scrimmage went for a TD.

Ralphie III was Tequila.

Ralphie IV was in heat in '03 and that's why she didn't run. same thing happened in 2000 (the year Aldrich missed the game winner). Talk about a large animal in a bad mood.

She has never been around other buffaloes so her getting pregnant would be difficult.

That is GREAT

I always get stoked when Ralphie runs

OK, maybe I heard the story wrong.

Probably. And you would give yours to have your half of a championship back as well wouldn't ya?:smile2:

using that logic, you guys have 4, not 5 since you split with UT in the 70 and UM in 97.

you SHOULD have split with PSU in 94....they got screwed.

I think you meant to say Ralphie III.

Nope. The fuskers beat CU, who was the best team in the country that year. They deserved the MNC. It wasn't the fuskers fault that coach Mac had a collossal brain fart.

I completely agree. The bowl systems back then were a joke. Not like they are today :smile2: I would've given my nuts to see us play PSU in 94 or Umich in 97. Completely biased, but I think we would've won a close one over PSU, and would've throttled Mythigan. Personally I think that both the buffs and Miami would've beaten PSU in 94 as well. Great offense, but absolutely no D and they played the weakest Oregon team ever in the Rose Bowl.

a couple glaring problems with that:

1. i do not need anything "back". the championship was won long ago, and there is nothing you can do about that.
2. i do not have any nuts to give.

that being said, i think colorado is well ahead of nu in the search for the next national championship. life is good.

Debatable.

I'm completely biased, but anyone can see that Colorado is on the rise and Nebraska is heading in the wrong direction.
