Special Teams Disaster

What is going on. 2 kickoffs returned for TD's in just 4 games. Seems like we cannot defend kickoffs or punts. Guys are getting great returns against us every time. Something needs to change or someone needs to update his resume. Who is the Spec. Teams coach anyway? :wow:

Kent Riddle and to a lesser degree Hawk himself. ST have been a complete disaster.

I agree. And why weren't we in Max Protect on the punt that was blocked? DUMB. And I'm starting to think that J-Fly needs to sit out on kick-off returns. Ya he has made some good plays but teams are keying on him now and shutting him down. He has made about as many mistakes if not more than good plays imo. I can't believe he dropped that kick-off on the one resulting in a safety and a FG for FSU. Momentum shifter too:huh:

I agree with the issues, and it's not just the big returns (which there have been many), it's also fumbled punts/kick offs and poor decisions on fg and kick off returns.

Not to mention missed FGs.

The blocked punt. Don't get me started. The FSU D-lineman blew our guy off the line like he was made of paper. :wow: It hurt to watch.

Why are we fielding punts inside our own 10? It's entirely frustrating to field punts that should have a (good) chance for a touchback.

You can't seriously expect a Big 12 official to catch such a difficult call as offsides. After all, they probably left their thorazine back home in Omaha.

someone's gotta call out both the damn kickers too....Goodman is a hero somehow for the WVU game, gets a scholarship and then on his next collegiate FG he shanks a kick inside of 30 yards?....And whatever happened to kicking the ball in the endzone for a touchback, could really solve the return problems....crap, even doing what FSU did everytime if you can pooch it high to about the 30 yard line would help

I imagine they're trying to kick it through the endzone most kickoffs. I don't think it's quite well should I shank it or kick it through the endzone, hmm shank sounds better.

Do you know any NFL kicker who kicks all of his kickoffs into the end zone. After 3 games Davis had 7 touchbacks out of 16 kickoffs for 44%. The NCAA leader last year was at 43%. Even Davis' short kicks are around the 7 yard line with alot of hang time because he must have gotten under the kick a little. That's better than 90% of the kicks last year. The returns are not his fault.

Yeah, Davis has been kicking off well. Can't pin this on him.

If I recall, he also had a TD saving tackle on a kickoff. He is not the one to blame for the kickoffs, we have to make sure to close up those lanes. The one they returned, he had a lane that was 10 yds wide.

FIFY - As dangerous as Josh is on returns, he has made far more mental and physical mistakes than big runs. I would rather have someone who is smart and sure-handed back there. Consistency is a must for returns and mistakes are killers. I was surprised hawk put Josh back in after the kickoff that he dropped.

Josh has so much talent, if he can focus on catching the ball, rather than what dance he'll do in the endzone, he could be great. Here's hoping the coaches had a littler sit down with him to get him to refocus.

If you watch our kickoff coverage during the replays you will see guys vacating their "lanes" without being blocked. It appears, and I sure hope this isn't the case, that we have a VERY undisciplined special teams unit. Most of their mistakes are Special Teams 101 fundamentals.

Here's hoping to have a much improved unit heading into conference play. I want to believe the coaches have addressed some of the issues after watching special teams cost us the FSU game.

I've noticed the same thing. No lane discipline at all on the kickoff team. I could have run through that hole on the TD return.

I remember this conversation after the CSU game. There were many people who stated that because he is so dangerous that J-Fly's poor decisions and inconsistency were worth it. I did not agree then and the following games haven't made me any more comfortable. It's not just fumbling the ball either. As others have pointed out, it's just decisions. When to field punts and when not to. When to take what you can get instead of trying something to get more.

Once Josh gets all of this down, he will be truly scary (to the other team and not to me), until then I'd really rather see somebody who won't put the team in a bad spot fielding kicks.

People may not remember but Hawk said when he came here that his policy is that punts from the 5 and out are to be fielded. He says that the 10 yard line rule gives up too many opportunities.

I did not remember that Superior, thanks for that.

I specifically did not say anything about fielding punts inside the 10 but I know that others have. I have just seen punts fielded when I thought they shouldn't be and then running parallel to the line hoping to make something happen. I applaud Josh's confidence. You watch him and he really believes he can make something special happen every single time he touches the ball. I still think the first rule, however, has to be "do no harm".

I agree with the running sideways, that may have worked in high school or with lower level competition but the majority of our competition have players just as fast. Get your ass up the field and take what you can get, if an opportunity opens up to break one go for it but get up field first.
