who decides where the band sits at the road games? why are you at the field level?

i only ask this because it was dang near impossible to hear the band at the FSU game. i was up on the left at the top of the same section. it would be cool if the band could sit up a little higher so the CU fans could hear you and sing along throught the game.

just wondering.

I know we don't have anything to do with it. We get seats from the allotment CU is given and I'd imagine that there are a number of factors that go into it. Part of it is probably getting a large enough block of seats to accommodate everyone. I think the tickets for the seats we use actually have to be purchased so I imagine finding a large enough block for that is rather difficult. I'm not really sure though. All I know for sure is that we don't get any input.

I had no problem hearing you guys. But I was sitting right next to you.

Which instrument do you play? Are you in the photo I posted in the other thread? http://www.allbuffs.com/forums/showpost.php?p=349142&postcount=8

well that figures and im not suprised that you guys dont get any input. just a suggestion here but, try and pass this up the food chain and see if you guys/gals cant be moved a bit further up as a suggestion from a fan who would like to be able to hear the band.

just a guess here but, i would imagine that when the decision is made to take a pep band to a road game, those seats are spoken for before the seats go on sale to the fans. like i said, that is just a guess on my part though.

thanks for the response!

Unfortunately I was not able to go to the FSU game for reasons not worth revisiting again (see my FSU Weekend thread) so I'm not in any of the pics. Even if I had gone I wouldn't have been in the picture though because I'm a tuba player. To any other people who read this thread and have band questions, feel free to ask them.

I would second what 4dem is saying, I was sitting up a little higher than 4dem by only a few rows and I could barely tell the band was even there, let alone make out what and when they were playing.

I was about 24 rows up and could not even tell there was a band down there.

Way back when I was at UNC we used 4-5 trumpets to go around to different seating sections, face the crowd and lead the fight song. It was a big hit! Might be worth a trying or at least have the lead trumpets turn and face the crowd behind the band.

Personally I think seeing the tubas run from section to section would be more entertaing, but trumpets carry the melody.

i heard em pretty well...since i was only 6 rows directly behind the band....bad thing was there were about 5 empty rows between the band and where the rest of the CU fans started piling in and a bunch of major dickweed FSU fans from the student section decided to sit there and try and start fights....things almost got heated once and was quite funny to watch

Well, chances are the bands are normally on field level so that they can be best miced for TV feeds.

After that, the home field probably chooses where to put visiting bands so they're least intrusive to their own fans.

To any other people who read this thread and have band questions, feel free to ask them.

1. What's with all the ****ing horns all the goddamn time?

2. How awesome would it be if the marching band was converted to a marching orchestra?

Those are the only questions that came to mind for me, but I think they both merit responses.

1: Why not?

2: Strings are for pansies.

Hey, I think the marching orchestra is a pretty awesome idea. Has any school ever done that before? I like the idea of someone running around on the field with an 8 foot tall bass on a wheelie cart.

Princeton has a violin player in their marching band.

I have seen bands that march electric guitar and bass. someone has to "march" the amp around on a cart next to the player. it is stoopid.

Monarch high has an electric guitar in the marching band. I thought it was kind of strange but not bad. I don't recall if the amp was in a fixed location or not, didn't watch the halftime show.

Sometimes high school bands and drum/bugle corps will have electric guitar/bas in their percussion pit (on the sideline) and that is fine. College bands don't often have a pit.

Please, I don't want to get into a amplification argument on these boards too..... I'm already enough of a nerd.

It would definitely be very awkward to actually march any sort of amped instrument. In most cases they go with mallet percussion in a front ensemble or "pit". Regardless though, a lot of college marching bands don't have pits. They are far more common in high schools.

On a side note, in high school at least, it is against the rules to march certain instruments. Oboe and bassoon fell into this category. Believe it or not, at least one person died marching these instruments. They tripped and fell and because of the way the reeds are situated, they were actually impaled through their soft palate. This is why you almost never see marching double reed instruments and if they do pop up, it's only for solos on the sideline.

I have a completely unrelated question for all of the fans out there (especially the students). Sometimes we play what's called "Fight Tag" where we play the last quarter or so of Fight CU. It seems like everyone, or at least the student section, thinks we're just starting at the beginning and stopping (very) short when we're really just doing the end of it. Is this just a student section thing that gets ignored due to booze or does everyone think we're just playing the beginning?

I think everyone knows what you are playing but would prefer the full version and sing it anyway.

Me too actually. The only reason we play the tag is due to time because the team can get penalized if we play during live ball. I'd much rather play the whole thing because I'm lazy and don't want to have to pick up my tuba for only 15 seconds of music. I love that people are singing it and I'm not trying to offend anyone, I was just curious about whether it was a conscious decision or not for the average fan to do the whole thing.

I know what you're playing...but that's mostly because I used to play it, too. I think when you just start hearing it, it starts out the same way and by then, everyone's already into the singing mode and ignores it when the melody changes. It's been like that since we started playing it.

I actually think it sounds pretty cool with the students finishing the fight song.

It makes me feel all nice and warm inside because far more students know the fight song than when I started marching here 4 years ago. It could also be that they just sing louder now but either way I like to hear singing. Now if everyone could just learn Glory Colorado and Go Colorado too...

What are you talking about...didn't you get to go to Oklahoma & Kansas twice?

Of course, there was that little Aloha Bowl trip I got when I was a senior...

I went to OSU, OU and to the Colorado State Fair. I think there was maybe a year in there where we had no "away game" at all. I also went to the Fiesta Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Holiday Bowl.

We never got to travel to big out-of-conference games, not even with a pep band. The AD at the time was not at all supportive of the band.

 Good luck with that.
