Linebackers in 08????

Who will start at our linebacker spots. Will Jeff Smart return to the starting lineup?? Where will Sipili play?? Will the new freshmen play right away??

Replace Smart with John Major and replace "smattering" with "a healthy dose of" and I think you're pretty close.

I think Smart played great last year, and as a fellow Panther I was glad to see it. I don't think he'll be on the field much next year except on special teams.
 
I have a feeling that Brad Jones will be used mostly as another pash rusher, he isnt the greatest coverage guy but he did a great job coming up the middle putting presure on the QB
 
Depends on what they do with jones but as of right now no mention of him moving to DE.

LB-KATOA- MOHLER/SMART
LB-SIPILI-BURTON
LB-JONES- MAJOR
 
LB - Burton, Jones, Hartigan, Stengel
MLB - Sipili, Major*, Smart, Ahles
LB - Mohler, Katoa, Beatty, Duren, Rippy*

* - I think these 2 will redshirt; depends on how they do this summer.
 
One of the areas that we should see the benefits of newfound depth at LB is special teams.

I expect Mohler to come in and compete for a starting job.
 
I think Smart's playing time may be limited... He will have to step up and compete for the spot just like every other LB will with all this competition. It can only make each player better. Depth does that because it pushes players to work their @$$es off!
 
Smart impressed the **** out of me. I know he isn't nearly as tallented as the others but he was the most heady player on the field most of the time last year. I expect to see a lot of him, expecially if he spends significant time in the weightroom this off season.
 
I'd be willing to bet that Major ends up with significant playing time. He eats other athletes for a living, it is his chosen business. Business is good.
 
With the depth we have at linebacker, I really don't expect any of the new guys to redshirt. We're right at where we want to be, depth wise, after a miserable year last year.
 
I think they might start the year hoping to redshirt a fw of them...Rippy and maybe Major and then burn their redshirt if the injury bug hits.

Yep. I think we can afford to redshirt two of the four guys in this class. We need to space some guys out here.

If you play Mohler and Kotoa this year while redshirting Rippy and Major, we still go 5 or 6 deep at LB, depending on what the coaches do with Jones.
