Opposing Teams Fight Songs

I was talking to a buddy who is a wisconsin fan and he mentioned how it was a tradition for their marching band to play the opposing teams fight song before each game. Apparently a lot of big10 teams do this as a sign of respect. He loves it and I thought it was a cool idea... What does everyone think?? I would like to hear them.. maybe except for the fuskers, :wink2:

Boomer Sooner is only 15 notes. Fifteen mind-numbing, barf inducing notes.

Strike that one from the play list. If I never heard that one again, it would be too soon.

As a member of the band (and I'm sure my 200 fellow marchers would agree), I will play boomer sooner over my dead body. As someone who has had to listen to it at least 100 times total in my college career so far, I concur 100% with skid. For further reference see the Facebook group "Boomer Sooner makes my ears bleed".

"It's the only, It's the only, It's the only... song we know!"

naw, they arent supposed to feel like at home ... a little hostility to create a homefield advantage never hurts

They do a lot of goofy stuff at Big 11 games that we don't do here... I remember going to a game at the Big House in 2002 between Michigan and Penn State, they had this halftime band showdown where the drum majors from each school tried to outdo each other by performing somewhat corny tricks (one guy did a back flip, which was pretty impressive considering that he was wearing one of those giant band hats, I don't remember what the other guy did).

Anyway, it was all like a big vaudeville act really, but I enjoyed it. There was a definite and very charming vintage appeal to the whole thing... kind of like listening to Paul Harvey.

I agree with you guys about boomer sooner, but goldenbuff wouldn't everyone in the band enjoy playing something new once a week? my buddy mentioned how playing the fight song gets the students pumped up as they start booing like crazy.. And think about if this spread around the big 12, I would love to hear our fight song being played by the opposing team on a roadtrip if our band couldnt make the trip.

Several teams travel a band so I wouldn't think it is necessary to play the opposing fight song. If you want to show some sign of respect, how about their alma mater? Those are usually boring enough that they won't provide any psychological effect.

As for Boomer Sooner, you may not like it... it may be simple... but it is one of those fight songs that IS college football. As much as I love CU, the fight song doesn't resonate as one of college football's best.

I'll reluctantly agree with the second part of your statement... CU's fight song is really generic. But most fight songs are that way, there's only a few (Michigan's, Notre Dame's, and Mississippi's come to mind) that stand out from the pack at all.

I must admit that UT's and OU's football fight songs are classic, well-know fight songs around college football.

Calling Ruffbuff. Apparently the CU fight song is the Stoudt of college fight songs. Can you update that?:smile2:

How do you reconcile this with your initial quote which said something about a "sign of respect"?

It's time to introduce the electic guitar into the marching band and get some of that Trans Siberian Railroad sound into the stadium.

Its only the students that boo, its not like its the entire stadium. the away team appreciates hearing their fight song and views it as a classy move.

As a former member of the CU Marching Band ('95-'98), we used to do this, but it was not something anyone in the band liked to do. We pretty much revolted and got the directors to stop doing it. Plus, we never put any substantial work into the pre-game show...we perfected it in pre-season and hit it once a week just to stay sharp. That didn't leave a whole lot of time to work up new material...much less something we didn't want to play.

I can't remember which ones we tried to play now (memory fading), but I remember CSU's. It was awful. It sounds like a combination of CU's and Notre Dumb. Sometimes, I think some folks would purposefully shank the piece to make it sound even worse.

It's ****ing stupid. Not surprising considering the idea came from a marching band.

I've heard this used to be a fairly common practice across the nation, but it doesn't surprise me at all that this trend died. We band freaks are fans as well, and learning another school's fight song would fall somewhere just above "shove a spoon up my ass sideways" on my list of things I'd rather do.

Link doesn't work for me but if I recall, our Glory has a different countermelody than Georgia's Glory.

I only found this out when i was at the College world series this year and they were playing that song over the PA system when the scored. I was like... WHA? i didnt no CU had a baseball team. It was just shocking to hear the song so close to the CU song.
