Offense

QB- It was a good day for little Hawk. 20-29 with only one pick for 214 total yards. He also gained 24 yards rushing along with 2 TDs. Not bad. He really looked good today. I didn’t think he was electric out there. The game plan was pretty ordinary. Overall I think he was pretty good for the first game.

RB- I really expected D Sumler to do well. He didn’t really do that bad, but he didn’t light it up either. Ten carries for 41 yards. I don’t want to put it all onto his shoulders because our interior line was in flux the whole night. I don’t like the constant switches Grimes made all night. He needs to go with a starter and stick with him. CSU did well on D containing the run until the second half. They didn’t really give up any big plays.

Darrell Scott was impressive. He just racked up the YAC yardage. He doesn’t go down easily. He’s a grinder and can put it into second gear and show his speed. I’m sure the game will slow down for him as he gets more PT. He’s definitely a candidate for the #1 imo.

Speedy Stewart was like a pinball out there. Man he’s fun to watch. He made a freshman mistake when he lost the ball but I’m sure he’ll learn quickly. He should see a lot of PT this year.

What happened with Moyd? I didn’t hear if he got hurt or what. I expected to see him on the field. ????

FB- Cantrell and Behrens out there Sunday. No carries for either of them.

WR- The only stand out I noticed was Scotty McKnight. That kid is money. He catches damn near everything coming his way. I am so impressed with him. 5 catches for 67 and 1 td.

Patrick Williams had a good day until he cramped up. Lady Blaise said the coaching staff was on his ass about that. No excuses. You’re a captain Patrick. But it was nice to see him making plays out there. He is fine, I noticed him jump over the bench during the post game presentation.

Josh only had one for 15. Not really worried here. He should see plenty of opportunities come his way as the season progresses. He made his mark on ST’s .

I didn’t really notice Kendrick Celestine until later in the game. I think Melton is above him on the depth chart. He did have that one play in the fourth that should’ve been a TD. I hope to see more of KCelestine. Depth is a big concern at the WR spot.

TE- Devanny had some nice catches. You have to love how he catches the ball away from his body. Even when Geer comes back Devanny will still see PT.

Deehan was out there for some plays. I thought he’d be more of a threat out there. I wish Helfrich would use him more. This kid will be the next great CU TE.

OL- The bookends did well from what I saw. Solder was solid, and the only glitch was Millers penalty call. Other than that you have to be happy with our tackles.

The guards are another story. They didn’t play terrible. I’m not trying to say that. But I wish Grimes would pick a starter and go with it. Behrens made a couple of mistakes. I expected that. This is his first game. MTM also played a lot. He did well also. I just wish he’d pick one or the other. Devin Head did well besides the personal foul he received. But I don’t mind that so much. Sure the penalty sucked, but I like his nasty streak.

Sanders still had issues. I think one was he snapped the ball when Cody was changing the play. I think he had 3 bad snaps. No?

Overall the line wasn’t that impressive. Or at least it wasn't what I was hoping for. It’s still the first game. Grimes is a solid coach. We’ve got one more game to sort things out. If our line plays like they did today vs. WVU then we’ll lose for sure.

I disagree about the O-line valdez. They allowed us to run it down the rams throats in the second qtr and they didn't allow a sack! Pretty good IMO when your two guards are new.

Defense

The D really controlled the lammies for most of the game. They kept every pass in front of them, minus the TD pass. Overall a good showing.

DL- Not a great day imo. I thought some more pressure would've been nice. The lammies QB seemed to sit in the pocket for a while.

The DT did well as expected. Nice sack by Nicholas for a loss of 10. Hypo didn't have any sacks but created some chaos in the trenches.

The DE's are still unknown for me. Brace did okay. Didn't notice too much from Lucas. Lucas is the key here. He needs to step it up.

LB- Jeff Smart was all over the field. 9 solo tackles and 2 assisted for 11 tackles. Awesome game. I also liked seeing Brad Jones putting pressure on the QB. He finished with 7 solo and 1 sack. Sipili did a great job as well. I loved watching Mohler. He was a little excited as you could tell, but his speed is awesome. Overall the LB's did great. SPEED!

CB- Not horrible. McKay allowed one or two plays but did well for the most part. Chapelle got burned for the TD. Or it may have been blown coverage. Not sure.
Overall they really didn't allow too much. They only allowed 187. Not bad for what was supposedly the worst secondary ever.

S- Walters is going to be all big 12. He is a rocket. Nice pick for him as well. Stay healthy Ryan.

Good job to Dykes as well. He didn't suprise me at all. He's been having a great Fall Camp and i knew a lot of you were underestimating him. He'll give up some plays, but he is a solid safety. Smart player.

The guards were suspect big time. The lambs pushed the line from the middle. They didn't allow a sack, but Cody was flushed from the pocket too many times. If CSU can do this to us than just imagine what WVU will do.

They didn't really open too many holes. But as we wore them down the line finally started to do so.

Devin Head is a JR. He played alot last year. Grimes needs to pick a kid and stay with him.

JMHO though. I'm no expert here. Just a fan like you guys.

i definately agree with the assessment of Cody and the passing game...he had great numbers, but I kept questioning why we were so vanilla in the passing game....Cody had a lot of missed opportunities to look down field and pick up some big chunks of yards....i don't know if we still don't have that deep threat or ability, but that will be a very needed puzzle piece for the entire success of the offense

I think all around they did a great job protecting Cody, but you're dead on...i expected to see some big holes for our backs to run through and that didn't happen at all...every 8 yard gain was earned by the RB's IMO...My personal assessment of this problem was the Hurry Up Shotgun Offense....I'm not going to jump to conclusions this quickly but I think this style of offense makes it difficult to run the ball

If you watched closely, the Ram OLB's were able to jump in instantly on our rushing plays from the Shotgun offense....there was no disguising the run, and they were able to blitz straigt forward to get the RB

The play action worked awesome. The lammies were very aggressive. We got them more than once on the PA.

We did run the shotgun, but it wasn't really a 'hurry up' offense. We really took our time out there. We can run the ball from the shotgun, we just need time to gel.

the play action definately did work great, i forgot about that...except Cody never hit the deep receiver...i guess i was hoping for a little more explosion from the offense, starting with big running lanes...but I agree...a little time to gel and hopefully by WVU we're ready to rumble...all in all a great first game

The playcalling by Helfich was very basic.

ya. we ran very few downfield specific plays and we definitely repeated some of the plays a LOT. Looking forward to what this offense can do when it is opened up. The only time that we did that in the CSU game, Scotty got open for a long TD!

He threw some really impressive "out" routes yesterday. Was great to see the zip on them!

Brad Jones followed Sperry all over the field last night and shut him down. He was a stud and probably the defensive player of the game.

Grades

QB B-
Solid day by Cody. Nothing great. Not Horrible.
RB C+
The potential is there. The production was hampered by they Oline.
OL C
The Bookends are solid. But the interior needs improvement.
WR C+
Only one catch for JFly. But Scotty McKnight picked up the slack. I know they're better than last nights showing.

DL C
Hypo was doubleteamed all night. But still created havoc. Nicholas had a good night. Need to see alot more from the bookends.
LB B+
Solid nights for Sipili, Smart, Jones, Mohler. Great pass D.
DB B
Okay. Not bad. Definitly room for improvement. Solid play by both safeties.
ST B-
Room for improvement for sure. But JFly picks up the slack. He's awesome.

Tough grader! DB's get second best grade...wow. Loved the LB's. I think WR's played well didn't drop a ball. I think we just have a shaky feeling about the offense because I feel we didn't see a couple dominate drives strung together whether it was due to penalties or mental mistakes. I thought my grades were tough. Anyone know of a replay of the game? I would love to see it since I was at the game.

DB's did well. Alot better than i expected. They were responsible for at least 2 sacks. Safties definitly impoved that grade imo.

Kinda dissapointed in our offense. I expected way more from them.

Dykes did have a good breakup on a deep ball that he almost picked. Walters plays like a linebacker. I thought McKay looked lost out there and made Rashaun Greer look too good. Brad Jones played a big part in the sacks with his help on Sperry

V, a couple of thots:

QB - Cody managed the game. He threw the ball away when necessary, and he had a couple of nice runs. For the most part, he was on target. B

RB - they did well with what they were asked to do - run between the tackles. I don't remember a single designed play to the outside. They also pass blocked well (I sure hope that continues). B

OL - Seemed a little lost early on. Looked a lot better in the 2nd half. No sacks!!!! Gotta stop the silly penalties. B-

WR - Can't remember a single pass thrown to where WR should have been - they ran good routes. No drops!!!! B

DL - All sacks were by the DL; Buffs didn't have to blitz. Seemed pourous in the 1st half but executed the adjustments after half time. They also kept the OL off the LB's, at least in the 2nd half. B-

LB - Agree with the B+. They looked fast, smart, and agressive.

DB - All the DB's made some plays. That said, they gave up 27 completions. I think they missed Jimmy Smith, and the secondary will be better with him in there. B-

ST - Only glitch was the kr for a td. Punting was okay, kick-offs were good, and place kicking was perfect. Return game was above average. A-

I agree with your QB assesment. The running game wan't that good untill the fourth quarter though. I'm not ready to place all the blame on Sumler yet. He didn't have much room to work with.

We need the OL to gel so we don't have any issues like we did sunday. There wasn't alot of room to run the ball.

Brad Jones had a sack. I expected some more pressure on the QB though. Better QB's will kill us with that much time.

My grade was inflated because i was impressed with them. They did well imo. With the exception of one play, they kept everything in front of them. It's the first game and they should build on this preformance. The Walters and Dykes were great.

ST - Only glitch was the kr for a td. Punting was okay, kick-offs were good, and place kicking was perfect. Return game was above average. A-
He didn't get all of it on the KR by the lambs. But that isn't Goodman's fault imo. We didn't really tackle well on ST's.

Good analysis RDB. I'm just nitpicking. :smile2:

Yeah, I wasn't disappointed with Sumler. I thought he did okay, but the run game just wasn't clicking in the 1st half, and that's when Sumler had most of his carries.

Brad Jones had a sack. I expected some more pressure on the QB though. Better QB's will kill us with that much time.

Okay, how are we gonna count this one? Jones lined up at DE in a 3-point stance, blew by the OT, and got the sack. So who gets bragging rights, the LB's or the DL's???

They did do well. They made good open field tackles and kept the lammies in sight. Just too many openings in the zones - gotta close on the receivers. I think alot of this was by design to protect the new corners; lots of zone, few blitzes, etc. The td looked like a blown coverage, but that's correctable. Even the PI penalty was a good play since it denied a touchdown. At least now they have something on film that coach Brown can use to teach 'em up.

I liked what I saw Sunday nite. I thought the halftime adjustments by the staff were better than any compared to last year (except maybe the landthieves games). Good Start!!!

Goodman is not kicking off. Davis is. 3 touchbacks is more than we had all of last year.

My bad. Thanks for the correction. Davis did good, so don't think i'm trying to slam his preformance. There was just a couple that he didn't get ahold of. He's been putting them in the endzone consistantly during fall camp. At least from what i remember.

What is he listed as on CUBuffs.com????:smile2::lol: Maybe Jones could teach the DE's a thing or two about rushing the QB. **I keed i keed**
