Polk to redshirt according to Post

does anybody actually believe this ......

The dramatic improvement of junior tailback Kevin Moyd convinced the offensive coaches they could do without Polk this season, Hagan said. Colorado is expected to start sophomore Demetrius Sumler against the Rams, with Moyd, Scott and Stewart also getting carries, Hagan said. Moyd, 5-7 and 185 pounds, has had only four carries in his college career but has been one of the pleasant surprises of August camp.

I believe polk will redshirt, I believe sumler will start. As far as moyd playing before scott, I never rule out anything with this staff.

I don't care who starts, just get a running game that can give you 200-250 every game.

Yes, I do. The coaches need a player that understands all the assignments, not just what to do when carrying the ball. As the season wears on I think we'll see less and less of Moyd but he'll get some PT to start the season. From what I've heard, after they "beat the Florida out of him", he's become a well respected member of the team and has played well on special teams. Is he more talented than Scott or Stewart? Hell no, but he's being rewarded for working hard and knowing the offense.

Where did that quote come from??

Moyd is a player

HIGH SCHOOL—As a senior, he was an honorable mention All-Dade County selection as he carried the ball 160 times for over 900 yards and 10 touchdowns. His junior season, he had 90 rushes for 770 yards and five touchdowns. Some of his top prep games include a win against Miami Jackson in his junior year when he rushed 16 times for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Later that season against South Plantation in the first round of the playoffs, he rushed 17 times for 173 yards and one touchdown, as Northwestern prevailed 35-7. In his senior campaign, he ran wild against South Plantation again, as he had 20 carries for 150 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-14 win. Under coach Roland Smith, Northwestern was 7-4 his senior season, losing in the first round of the state playoffs, 12-1 his junior year, losing in the state regional finals and 10-4 his sophomore season. A three-time all-Dade Country performer and four time letterman in track, he ran the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays, the 300-meter hurdles (38.0 best) and competed in the long jump (23-0). His 4x800 relay team won the conference championship his freshman through senior years, and the track teams were the state champs in 2003 and runner-ups in 2004.

Northwestern Head Coach Roland Smith says of Moyd, "He’s been a guy who has been a difference maker on the field. He’s a speedster. He runs track. He’s a hurdler, and he’s a very fast, powerful runner. Anytime he gets the ball in his hands he can take it to the house, from anywhere on the field. If you give it to him on the draw and do a good job of blocking, he’s a guy that if he gets in the open field, no one is going to catch him. I’ve seen some guys, some track guys, that tried to get an angle but couldn’t get him. He’s got that long stride where it looks like he’s not moving, but he can run. And he’s a very powerful runner. He’s the type of runner where the more he carries the ball, the more he pounds on you, the more you don’t want to tackle him. It’s like he’s punishing you more than you’re punishing him. He delivers the blow instead of taking the blow."

I believe that we have an OL this year that can help Moyd achieve his level of success.

Good to hear Moyd is taking advantage of this situation.

With the depth we now have at RB and youth in the OL, I think this is a wise move by Polk.

I like the redshirt so long as Polk isn't needed on the field. If he's needed, I hope they burn that redshirt and get him in there.

Good move. I don't like the idea of losing three RB's after all of their eligibility is up in one year. Losing two is much better

definately agree...i just hope Moyd truly is the better player, because I'm all about the best players on the field no matter what!...curious too how last friday's article said Polk was against the idea of redshirting and come Monday he is telling the coaches he wants to redshirt now??

It says in the article that Hagan says it was Polk's idea to redshirt. Where did that come from? Everything I've read said Polk was against the idea and would play special teams if needed just to get on the field. Now all of a sudden it was his idea? WTF????

I'm not going to question the decision, as it was apparently made by Ray himself. I am still of the belief that by the end of the year, he'll either be the best or the 2nd best running back on the team. In the end, this will work out well for him. As has been mentioned previously, if D Scott lives up to the hype, he'll probably be gone after his junior year, which would give Ray two years to showcase his talents.

I think this goes to show that the recruiting rankings are not always on point. Polk, a four star recruit, is red-shirting. Stewart, a two star, will play.

I, however, do acknowledge that Stewart may not be red-shirting for special teams reasons and that Polk may prove to be an incredible RB. My guess is he (Polk) will someday be NFL worthy. Frankly, I'm slightly disappointed not to be able to see Polk this season. I am very excited about the Scott/Polk combo in the coming years.

I wish I could just wake up tomorrow and have it be Sunday morning.

Politics brutha, politics. Looks better for the program if the article reads the Polk requested it. That's the party line so stick to it.

But really, though, I think its a good move. Why burn a year if you dont have to. Now if DS got hurt (God forbid) then Polk will take his place.

Oh yeah, nothing quite like the intimidation of a 5'7" blocker...

We will continue to recruit talent at the RB position. The RS may help Polk, but that's the only reason he should be redshirted.

Whats the deal with lockridge? is he gonna play this year? If he redshirts we have 3 RB's leaving at the same time

I was wondering the same thing. The latest depth chart in the BDC lists him as injured, but I don't recall what the injury was or how serious it was.

EDIT: Found the injury answer here, but I guess it's still undetermined when he's expected back:

The article mentions that Kevin Moyd has improved and doing well. I'm always happy for a player who works hard and is rewarded. I'll also note that I got to one practice in early August. I saw something very interesting. Moyd was being "motivated" by a coach. Another coach started to look around to see if anyone was watching what was going on. Sometimes when coaches "motivate" players it isn't something "nice." I'm sure many of you recall a player who failed Bieniemy's attempts at "motivation." The situation I observed did not have anything to do with a girl's name, but it was clearly motivation. And it looks like the player has responded positively.

I too, was thinking Polk would play this year. As with anything, there are pluses and minuses with him redshirting. Hopefully the plus side outweighs the minus side.

Based on what I have read about Polk this fall in the paper and from posters who have attended practices he is struggling with catching the ball. This probably has much more to do with Moyd's rise than his ability to block. Cortlen Johnson was a very accomplished blocker at 5"9" btw.
