He didn't learn from the asterisk game?

He questions Texas' toughness

"My defense will get to a point where they will be mean, nasty and onery (expletive) and that's what you need for Texas," Schnellenberger said. "Texas will move the ball with tit-for-tat, screens and options, but we'll make them pay a price whenever they catch one of those dinky passes. We'll put three hats on them and make them not want to get up, that's the way to beat Texas."

Texas isn't that tough

Where does he coach Florida Panhandle or something?

The mighty Owls of Florida Atlantic. They open up in Austin against Texas. I'm sure it was just a thing to try and get his team fired up for the game, but it will probably come back to haunt him.

The old fart has a nice theory there, except he left out the part where Texass will run another whole unit of ***** recruits out on the field for the next play. And another set after his guys hit them. Meanwhile, his Owls are going to be running the same set of ** kids all day. It won't end well for Howie... :smile2:

John Hessler had his best game ever after smellyberger said, "I don't want a damn asterisk when we beat them because Detmer's not playing." I still :smile2: everytime I think of that.

That was a classic game, thanks to the big mouthed old drunk. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed watching a coach who wasn't coaching the fuskers fail as bad as he did at OU, and anyplace he's gone since. What a total dooooshebag...

My mother works at FAU and she has said many times that the guy has really flipped his lid!

I realize that, but he justed added a bunch of bulletin board material to a goliath. You have to be careful how you say things sometimes.

You keep that kind of talk inside the locker room. Anybody ever see the documentary on the 1980 USA hockey team? Herb Brooks kept dissing the Russian players, saying they look like Mr. Magoo or whatever. He was bringing this invincible group of all-world behemoths down to earth so his team would feel like it was on the same level. Brooks didn't make the mistake of letting the press know about his little motivational tactic.

FAU does have some players, and they keep getting better. But I met Smells of Bourbon at the Fl Coaches Clinic in Daytona, and he was nearly incomprehensible. He had just come out of a 1 hour session about how to start a program. Very uncomfortable. I wanted to bring up the astrisk game, but that would have meant standing and talking to him longer.
