Way too much negativity right now, especially on the offense...

I laugh at some of you guys, get rid of the spread, cody sucks, throw the ball down the field, blah,blah.. I'm not sure what you guys thought going into this season, but from reading some of these posts in here, you would think the expectations for this team was to be averaging 50 points a game and going to a BCS bowl. Was today embarassing? Yeah, we played like crap.. I ain't going to dispute any of that.. But let's look at the facts, we were playing 4 OL that are underclassmen, other than Williams our receivers are underclassmen, our QB is an underclassman, our RB's are all underclassman.. This is a young team on offense and you are going to have to expect this team is going to struggle at times.. We got behind today, but we still kept fighting and ended up winning the game at the end. Proud of how this team FINISHED the game today.. We are going to continue to get better and will have a successful season.. Stay positive with these guys on offense.. Scott, Speedy and Josh Smith are going to be big playmakers for us as the season goes on.. And give Eastern Washington some credit, they played hard against TTech and they brought their A game again today..

you just are trying to avoid getting a public waxing. let's not forget who the boo ber was in chat.

No, criticizing the coaches in game decisions and the defense are not part of the offense...

im sure you remember. i remember that you drilled through the ice shelf of my patience today, and that there will be a waxing for it.

I'm not being negative. Cody was horrible in the first half. The team was flat. The game plan was plain vanilla. Our running scheme's were abysmal. But we found a way to win. This game can only help us get better. I personally think our offensive coaches are not quite sure what kind of personality they want this offense to gake yet. They are trying just a bunch of different things. The offensive game plan today just, well, no other way to say it, SUCKED! Yet we still won.

Uhhhh. In game decisions are made on the offense by the coaching staff and....
quit bitching about the defense.

6 points in 2 second halves played so far this year

this all is true, and was noted.

let's just say jimmy has a way of taking that info and irritating the living **** out of everyone to the point where a nun would feel tempted to smash his face with a beer stein.

agree.....defense made good adjustments

as for the offense.....I didn't expect 50 point games but I expect competant play calling and some sort of game plan

I thought the defense played pretty well. There were a couple bad possessions where the other team just marched up and down the field - but overall I thought the D played well.

The offense is woe-ful. Young or not, defenders can not penetrate the line of scrimmage EVERY single play. The playcalling and scheme are not the products of youth. Youth may be reason for poor execution but it is not an excuse for poor play calling and poor schemes.

I am not calling for a drastic overhaul but it is clear to me that the two best RB's are Stewart and Scott. It is clear to me that Cody Hawkins is not a great drop back, shotgun passing QB. I think he would do better as a roll-out, play action QB. It is clear to me that our coaches like to call lots of slow developing misdirection plays. Reverses and bubble screens are plays that take time to develop and must be blocked very well to be successful.

I have harped on this ad nauseum this year. We have the personnel to be a top notch I-formation, power running, play-action passing offense. We have excellent tight ends. We have a group of very nice wide receivers, at least one of whom is a very good possession receiver.

Line up in the I formation with a FB in front of Scott - or line up in a split backfield with both Scott and Stewart in the backfield. Play with Cody under center - with the option of shifting into a shotgun formation if necessary. Bring in two tight ends every once in a while.

It bothers me tremendously when I see us with a goal-to-go situation 6 inches away from the goal line and we throw a pass. (It DID result in a TD) There was another possession where we threw to the FB on 3rd and goal. The inability to gain a tough yard will come back to bite us in the ass one of these days.

I said before the season started that I expected the Buffs to go 6-6 this year and I didn't see anything today to change that prediction. I still think the Buffs will lose several of their upcoming games, partly because of talent and partly because of scheme.

I have to admit 'watching' the game on espn's gamecast was an unnerving experience. When we got down 21-7 I honestly thought here we go again... At any rate though, I'm proud of the team for battling back and pulling out the win but it does sort of feel like a pyrrhic victory. My hope is that the vanilla game plans are a strategy to fake out West Virginia and Florida State but I'm really puzzled by how this lack of explosiveness has been going on for years at CU. Remember how we excoriated the Barnett/Watson offenses for constantly running 3 yard drag routes and 5 yard outs? With absolutely no threat down field of course everyone loaded up the box and scoring points was like pulling teeth. I'm sure this had to do with the talent level being so depleted but I'm still baffled as to how it ever got that way. This used to be an elite football program. Someone should throw up the winning percentage from 88'-99'. With the exception of 97' I'm pretty sure we were up there with the best. Well sorry about going all stream of consciousness on you guys. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the state of the program. So much to be thrilled about and yet so many question marks too.

I don't think it matters with the scheme.. The buffs were sloppy against CSU with penalties, missed blocks, etc. Listening to the EWU announcers and they were saying that Little Hawk was getting roughed up and they made it out like that didn't happen against CSU and he wasn't used to that.. That is where I disagree with them, yes they might be right about today's game, but I remember numerous times in the CSU game that Little Hawk got hit a lot in the game.. They didn't sack him but he was hit enough.. The OL is very young and until that position is completely consistent we are going to continue to be up and down on the offensive side of the ball.

I won't deny that I scratch my head at some of the playcalling at times, but I still think its nitpicking.

"I personally think our offensive coaches are not quite sure what kind of personality they want this offense to gake yet" is exactly how I feel. No rhythm on offense, no continuity.

:bs:

i say jimmy and frank got together before this game and made a pledge together to be as positive as possible to avoid any heat later in the season when they will bag on DH if the season turns out to be "bad". to thier judgement.

they will then point to week two where they supported DH after a poor team performance vs EWU and say they are not always negative!!!

:smile2::lol::thumbsup:

I find it funny that I'm so pointed out as being the "negative" one here where if I remember correctly, I was about the only one last year saying CU had a shot against OU during the week while everyone else, including the kool-aid drinkers were all saying "oh my gosh, we are going to get killed, no chance, blah,blah,blah..

Only time I got extremely irrational after a loss last year was the Iowa State game which I will continue to stand on my soapbox and say that was one of the most inept and ridiculous losses that I've witnessed on TV for the Buffs. And before that it was the CSU loss during Hawk's first year.. I don't remember if I was irrational after the Baylor loss in 06, but I should've been, so you can count that one too..

I had the Buffs going 7-5 and Slade had them going 6-6 before the season started. Our expectations are reasonable for this team and are backed by most pundits in the national media.

I do admit that I'm not sold on Ron "possible Okruch relative" Collins, but I've given him credit when his unit does a good job, like the TTECH wins, beginning of last year (FSU, OU, Kansas games) I gave him credit too, etc.

i never said you were being negative.

it was all a joke.

i agree with your expectations.

just having fun tonight. today sucked balls!!! i was a tense ****er today. i had an uneasy feeling about the game and that sucks. it should not be that way vs a 1AA team. the game turned out that way.

just blowing off steam, in my smart assed way.:smile2:

I understand your point but when someone as negative as you calls others out it comes off as hypocritical. I mean,a positive glass full guy like me can't stand all these negative nancies:smile2:

I have lost all patience,I want results, not hype. I will be targeted all year for being negative if this type of play keeps up. I try to be patient but I just don't have it in me :smile2:

Seriously, you are a passionate buff fan and I remember your shot for OU. I like the discussions here and the people getting fired up, it shows that people care and have passion for this program.

I also admire these guys who have a more calm, patient approach because they have the same passion and can show some reserve unlike myself.

We all want the same for cu,just different ways people express and feel about how we get there.

there are many ways to skin a cat.

Buffs are headed in the right direction.. I think we'll have some pleasant surprises this year and a big win or two at home..

Yeah, I know.. I guess I was making my point towards everyone here who criticizes me and the slades, etc saying we are the ones that are so "negative" all the time.. Didn't mean it to be just directly at only you..

2-0... 5 wins and we are guaranteed a bowl game.. Let's go BUFFS!!

Are you thinking that we can't use this victory towards the base 6 wins to qualify for a bowl? I think there's an ncaa rule whereby a team can use a victory agains an fcs (formerly DII) school towards the 6, but only once in XX number of years. I'm pretty sure that's correct - the win today should count.

The win against the lammies on the other hand........oh, nevermind.

6-6 doesn't guarantee bowl.. It makes us bowl eligible, but if there's no slots available we might be left home.. I believe Kansas was 6-6 a few years ago and they didn't go bowling..

All due respect to the mangino and his accomplishments with a perennial loser, but why would any bowl want kansas if they could choose someone else? That's why they didn't go bowling. If CU goes 6-6 again (which might take a herculean effort) they'll almost certainly end up in a bowl because Colorado is still a name with some star power.

You are correct. I am extremely disappointed that they spend so much time and effort recruiting big tough linemen, big tough blocking backs and the best tailbacks in the country only to permit the offensive coordinator to scheme, design and operate a gimmick/fad offense that does not match the personnel that they have spent so much time and effort bringing into the program. Should I speak the unspeakable truth? Why not? So far the offensive coordinator does not seem to realize that football is played on grass, not in a video game. So what if I sound snide. It seems to be the truth.

uhh. Offensive line play is the key to any offense. Either cody is giving away the snap or they realy are that bad. I prefer former!

Kansas went to the Orange Bowl over Missouri last year because KU guaranteed to buy tickets.

YOU are right... having never seen the players in practices every day (unlike the coaches), you must be right about how the coaches are using the talent that you PERCEIVE they have rather than the talent the coaches KNOW they have! I'm gonna have to go with the coaches on that one.

It's a fan's right to bitch. But unless you've coached, or been deeply entrenched in a program, calling a playbook gimicky, or claiming that the staff is misusing talent is laughable.
