Does Dizon get his number honored?

Buffarino

Math - how does it work?

I would think so. He was the B12 Defensive PTOY and a consensus (I think) All-American. Does he go up next to Crosby?

And more importantly, does Shanny draft him?

I don't know what the criteria is for getting a number honored, but I would think Dizon would pass with flying colors.

I would be a bit disappointed if he wasn't honored.

I think his number goes up with Williams, Kelly, etc because he was an All-American. We might need to get a bigger area for the names - it's filling up :smile2:

I love Dizon, but if I were an NFL coach, I would not draft him too high. He's a great football player with his guts and heady play, but his athleticism isn't too extraordinary. I might get lynched for saying that, but whatever, I hold to my statement. He's a great player, and will always be a great Buff. The NFL though requires more than just guts and heady play. I hope to be proved wrong by Dizon and wish him all the best in the pros - I think he'll have a career, but just not as great of one as in college...

Broncos in my opinion should not draft him. I do not like all this talk about redoing the entire LB squad. I like the guys we have - they just need better coaching, and DJ did improve as the year progressed. They need another OL, some safety help, a return guy, a FB, perhaps a DT.

The one CU guy that I think NFL scouts should love is T Wheat. He's fast, good coverage, good hands, and tackles extremely well. Unfortunately, unless Bly is traded, Broncos do not need CB help.

To not draft T-Wheat because of Bly would be incredibly short sighted. A couple of years from now either Baily or Bly (or both) isn't going to be here anymore, and we're going to need someone to slide into their former spot(s).

As far as Dizon's concerned, I agree that he's going to have a tough time playing MLB in the pros. He could make an absurdly good special teamer, or perhaps even a strong safety in run stopping situations. For the Broncos, Laurenitis or Connor would be a much better fit (and that's really the only repair that the Broncs need at linebacker IMO, just a true middle linebacker, our OLBs are fine).

Dizon would be a nice player to take in the 5th round or so. The Broncos just need players. He would be an impact player on special teams, the worst unit on the Broncos right now.

People get way too caught up in drafting for specific positions. Outside of QB, every position is open for drafting. Get the best player available because there are so many needs, they're not going to be able to address them all.

Isn't the criteria for his number to be honored either a post-season award, three-time 1st team Big-12, and/or 2 time 1st team all-american??

I'm pretty sure you just have to be an all-american. It might be consensus, which Dizon is. Ben Kelly is up there, so it's not 3-time all big 12 or 2 time 1st team all-american. A lot of the guys with there numbers up on the press box do not have post-season awards, so I'm pretty sure it's just All-American (perhaps consensus).

Interesting note from ESPiN's coverage of today's Senior Bowl practice...

Jordon Dizon (Colorado) doesn't look the part of an NFL linebacker, but somehow, he winds up around the ball on nearly every play. His feet are outstanding, and he covers a lot of real estate in zone. He has an uncanny knack for avoiding blockers without taking himself out of the play. His lack of size and power will prevent him from playing in the middle at the next level, but he has a chance to make an impact on the weak side in a smaller-type scheme such as those run by the Colts and Broncos.

This one was pretty nice too...

• Colorado CB Terrence Wheatley also has been impressive throughout the week. He displays very smooth feet, showing good ability to mirror and stay with receivers. With good ability to turn and run combined with adequate top-end speed, he rarely trails receivers and often runs step-for-step with them down the sideline. He also has shown sound ability to break out his backpedal; he broke up a curl route during seven-on-seven drills.

:gobuffs:

Thanks for that Junc. I normally cringe at taking local players because I think the fit just isn't right most of the time, but I would love to see Dizon in orange and blue next year.

I haven't even looked at NFL draft projections yet, but do you really think Dizon will last until the 5th round?

Yeah, unfortunately for JD I think that's a real posibility. I'm betting the nfl teams are a bit leary of his size.

I read one draft rating (Scout) that had him as the #9 OLB. Same site had Wheatley as #8 CB, and Polumbus as the #20 tackle. It would be nice to see all of 'em drafted, including Hugh.

Maybe late 4th round. I think he's going to fall because he doesn't quite have the measurables that scouts look for. This is a very deep draft. The potential to find late round steals like Dizon should be there.

I would love to see Dizon in Predominantly-Orange & Blue next year.

I think it's pretty well assured that Jordan will get his name up on the press box. I seem to recall that the criteria was to be on 2 out of 3 all-american teams. I think he was a concensus AA this year.

The criteria for having your number honored is being a consensus AA.

Consensus AA is being chosen by 3 or more publications.....JD's number will be up there.

Honoring a number is different from retiring a number.

The only numbers retired by CU are:
24 - Byron "Whizzer" White RB & Supreme Court Justice
67 - Joe Romig T/LB 2-time All-American & Rhodes Scholar
11 - Bobbie Andserson QB/TB

I'm all for honoring Jordan Dizon for his play and the honor he has brought to the team. It would be great for any future #44 to honor that legacy.

Just being a geek here, but some other CU #44s include:
Roland CARANCI: 1940-42 T
Tom CORSON: 1965-67 HB
Nick COUNTER: 1959 HB
Chad GARDNER: 2000-2003 OLB/FB
Mark HAYNES: 1976-79 CB
Roger HUNT: 1951-53 QB
Jeff KENSIGNER: 1973 CB
Sam MAPHIS: 1954-55 QB
Clifton PETERS: 1995-97 ILB
Alvin PHILLIPS: 1976 LB
Clyde RIGGINS: 1981-83 CB
Dennis SCHNORR: 1968-70 TE
FW Taylor: 1943 T
Anthony WEATHERSPOON: 1984-86 FB
Beau WILLIAMS: 2001-02 TE
John ZISCH: 1946-48 E
