i think the primary reason that this offense isn't working as drawn up is qb.

i would prefer a different offensive philosophy that actually emphasizes the run game, but let's look at what they are doing as opposed to what i wish they woud do.

the staff is basically attempting to run an urban meyer style spread offense. that is the fad of the day right now in college fb. i am not talking about the texas tech version, because it is seriously flawed.

i am talking about the florida, utah, michigan with rodriguez version.

the key to this version of the spread is you need a qb who can run. period, end of story. if you don't have a qb who can beat you with his feet, then you can't freeze the defense and all those backs and wideouts running horizontally in the backfield won't scare anyone. you can't create a mismatch if the defense doesn't have to spy the qb.

cody has heart and guts and brains. what he lacks, still, is the athleticism to run this offense at its highest level. he's gotten bigger and all that, but he just doesn't have the feet to cause the defense to worry about him taking off.

i will also note here for the historically-minded Buffs that one of the primary reasons that the one back offense worked for CU in 94 so well was that kordell was a great runner.

if they are going to insist on this offense, then they better go get a guy who can run it the way urban meyer designed it.

just a thought, no offense intended.

Makes sense.

Cody is no Vince Young. And unlike Graham Harrel, I don't see too many 500yrd games coming off of Cody's arm.

But he is a game manager. So that offense either has to get tailored to his talents, or the QB needs to fit the system.

That I formation is looking better and better.

A lot has to do with Cody's height as well. Most of the reason we run the offense out of the shotgun is so he can see his receivers down field.

Yea the offense develops slowly and Cody Hawkins doesn't really catalyze it but what else do we have. If we ran more of a pro set or wco we would probably be more effective with his skillset.

But then again this isn't half bad

We are not trying to run what Urban Meyer runs at Florida, which is the spread option. And yeah, if your running the option it helps to have a running qb. But we aren't running the option. Not the triple option, not the spread option, not the power I-bone, not the wishbone, not the flexbone or any other option formation. No offense taken.

I only heard the game on the radio BUT...... maybe Hawk is playing close to the vest so that he can show his stuff against WVU and FSU..... WE NEED TO THROW DOWN FIELD!

Scotty McKnight catches the ball for 30+ TD in game one.... why not try it again OR Smith or Celestine?

Run... block.... then set up a large pass play once in awhile.

I am not that upset about this game seeing what Ohio did and Miami (OH) did.... and if u really watched... Miami Fla (whom I hate) played with the Gators till the refs blew a call..... not that his "elbow" was out of bounds.... but did they see if he dropped the ball???? cause he did....
Lets go Buffs..... they can win this game next Thurs and set themselves up nicely for a good season!

I too only listened to the game. But from what I heard, Cody didn't have enough time to make plays down the field. It seemed like the defense was CONSTANTLY in the backfield.

Didn't we have some suspensions that affected this department earlier this week?

Being at the game, A LOT of passes went to the out side. I'm getting a little sick of the wide reciever screen. If cody is going to dump it off I would like to see him get to scott in the middle of the field. Most of our longer pass plays have come when Cody throws it down the middle of the field.

Get use to it. This is how Hawkins O runs. Power I is not going to happen.

1. The spread offense and it's variations aren't a fad. It started in high schools and has steadily run it's way up the ladder to the NFL. Why? Because it works, and if it's run right, it's impossible to stop. Get used to it. That's not to say you wont continue to see more basic 'old school' offenses, but they're gonna be rarer and rarer.

2. There are two words that account for CU's struggles: Offensive Line.... PERIOD.

Urban Myer, R-Rod run spread OPTION offenses. We are not trying to run these, because the only time we run designed QB runs are goal line QB sneaks.

QB isn't our problem, our O Line is our problem. With any offense if you can't open any hole on running plays (or keep the d on the other side of the line of scrimmage), or give your quarterback AT LEAST 3 seconds to make a throw, nothing will be successful.

Allow me to be devils advocate :devil2: What are your other options at QB? Got anyone with wheels?

Bone Buff makes a solid point, it doesnt seem like you guys are running the spread option read play out of the gun, seems like its just straight handoffs (from what I recall from the CSU game). Seems like if you are only going to handoff out of that formation you might as well scrap it becuase you are capitalizing its most important aspect, the possibility of the QB or RB running.

Just my 2 pennies.

ballenger and nelson are the next in line. however, the HUGE issue yesterday was the offensive line, and cody's stats were far from awful, i fail to see what this line of query is expected to yield?

:wtf:

This could be said about any offense.

I'm a believer that you tailor your offense around the talent you have. Mac saw in 1985 that he had talent to run an option offense. He converted a wide receiver (Mark Hatcher) to QB and the rest, as they say, is history.

After watching Florida last night, and some other schools who run this spread option or whatever it's called, I'm not sold. I think we have a big, strong, athletic offensive line, speedy receivers, good TE's, a skilled fullback, some great tailbacks, and a QB who manages the game. That skill set is tailor made for a power I pro-set offense.

Can we run under center.. Let's just try... Just once... Just try, for me? Stupid. Or can we at least try to run to the outside instead of right up the center's ass from the shotgun every single time!?

Our running plays seemed really slow to develop. I mean, we run a lot of delayed handoffs. If DS gets up a head of steam, he is hard to stop. But he was just getting blown up off the handoff, it seamed.

I also thought that Cody was really shallow, close to the line, in his drops. He sure the hell is not very illusive, not withstanding his long run off the fumbled snap. Cody was not very good yesterday.

We dominated the second half, however. This team is very, very young and will continue to improve by leaps and bounds. We need to develop an offensive philosophy. It seemed like we did not know what we wanted to do. I think we need to stop trying to get everybody PT. Go with DS and RS exclusively. Get the ball to DS quicker and get him the ball in space.

Cody still seams to focus on the primary receiver. He telegraphs almost every pass. I am surprised that he does not seem to have the ability to prgress through his receivers. There were several times where he had guys wide open but through to guys that were covered. He just locks in. I thought his strength was his management, but it isn't, I don't think.

The problem is not Cody. He made a couple of bad passes (and some good ones), but Cody was not the that primary reason the offense didn't click. The problem was clearly the O-line. The holes weren't there for the run game, Cody was being pressured the entire game, and the D-line was in the backfield to blow up misdirection plays before they had a chance to develop. At times, the D-linemen were so fast they were barely touched by the O-lineman.

It seemed to me that the biggest culprit was Max Tulioto-whatever, but Behrens looked challenged to me as well. My first thought was that I bet Hawkins wished Maiva(sp) was still here. Improved line play will go along way toward everyone thinking Cody is the answer (not to mention help Scott look better--30-something yards only)

Tatui-Mariner will be a great one. But he missed last year in HS. It says a lot that he is getting significant PT after not playing since his junior year in HS. I agree with you. The O Line sucked. But they are all Fr/Soph. It'll take time.

yeah, so, that would be The. Point.

to run an effective spread offense that ain't gonna be one-dimensional and that can still run effectively, you need a running qb (the way urban designed it).

t-tech can't run and they get punked a couple times a year when they play someone who can muscle them.

hell, if you want, go back a couple years and look at the ut championship team. the difference between damned good and national championship? vince freaking young, because he could throw and run. they spread it out and defenses still couldn't key the pass because they had to account for a qb with wheels.

i am personally starting to think that this offense just won't work at a high level without a running qb.

just my 2 cents. i like cody. he's a gamer.

It was pretty effective when Alex Smith ran it at Utah, and Cody is every bit as mobile as that guy. Oklahoma has run an effective spread without a great mobile qb in the past, Jason White won a heisman out of a spread O.

It doesn't matter what type of offense you are trying to implement, if your offensive line gets dominated like CU's did yesterday, you are going to be inept.

We don't have the depth (or top to bottom talent) at WR to run a spread offense. :sad1:

This was true. The OL had protection problems all day long.

And you still aren't seeing the point. WE ARE NOT RUNNING THE SPREAD OPTION. Do you see us running any option plays? No? Then we aren't running an option offense. The "spread" offense and the "spread option" offense are two different offenses.
