BOULDER, Colo. (AP)—Colorado coach Dan Hawkins and the university have agreed to a contract extension that could keep him with the Buffaloes through 2012.

Hawkins is 11-9 in his third year at Colorado, and the Buffaloes are 3-2 this season.

The new contract was announced Tuesday. It takes effect on July 1.

Hawkins originally signed a five-year, $4.25 million contract, not including incentives, that was to run through Dec. 31, 2010.

Hawkins can earn incentives for making it to the Big 12 championship game, winning league or a national titles, playing in bowl games and being conference or national coach of the year.

I'm all for coaching stability. It's huge for recruiting, especially when we can start winning with more consistancy.

Actually it was a very level headed extension. Not really a big raise, and only two years. So worst case scenario, god forbid, Colorado hasn't put itself in a very bad position of having to pay him off millions, like other schools have done recently. Plus a big help with recruiting. As an alumni and season ticket holder, I wholeheartedly approve. Nice job Bohn!

I'm hoping the time is coming soon, that we have to give Hawk a big fat raise.

Yeah, I'm not sure why people would have a problem here. Low risk, high reward kinda deal.

This is great news. The biggest problem this program has had the last 15 years is the instability at the coach's position, which caused the recruiting to be up and down like a roller coaster. we aren't going to get a better coach than Hawk, and we should give him the stability to do his job with a long-term plan.

Hawk is the man for the job. If anyone can get the program back to where it was in the McCartney days it is him

Great move...DH needed at least three years to start to move the program in the right direction after the past administration. Now he has another 4 to translate his philosophy into a winning tradition.

Prince has more wins than Hawkins in his tenure and i'm pretty sure he will get canned at the end of this year. just a fwiw.

I'm not too familiar with KSU. How were things right before Prince?

CU went through a lot of crap in the Barnett era and Hawk has had to seriously rebuild the program. He's a great fit for Boulder, for CU and the state of Colorado. He does a lot of things FOR the state that few in his position would from speeches to RVing throughout the state and speaking on the university's behalf. He has been a leader on and off the field.

Time will ultimately tell if Hawk is the answer to the program or not, but I think he'll do well here at CU. He's enthusiasm and outlook makes you want to root for the guy and as an alum I'm very pleased. I wish that translated into more wins on gameday, but he's positioning himself for the future.

I don't see in Prince what I see in Hawk and I'm trying to not see Hawk through my black-and-gold colored glasses.

:yeahthat:
I don't know how KSU has been recruiting (*cough* JUCO *cough*) but Hawkins has actually been going up against the big dogs & winning some of those battles. We have a young team and although we are experiencing what we hope are growing pains, we all recognize we have a young team to build on. Something that can't be shared by your school. Plus, on a national level, we HEAR about CU week in and week out in mostly positive terms. You get the feeling that the media types & non-CU fans actually like the guy even if they aren't fans of the program. I hear of no such talk from around the country (nevermind the state of Kansas) regarding Prince.

As my fellow Buff fans know, W-L records aren't always everything.

p.s. - This was mostly a response to Saul but I forgot to multiquote.

Hawkins record is 11 - 19. If it's only for 2 years, that's OK, but he hasn't started winning and it's year #3. The stability issue is important, so I think it's worth the money. Are we going to get restless if this year turns out to be a 5 or 6 win season?

I'm not. Stevie Wonder could see that things are improving here. Yeah, we got our asses handed to us by Tejas, but so has everybody else so far. In fact, we played them better than anybody else has, not that it's any real consolation. The two teams we've lost to have a combined record of 9-1 right now.

Did you see how much he's getting paid?

$900,000!! Sure, there are some incentives in there that will get him up some - but still, that's LOW. 9th in the Big 12 and about 50th in the country.

Frankly I am amazed that we are getting him for such a low price.

I wish he would try to get his assistants more pay. I think the "employee at will" contract thing is crap. That's a red herring. They don't need lengthy contracts - but they do need more money. I'd like to see them get more money across the board.

He wouldn't have more wins if he played the non conf schedule Hawk does. Adding two or three more patsies each year certainly makes the win percentage look better.

Also, I think the cryptkeeper left KSU talent in better shape tha barnie did here. Especially at the QB position. We had NOBODY for a QB Hawks first year.
