My thoughts on yesterday's game

My armchair QB opinion. :smile2::lol:

The offense
QB's
The Good
-Hawk had a horrible day. But the line didn't give him much time to do anything. He had to make some plays out of nothing, when he was flushed pretty much every other play. He did manage to pull his head out of his ass to make some plays to put us in the situation to win the game at the end.

The Bad- Okay where do I start. This was just a ****ty day all around. Missed alot of wide open recievers. Or when he did see them he overthrew them. Didn't seem confident all day. Helfrich's playcalling wasn't getting us anywhere.

Grade D.
*****************************************
RB's

The Good-Sumler continues to be a nonfactor in the offense. But he's not calling the plays. He only got the ball twice. I really didn't understand the playcalling all game. Stewart and Scott ran the ball well, when the line actually blocked. Scott’s run for 22 was pretty impressive. Give this guy a chance and he’s a legit threat for 6 every time he touches the ball. His vision is amazing. Rodney Stewart is doing well also.

The Bad- It’s crazy to me that we can’t run against EWU. They seemed to know exactly what we were going to do. But ultimately the blame has to go to Helfrich. They did make a decent adjustment at the half, but the line was getting dominated all friggin day. The playcalling was really bad today.
Grade D
*********************************

WR’s
The Good- Not much. Patrick Williams had a clutch catch deep. He finished with 4 catches for 54 yards. Scotty McKnight had a quiet 6 for 90. Josh Smith had his first TD catch with a great grab. Deehan also caught his first TD.

The Bad- Helfrich doesn’t seem to have any confidence throwing the ball downfield. They showed our passing game no respect. I think Zimmer commented that they were pretty much playing only 10yards from the line of scrimmage the whole day. They knew we weren’t going deep. So that allows them to do whatever they wanted to.

Grade C
***************************************
OL

The Good- No bad snaps today. Or at least I didn’t really notice any. Daniel Sanders had a good game.

The Bad- Everything. We got humiliated by a D2 school. Their Dline just annihilated us. I understand that MTM is a freshmen and Behrens is a RSFR. But they got dominated all game long. Same with Ryan Miller and Nate Solder. They got worked. The DE’s just used their speed to collapse the pocket. The Guards got bullrushed all game long. With your dline playing that good, you can have your LB’s and DB’s roam free to make plays. They were in Cody’s face in just about every play.

Grade F
**********************************************
The Defense

DL

The Good
-They did get some good pressure on Nichols. I'd like to see them become more consistant. Herrod is starting to play really well. Big George and Nicholas did well to disrupt things in the middle. Still waiting for the DE's to step up. They did make the halftime adjustments to start hassling Nichols more. He really got rattled by the pressure late in the game. He was in a rocking chair during the first half. Big George is the man.

The Bad- Only one sack all game. Not the way i wanted to see the defense heading into the WVU game. Pressure, pressure, pressure. I was also very upset about the subs. Or at least how they sub kids in and out. EWU seemed to have the jump on us because we weren't ready. THis needs to be fixed.

Grade C
*******************************************
LB's

The Good-Easlily the best unit for us all day. Mohler had a monster game. He was everywhere. They had him lining up His injury wasn't bad. Last i heard, it was a deep shoulder bruise. So he should be fine for the WVU game. Jeff Smart also had a great day. He just sniffs out the ball out there. He's a solid as they come. I really like how they use Brad Jones. He recorded the only sack of the game. He is a great athlete.

The Bad- I also don't like how they are substituting kids in and out.

Grade B
*****************************************
CB's

The Good-They kept everything in front of them. The seem to be up and down during the game. But in their defense they did seem to shut things down in the second half. McKay is a huge liability out there with his constant arm tackling. Is he afraid of hitting someone? Cha'pelle Brown had a good game. He is a awesome open field tackler. He really came up big with the pick as well. Jalil had his moments. Unfortunately he'll be remembered for getting dragged 15 yards for a TD. That was really sad. We really need Jimmy Smith and Anthony Wright to heal up for the WVU game. Ryan Walters had another big game. He had a FF and 8 tackles.

The Bad- Jalil getting used by the EWU reciever for the first score. I don't think i'll ever forget that. Sure they are young, but we are about to see some better QB's than Billy Farris and Nichols. If we play like we did today then these guys will tear us apart.

Grade C
*****************************
ST's

The good- Josh Smith is a threat for 6 every time he touches the ball. I also liked seeing them put DScott back there. The blocking is pretty damn good as well. The kickoffs are really good as well.

The Bad- Hold onto the ball Josh. I hope the missed field goal was just a fluke deal. He should've made that easily.

Grade C (Feast or famine with this unit)
**************************************
Coaching

Helfrich- F
It seemed like he didn't make any adjustments. I don't buy the argument that we are holding back our playbook. When your down 21-3 vs a D2 school that goes out the window.

Collins-C
Not good during the first half, but i did see a significant improvement in the second. The Defense won the game for us.

Hawk- F
You better get a handle on this. If Helfrich continues down Shortbus lane, people will be calling for his head.
*******************************************
Overall-F
No excuses. We shouldn't have been in this situation. Hopefully we can turn this negative into a positive. WVU will be pissed off coming into Boulder on the 18th.

Eastern Washington is a good team. Relax some, there will be more frustrations this year and there will be bright moments. This is not a bcs team, this is a 6-7 win team.

The conference games will be brutal. If we give their QB's as much time as we gave the last two, it'll be a long season.

I was pleasantly surprised by the adjustments on defense during the game, but offense was another story. We're going to be relying on Jones a lot this year for pressure on the QB.

This is jmho. I'm not trying to act like a expert or a coach.

 when throwing out your grades, how much thoght was given to the fact that their strengths played to our weaknesses? or did you just write ewu off as someone who we should mudhole based on divisional tier?

are the coaches to turn our kids into something they are not within a week?how does that factor in?

I think 7 wins is realistic. We seem to play up or down to competition. We need to find a way to win one of the next two though IMO.

This is what I am starting to see how this staff works. They can't get the guys up for games like this, but for some reason, they can for bigger games and competetion. Agree about the adjustments. We did win the second half 24-3. Maybe they just needed to wake up.

So you're saying you expected our offensive line to get dominated? You were talking up that mighty EWU defensive line all week, huh?

maybe. i don't know? did you see the walters quote about preparing for this game like they were the green bay packers? i do not think that connotes that the staff is failing to get the kids up for the game.

all week i had some lesson plans to attend to, so i did not get a whole lot of time to talk up anything. however, as anyone in chat can vouch, i was VERY VERY nervous about this game. i certainly gave them props for their accomplishments last year and knew who the hell we were facing, and gave some air time to the fact that they gave tech hell.

i thought we would win. i did not think your prediction was realistic, no. i gave you the benefit of the doubt that it was made in jest until some of your posts stepped over the line. again, your post in the vanilla thread is lucid and a lot of it is good food for thought, inho.

it is just not like you to go nuclear and dis kids. rather you tend to be more reasonable. glad to see you are back.

I think your grades are the most accurate I've seen yet

The thought occurs to me that last night FSU played 28 freshmen (according to the recap on ESPN) and the score of their game was 69 - 0. Likely they didn't play someone of EWU's caliber but the kids came to play and they executed. Youth can only go so far as an excuse. Bottom line, we got pushed around and were fortunate to win.

While I have some concerns about how far this team has really advanced from last season I also understand anyone can stumble out of the gate for a week or two. I think the next three games will define who these Buffs are. Matt's right , play like they did against EWU and WVU beats us by 21 and that may only be the beginning.

I think it would be good to start questioning a couple of things...

1. Is Cody best for this team? I hear much talk about him being an excelllent game manager and I do not doubt that. But how much fear does he strike in the eyes of an opposing defense as he continues to pump out these little sideline flicker passes?

2. What about that Offensive line?? Maybe Hawkins could get it down the field better if he had a bit more time?? How mentally tough and focused are these kids?

3. Pressure, where is it going to come from. The line seems pretty good against the run but it's starting to look like same old unit where pass defense is concerned. Could we get healthy against Pat White? I dunno, he threw for 205 and 5 td's the first week. Last year and even against CSU we have shown the ability to make second rate qb's look pretty good. I hear the counter "well he didn't look so good this week." True but I don't think anyone would confuse our defense with East Carolina's either.

To me the most frustrating thing about all of this is that everything is in place. The staff, the kids, the size, the talent, the speed. It's all there. This can be a very good team. We could win 8 or 9 games. I hope over the next 10 days they gel and really show what we all know they can do.

That's the big question and how tough will it be if and when Hawk needs to replace Cody. :fragez:

Players can say a lot of things. Did you believe Gartrell Johnson when he said CSU was gonna kick CU's ass?

It's easy to say some things that sound like you're ready, whats hard is to get the entire team (most of this team wasn't around for the Montana State loss) up for a AA team.

could not say for sure. human nature would connote that it would be tough. however i think it clear that cody did the best he could with the time he got. yes, he made a couple mistakes, too.

is it reasonable to expect him to be all-american quality with a o-line that was porous yesterday? can we shore up that o-line? would that make a difference?

We should've stomped them. I understand they are a good team, and our DB's isn't the stregnth of our squad. But there's no excuses as to why they almost left folsom with a W. We played like ****. It looked like 2006 version of the offense out there.

Tech committed 18 penalties during the EWU game. That was the only reason it looked close imo.

i believe that HE was entertaining the possibility.

that i can believe in.

talk about that. it goes well beyond the db's. we had suspensions and injuries marring the picture as well.

why is it that despite all these factors, it is inconcievable that they win?

Almost every team in the country every year has games like this BTW. Maybe this is ours. I would like to see how we fare when the playbook gets opened up against someone liek WV.
I will admit, you were right about the inexperienced O-line. They got worked.

Good point. I think Hawk would move if he has to but it would have to hurt.
So do you settle for a game plan based on well managed short passes and the running attack or a kid who is less composed but more dangerous downfield? The offensive line has so much to do with the answer to that question too.

I agree with your post. Right now I am expecting 4 or 5 wins this year with this schedule. I hope something magical happens against WVU to make me up that to 6 or 7. I don't care how good EWU is, they are still AA school. If they can bitch slap us around what will the rest of the teams on the schedule do?

I will still watch every game and cheer on as loud as I can. Here is hoping for some upsets and 6 or 7 wins.

We are a young team operating a new offense, but this game with EWU was pretty pathetic. I expected us to really put the game away by halftime. Not a reach imo. Our offense made no real adjustment all game long. If this was our stumble, we got really lucky it was against a team like EWU. If this happens during conference play we are going to be humiliated.

1. Is Cody best for this team? I hear much talk about him being an excelllent game manager and I do not doubt that. But how much fear does he strike in the eyes of an opposing defense as he continues to pump out these little sideline flicker passes?

Everyone is on Cody all the time. This time it's justified. He had a bad game. But this kid is only a sophmore. I'm not ready to say that he's in the sophmore slump. You have to expect a bad game here and there. I keep hearing all the "he's too short" or "he doesn't have an arm" opinions. Which to me is beating a dead horse. No one is going to mistake Cody for a NFL QB. But he's proved himself as our best option at that position. He can make the deep passes and doens't force the ball into traffic. The playcalling has been very mediocre as of late.

He's the best option we have on the team. jmho.

2. What about that Offensive line?? Maybe Hawkins could get it down the field better if he had a bit more time?? How mentally tough and focused are these kids?

Good lord the Oline played like crap. Someone was in Cody's face just about everyplay. I expected better out of our tackles. But i am not suprised by the guards. MTM and Behrens are freshman. They will only get better with time.

3. Pressure, where is it going to come from. The line seems pretty good against the run but it's starting to look like same old unit where pass defense is concerned. I hear the counter "well he didn't look so good this week." True but I don't think anyone would confuse our defense with East Carolina's either.

I'd like to see better blitz packages. If our DL aren't getting it done then they need to send in our LB's more. But we have to be careful. We can get burned on the blitz real easy. It's kind of a pick your poison deal. Send in too much and get burned for a big loss. Or don't blitz anyone and let the QB pick our D apart. In the end it comes down to the DE's. Someone needs to pick up the slack. I'll also give Collins credit for making the right adjustments to shutout EWU in the second half.

To me the most frustrating thing about all of this is that everything is in place. The staff, the kids, the size, the talent, the speed. It's all there. This can be a very good team. We could win 8 or 9 games. I hope over the next 10 days they gel and really show what we all know they can do.

The only negative is the lack of experience. At least more so on the offensive side of the ball.

I will admit, you were right about the inexperienced O-line. They got worked.

I hope you're right about this being our crap game of the year.

Don't know if someone has already posted this or not, but BuffTV has the 2nd half available for viewing this afternoon.

For better or worse, Cody is the QB. We need to put any talk of replacing him out of our collective minds. It's not going to happen this year, and probably not next year either.

I don't think Cody was the problem yesterday. True, he missed a couple wide open receivers, but the O-line was pourous. I never expected to see Ryan Miller get schooled by a D-2 DE like that.

talk about that. it goes well beyond the db's. we had suspensions and injuries marring the picture as well.

It does go beyond our DB's. The whole team played like ass yesterday. THe thing that worries me most is our playcalling by the coaches.

It took our worst preformance in a long time, to give these guys a shot at winning.
