why did they use baby blue in the late eighties? what triggered this? i think the helmets look cool, but still seems weird.

early 80's and you can thank chuck fairbanks ( I always heard his daughter liked the ucla colors)

:yeahthat:

The unis looked like UCLA ripoffs. It was horrible. If I ever see upChuck Fairbanks in a public place, the cops will have to peel me off of him. :gun:

In the early eighties the state legislature told CU to change the background color on our uniforms to Columbine Blue, as our state flower is the columbine. When we went back to black jerseys in 86, you could still see a columbine stripe on the sleeves that is sort of weird. We didn't fully expunge the blue until 88 or 89, I think. I can't remember when they repainted the "COLORADO" endzone ramp in folsom black instead of blue.

Chuck Fairbanks is indeed a douchebag, but this is one thing he cannot (to my knowledge) be blamed for. Spending 40,000 dollars decorating his office while we were eliminating 8 sports is his fault though.

I'd like a link on this. I've never heard this story before. I'll continue to blame upChuck for the powder blue uniforms. I have a hard time believing the state legislature is in a position to dictate to a university what it's colors need to be.

Cuz those two colors don't go very well together on a uniform.

the official site says that black looks more striking with the gold. i like it, so i am not going to rock the boat.

It was not the legislature. It was the board of regents.

"From 1981 through 1984, CU wore two different shades of blue after a Board of Regents mandate formed a campus committee to explore adding or changing colors that represented the athletic teams."

"May 28, 1981—Blue officially adopted as the primary uniform color in place of black after a Board of Regents mandate at its January meeting and subsequent follow-up recommendation by a campus committee. Originally suggested to be “the deep blue Colorado of Colorado’s sky at 9,000 feet” by then-Regent Jack Anderson, jerseys were officially an “Air Force Blue” though different than the blue the Air Force Academy’s sports teams wore. Numerals are silver and outlined in white, and the pant remained gold, but with a blue stripe, for both home and road. Football helmets remained gold but with blue logos. CU’s trademark south end zone is painted blue, the first color change since it was created after the track was removed in 1966. CU’s coach at the time, Chuck Fairbanks, has been routinely, and falsely, credited for the color switch through the years, which was not overly popular with Buff fans."

1982 Uniforms

The blue was expunged after the 1984 season.

"April 24, 1985—“Black is Back” read the release announcing that athletic director Bill Marolt would allow head coaches of all CU sports teams (then 14 in number) the option of returning to black as the primary jersey color. The pant moves toward a metallic gold with no stripes (though in 1991, the road black pant had a gold stripe). McCartney’s throwback efforts the previous season were the impetus for the change; the football jersey had a blue stripe on the arm for the 1985, 1986 and 1987 seasons before it was dropped altogether in 1988. The Big 8 logo graced one sleeve. The south area behind the end zone with COLORADO is once again painted black (for ’85)."

they clearly did not consider the thoughts of their supporters. who has a powder blue jersey that they wear on gameday?

Don't get me wrong. I love the all black uniforms and the balck jersey's with gold pants. I was just curious why they don't mix in some silver like they used to around the numbers.

according to the official website, they do:

said:
June 2, 2007—Silver is reintroduced into the color scheme, as both the jersey and pant are overhauled. The black home jersey has silver numbers and gold trim in a new design never before incorporated in CU’s look, while the white road top has black numbers with silver trim and additional gold trim elsewhere. Pant colors are black and gold; the black pant has gold trim, the gold pant silver trim. New fabrics also improve issues from heat management and uniform weight to making it increasingly hard for the opponent to grab various points.

The CU uniforms that were adopted last year (Nike redesign) do have silver in them.

"From a design standpoint, incorporating one of the official school colors, silver, back into the uniform for the first time since 1981 was one of the main components of the makeover."

There is a silver outline around the numbers on the white uniforms. They also have silver trim on the gold pants.

I can't stand all the tinkering with the uniforms and especially the logo. We had something great going in the late 80s/early to mid 90s then in the late 90s they messed it up. We finally had a good looking tradition going and some idiot killed it so they could sell a few more jerseys for a year or two.

Bring back the big block #ers and letters on black and white jerseys with gold helmets and take that italics crap off of it. Keep it like that, and NEVER change it. If you look at any school that is known for their traditional uniform, they have kept it the same for decades... Why can't CU do that?

I stand corrected. However, the silver outline around the numbers is hard to see.

Agreed, especially with the logo tinkering they did about 5 years ago. Granted it was a very minor change, but I still like the previous buffalo with the block "CU" inside it instead of the italicized "CU". Same with the "COLORADO" lettering on the front of the uni's.

yup. it ended in '95 i believe. '94 was the last year those great unis were put on the players. i loved them. definitly loved the road unis. look at the cover of SI after the Michigan game. those unis were friggin great.

my brothers and i all agree that the unis of the late 80's to the early 90's were the absolute best unis ever put on a CU football player. they definitly should have been kept.

Those uniforms kick major ass. (the '94 ones) Simple, bold, COLORADO. It just can't get better than that. Anyone think there is a chance we get to see our Buffs back in them in the near future?? I hope...

87 I hope we go back to that. However, as I was once told, "Hope in one hand and s#!& in the other and see which one fills up faster."
I agree that those unis were our best look. The reality is we are a slave to Nike's b-squad design and marketing crew.
The block COLORADO was somewhat unique nationwide and still is. I would love to see us go back to that. Further, I would like to see some sort of a "throwback game" from CU.

We can't afford it. Plain & simple, the AD NEEDS the Nike money. Therefore, we're pretty much at their mercy.

if you hate all the tinkering with the uniforms, wait for this year.

Ummmm, what did they do this season?

I've always felt that Notre Dame and Penn State have the best uniforms in college football. At least before the swoosh showed up on the Lions'. But even then, it's not bad....
