KAi Maiava transfers to UCLA? I can't believe it...

We should all remember that on the eve of signing day last year, Maiava was headed to either New Mexico State or Idaho State. Then CU offered him outta the blue after Garth Gerhardt switched at the last minute.

I figure he's a snake ... because we gave him a D1 shot there when he was headed for obscurity. He had some success, and decided to transfer to the school he really wanted all along, UCLA.

I don't get the move to FB, though ... he says he was against it. ???

I'm obtuse, I missed where it said he was going to fUCLA
It's all over Net****s

I don't quite get this, but it was posted elsewhere:

Within a week of transferring, Kai Maiava had 8 D1 offers from solid
football programs. 3 Pac 10, 1 Big 10, 2 WAC and 2 Mountain West
teams. ALL of them wanted him as an offensive center and NONE of them
could figure out why he was moved to FB at CU.

Thanks to the efforts of Norm Chow, Maiava has decided to play for the
UCLA Bruins. Chow was very instrumental in recruiting Kai's LB
brother, Kaluka, to USC four years ago.

This was reported in a local hawaii newspaper. Kai was ranked the
31st center in the country coming out of high school and will now
compete against the #1 ranked center that same year that committed to
UCLA. Maiava said he welcomed the new challenges.

On a local tv interview, he did say that he missed his former CU
teammates and friends and wished things could have worked out where he
could have continued to contribute to the program. He also stated that
he is very happy to be closer to his family and to play against his
brother at USC.

Neither of those articles say anything about Tricky Ricky or the University of unCommonly Loud Asians.

So there is no factual basis that he is going to UCLA, just that he's a snake for picking us at the last minute in '07 and that is where he'd fit?

some BS in that post me thinks. That would be cool if it works out for him at UCLA, but thats a hard school to get in to and he was have acedemic issues at CU.

Although as bad as slick rick is at recruiting O-line he may get plenty of PT.

Yeah guys, the UCLA thing is not confirmed I guess, but it's all obver MBs elsewhere. And absinthe, you're right - that's prolly a fake news story.

There must've been something wrong here ... Maiava is a starter and frosh-All-American at G. Hawk moves him to FB and he loses 25 pounds. Now he says he didn't want to move to FB. I cannot believe Hawkins would've forced him - he's not tone-deaf after all.

Hawk probably told him if he ever wanted to play at the next level he needed to move, I cant imagine he would have disagreed if the coaches put it that way.

Then after moving he found he didnt like the new position, that combined with being homesick probably effected his school work as well.

If he goes to ucla, at least he'll get plenty of opportunities to work on his pass blocking. Good luck Kai.

Slick Rick recruited Victor Rogers, Tom Ashworth, Brad Bedell, Justin Bates, and Andre Gurode. Those are pretty good o-linemen.

My theory, based on nothing but my imagination, is that Hawk saw the writing on the wall and knew the Kai probably wouldn't last at CU (for whatever reason). I simply don't believe that Hawk and Grimes would have moved him if doing so was the difference between him staying and going.

In the end, we will never know. Had Hawkins kept him on the OL would he have stayed? Nobody can answer that.

I was happy for the year that he was here. He was a fun player to watch and I wish him the best of luck. College and football are supposed to be something you enjoy.

didn't he have grade issues? UCLA might not be the right place for him...he could be Nueweisels run for probation at UCLA

Calling Kai a snake? Wow.
Yup, and I stand by it ... I'm not one of those "good luck Kai" people. We gave him a chance at D1 in the 11th hour, in the last 72 hours before signing day. And he signed an LOI. Now, one year later, he rides the success that we gave him the opportunity for and transfers to a school that wouldn't give him the time of day last year. To me, that is the definition of a "snake."

Sorry... I love Hawk and company, but they **** the bed with this one. Freshmen All-American, and you move him? Now I always say, they know more than we do... but now he is gone, he's gotten better offers as a result from prestigious schools.

Going for it on 4th down, and now this Kai ordeal was a bad call on Hawkin's part...

The Neuheisel part really hurts ... but so does the Dennis Ericksen part. He "stole" away Garth Gerhardt (#6 HS C in the nation) from us last year in the final 3 or 4 days of recruiting, and now ASU graduated C Mike Pollok (2nd round pick to the Colts), and Gerhardt is set to start for them for the next 4 years.

I was VERY stoked that Maiava turned out to be every bit the player that Gerhardt is.

Maybe I get too dramatic about this stuff, but if you watch recruiting closely, ASU is one of our biggest recruiting rival schools. We recruit far more in competition with the Pac-10 than with the Big XII. The two Arizona schools, and the four Oregon and Washington schools are all constantly listed by our potential recruits, though you rarely see Kansas or Missouri or even Nebraska as recruiting rival schools. I look at recruiting as a second level of head-to-head competition, and we just lost a big game here... this is a very sad day.

Come on! Let's give Hawkins (and Grimes) a little more credit than that. Do you really believe that if all they had to do to keep Kai at CU was allow him to go back to OL they wouldn't have done it?

Plus this is a big Polynesian-Hawaiian loss just when NU is getting active there :pissed:

I really wouldn't lose too much sleep over that. *ebraska has a big hill to climb in Hawaii. We still have a ton of polynesians on the team and we have a solid history of Polynesian players here. *ebraska - not so much. Plus we have Brian Cabral. The weather is much better here and we annually schedule a Pac-10 school. UH is on the schedule as well. *ebraska doesn't have any of that. On top of it all, Hawk's approach is far more attractive to the Polynesians than Mr. Personality Bo Pelini.

Who is our Pac-10 opponent this year? Just sayin':smile2:

Nice job hawk and helfrich, we lose him to the slickster. I know, put darell scott at safety. STUPID MOVE and you deserve grief from the fans.

Now,in the same context,I agree with bronco buff, cu gave him a great chance and he goes to a school who didn't give him the time of day.

I think you are a little narrow in your analysis. You seem to have overlooked the part where he was given a position change where he would probably hardly ever see the field. If you were demoted on your job you are saying you would not look at other opportunities.

I believe it is harsh and unfair for CU fans to start trashing Maiava because he chose to transfer. A lot of things happened - but he came in here in 2007 and did what was asked of him and turned out to be the surprise of the 2007 recruiting class. Yes CU gave him an opportunity but CU was also changing his opportunity. The "snake" comment is out of line.

Here's something new. If this is true, it started last season before the switch to FB.

This from a UCLA Board:

"Offensive lineman Kai Maiava is transferring from Colorado to UCLA, scout.com reported today. I just talked to Maiava, and he confirmed he'll become a Bruin. Maiava must sit out one year due to transfer rules.

"`It was a whole bunch of things that added up,'' Maiava said. ``It was a little football, a little this, a little that. It started to crumble on me. It was weird towards the end of the year. I found it better to be closer to home and surrounding myself with family.''

Come on! Let's give Hawkins (and Grimes) a little more credit than that. Do you really believe that if all they had to do to keep Kai at CU was allow him to go back to OL they wouldn't have done it?

Not what I'm saying. What I am saying is that if someone is a Frosh All-American, it means he is doing something right at OL.

We tend to work with the assumption that Kai's family is all in Hawaii. Does he have some family in socal? A while ago some poster, who at least sounded credible, suggested that the family issue thing was quite real. I don't have any info, so I'm at the mercy of people who sound credible. I'm just wondering if the troubled element is in California, vice HI.

Why,because Hawk never makes a bad decision or move? He does and has just like many coaches. Hawk isn't above it her and at 8-17,his record on the field better start equalizing his zen quotes off it.
