Player Walk & Head Phones

So I checked out the Player Walk last Saturday.

Big George, Hawkins and Bohn were glad handing the crowd. Those three really get the spirit of connecting with the fans. Kudos to them.

A lot of players have earphones in their ears and hands in pockets as they file through the gauntlet. It may be just me, but when the player is tuned out, it kind of contridicts the point of the walk, doesn't it?
 
If it helps them get into the game 2.5 hours before the game and it helps them win, I have no problem with it. If they are just avoiding talking to the fans, thats %^&*ed up.
 
I lot of people have rituals before games. They listen to music to relax or to get jacked up. I have nothing wrong with them preparing for a game.
I remember when I played youth basketball I used to like to jam to DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince while I warmed up in the driveway while waiting for my parents to go to the game.:lol:
 
My buddy and I have a playlist we listen to while driving to our hockey games.... always ends with 'Immigrant Song' :smile2:
 
So the extension of that logic is that the player walk should be optional.
If a player needs to be somewhere else 2.5 hours before the game in order to get into the right frame of mind, why torture the kid by making him walk through a bunch of fans?

I don't think the kid worries about how he walks into the stadium. I bet there's not 1 person on that team that doesn't mind walking through fans, but I bet there ar ea lot that would mind if they didn't have their music. I think this topic is a mountain out of a molehill.
 
it's hard to say. i teach at CU and DU, and have for 8 years as adjunct faculty. kids may feed off the visual of fans and be rocking their tunes...that's how kids/students/athletes are today.

if that gets them up, that gets them up. the walk is a Bohn move for the fans....it's 2.5 hours before they have to hit someone. that's a long time for them to be in the "cranked up space".

No doubt. In the big picture, this is a molehill.

But as a fan, I have the choice of hanging out at the tail gate with a cold beer and a brat, or I could walk across campus to cheer on my team. When players are plugged in and tuned out, I'm not 100% sure the players feed off the walk. I'm just not sure I'm supporting them by being there.

Parades are more fun when the honorees wave back.

Like I said, it was cool to see Coach Hawk, Bohn and Hypolyte interacting with the fans. They were feeding off each other. Many of the others had the look of commuters exiting a subway station on their way to work.

I sure as hell don't want a bunch of people around me on my commute to work, and I can totally understand how a player might cope with the situation by hiding behind a pair of shades and an iPod.

I don't mind... They are focused and getting pumped up with their tunes. I would say 75% of the players walk through with a big smile on their face, high-fiveing, etc... I think it's still awesome because it brings the community closer to the team.

If it comes to a point where they all listen to music and ignore the crowd, that would be a problem, but most of them don't.
 
Mentality. Music allows you to block out outside distractions and focus on what you need to do to prepare yourself for the warmups and game. Sorry that fans are an outside distraction, but that's just they way it is.

I think you just hit it. These are kids, walking through a tunnel of fans up close staring at them has to make a lot of the players a little self conscious. Being on the field is different, the fans aren't in their faces. I know a lot of adults that wouldn't handle the situation well.

The team is dropped off in Front of Libby Hall (dorm) via bus, they exit the bus and proceed a few hundred yards to the golden buffalo statue in the plaza in front on Folsom, they then head into the stadium. Fans and the band line the route. Happens about 2 hours before kickoff. Other schools like UGA do this type of thing.
 
Oh cool...yeah I figured it was something along those lines. NU does that too but I don't think we have a name for it...and it's mostly students I think...never been to one.
