the ol played horribly. that's 3 games in a row.

ku wasn't vastly physically superior to CU, except CU lost the matchup on the ol badly.

as i mentioned before the game, our Buffs do not have the depth to withstand the losses along the ol. this season is in the tank. that doesn't mean they can't get to a bowl. i still think there are 3 wins left on the schedule, but it will take some work.

folks can rail about cody (he had a terrible game) and some of the coaching (i thought mangino outcoached hawk today), but at the end of the analysis this is a very simple problem. we don't have the bodies on the ol to be competitive against decent or better teams. ballenger has more physical ability but he looked lost out there too. the ol is not getting it done at all.

dial down your expectations for this season. what has happened to CU along the line is catastrophically bad.

still, there are some wins left. kjsu is in boulder and i think the team will rally and win that one. isu and atm and the fuskers are beatable too. mizzery may be beyond the realm of possible at this point and osu looks good.

plus, dscott is banged up. jsmith is banged up. simas is ineligible. celestine quit. we don't exactly have a ton of weapons on offense right now.

i hope for a bowl team. it is still very do-able. don't panic yet.

Don't worry about that, we'll be hearing about the "rebuilding" is being pushed back to 2010 in no time.

well, i was also expecting a better year this season, but you simply cannot reasonably expect success given what has occurred.

it is a step back. life isn't fair. i hope the staff can still recruit lights out because they are going to need more bodies in here.

if our Buffs are still rebuilding or a year away next year when they get all these guys back (presumably) then maybe you have a beef. but, great coaching wouldn't have fixed what ails us this year. the pipeline isn't full yet, the depth isn't there yet. you get hit with this many player losses and it is all over. we needed to get lucky this year. we didn't. hope that they gut it out and find a way to win 3 more.

Next year, we'll get'em. The team is still young. There are injuries ( like no one other team has them), and we are rebuilding. I'm phucking tired of excuses but what choice do we have. I will always be a CU Fan, so I guess we get use to pain and misery. We'll understand the Baylor fanbase better now.

Mangino coached a very good game. I don't think anyone got out coached though. JMO.

Nobody got outcoached. Our QB is fine. Our playcalling is great. Our receivers are ok. Frankly, it's hard to imagine how we aren't undefeated right now... Once all our greatness gets together and starts executing, look out!!!

That's exactly what i've been saying.

Don't forget our special teams. We're damn exciting in that phase too. Either we get a fifty yard return or a near fumble.

I cant believe we didnt beat the team that beat the #1 team in the nation. Did I get enough "beats" in there?

You are right, of course. But the coaches still need to get the best players on the field with a gameplan that puts them in the best position to win, and have them prepared to execute that gameplan. I'm not 100% convinced we're seeing that at this point. Obviously, the coaches want to play the best players. Scott and Smith have been banged up, and Speedy has clearly performed and taken lots of Scott's PT in the process. I don't buy into the drama surrounding those two. But I do have to wonder, given how truly horrible Cody has been the last 3 games (and getting worse week after week) if the staff doesn't have a blind spot based on his intangibles, his leadership, the youth behind him, and maybe just a little bit his last name. The status quo is clearly unacceptable at that position. If Cody is the best we have, we need to recruit better.

Anyone who thinks CU is going to beat KSU (lol) with this pathetic excuse for an offense is sticking their head in the sand.

Without drastic, immediate change CU is going to get steamrolled by Josh Freeman & co. They WILL score a lot of points because they have an excellent, talented QB and a coherent offensive scheme. Can you say the same for CU? No. You can't.

CU needs to beat ISU and A&M + pull of an upset (we won't be favored in any other games and frankly I doubt we will be favored vs. A&M) to make a bowl game.

What about this team makes you think we are going to win even 3 more games? We have looked mediocre to downright bad all year.

Schedule:

KSU - If you think CU is going to easily win this game you are wrong. They are better than us. Their offense can score. Their defense sucks. The game is in boulder so we have a good chance to win but to think that this is an automatic win is wrong. KSU is a superior football team to CU...

Missouri - lol

A&M - We should be favored in this game. We have to win or we will be headed directly to the cellar of the big12. It's on the road in a big schedule against a talented team but they are absolutely horribly coached and demoralized from a horrible year.

ISU - At home. We should win. They have given us trouble recently but they are not a good team.

OSU - Blowout loss.

Nebraska - Tossup. The contest is between who is a worse team? Both of our programs are down right now...

5.5 wins this year.

you kids need prozac.

CU is not an elite team. we are not reloading. we are trying to rebuild. when you lose all these key guys and you don't have guys to replace them... and, you already have a super-young team... and, you are playing a brutal schedule... guess what happens? you lose. badly. your team doesn't look very good. do you really think a different staff with the same set of players and circumstances would do better?

it is very disappointing, but it is where the program is. maybe that analogy to when marolt gave Mac the extension in the midst of a dreadful 1-10 season is closer to the truth than i wanted to believe.

Let me guess, when we lose most of our d-line and both safeties next year, we're going to hear about how young we are on defense... right? You play with what you have. As Junc said above, if you think the staff is putting this team in the best position to win, good for you. But plenty of us are watching a coaching staff that isn't overcoming any gaps in talent.

This team makes stupid mistakes week in and week out. That doesn't seem to be changing as the weeks progress. Sorry, but the moral victories don't cut it. Either we're good or we're not. Right now, we're clearly the latter.

How about starting with playing the players that give you the best chance to win? Maybe when you recruit the MOST talented offensive player in the nation, outside of TP, he should get more than 1 damn carry per game? Maybe when your QB is incompetent, at best, you should try using a different one?

i didn't say we were good. i didn't claim any moral victory. i said that i don't think coaching can fix what ails us. sure, there are plenty of head-scratchers with the staff. there always are. go read a 'bama board or usc board or lsu board or ut board. there will be plenty of fans on any of those sites who are down on the staff for a variety of reasons and those teams are actually good.

it was only a brief appearance but bally didn't jump out at me as "THE ANSWER" today. maybe the staff realizes that, as limited as cody is physically, he is still the best chance to win right now. yet, we are going to spend the next week reading on these boards that the staff doesn't know what it is doing if they don't demote cody. we don't know how they practice.

the staff has made lots of errors. here's a newsflash. Mac and his staff made a lot of boneheaded errors too, particularly early in their tenure.

college football success starts and ends with recruiting. we don't have enough bodies yet and the ones we've have are too young and/or unavailable. knute rockne couldn't fix this.

it is the breaks of the game. some staffs get lucky when they need to and some don't.

Very disappointed with our coaching staff. Poor decisions all over the place. Maybe a buy out in after 2009 is in order, Shieet, I think Bzdelik will win a division or even Conference championship before Hawk will.

Good luck recruiting WRs to play in this offense. If you think WRs are lining up to play with this offense, you're going to be seriously disappointed. It is already an issue, and it won't get any better.

Ballenger looked average today, but he was also put in late in the game when the defense could just attack him. Plus he didn't get many reps in practice this week. I don't have a problem with coaches playing Cody, but stop with the BS about wanting to get Ballenger some playing time if you're not serious about it.

This is all leading back to the complaint I've had for quite a while now. We have no identity on offense. None. At all. When you're a young team, or when you're matched up against a more talented team, or when you've had a run of injuries that leaves you younger or more overmatched, you generally revert to what you do best. Your bread and butter. What is that for this team, exactly? Apparently, the staff feels it's the passing game, since that's what we keep going to. If that is going to be our bread and butter, we need to be able to do better than 8 for 22 passing from our starting quarterback. If we're a passing team, we shouldn't go three weeks at a time with abysmal QB performances. A run like that is a good indication you are not a bread and butter passing team.

Personally, I would like to see us with a bread and butter power running game. The ability to get in and grind it out so that you don't end up punting after having second and 2. The kind of running game Darrell Scott was made for. But that isn't our scheme - not running out of the shotgun a big % of the time and not being able to open holes in the interior line game after game. Sure, the OL injuries are a big part of that, but there isn't a scheme that young linemen should be able to adapt to quicker than power running. When we do run, it's a lot more misdirection and draw blocking. Again, we're ok at that, but not great. And not consistent.

Sometimes it feels like this offense is a grab bag of plays put together. No cohesive plan, no identity. Last year it seemed like half the game plan was put together in a coaches meeting where each coach was trying to "out clever" the rest of the guys in the room. Now even that kind of stuff is gone. We're just running a bunch of vanilla plays, seemingly randomly. Give this team an identity and the QB might look a lot less confused and panicky. Give this team an identity and your subs and young players might be able to step in and contribute a lot more quickly. Give this team an identity and your best players for that system might just work their way to the top more often. Give this team an identity and your players just might be able to cut out mistakes and execute a little more consistently. Instead, we have an offense that is ok, but not great, at a lot of things and at a lot of positions...

they are going to need to out-recruit their on-the-field efforts this season, again. if they cannot do that, this staff will not succeed here. they said they wanted ballly to get some reps. he got some reps. so, i guess it wasn't bs about them wanting him to get some time. he did.

the dscott thing is mystifying to a degree, but they say he is banged up. we don't know how badly. there must be a reason he isn't getting touches. and, i am pretty sure the reason is not "because the staff are idiots and don't realize that a 5 star rb might help them win." and smith was banged up too.

a physically limited team is going to make any staff look bad. a gifted one can hide a lot of coaching mistakes.

in hindsight, i would say that CU missing on that qb who went to ou (landry jones) may have been the worst thing that has happened thus far to this staff. you have to have an elite qb to win consistently with this schedule. i don't think we have an elite qb on the roster, but time will tell i guess.

Great post. I agree with everything. I don't understand why the offensive coaches seem to be forcing the passing game, but they are.

There was a play call in the second quarter that typified this trend. We were near midfield and had a good drive going. We were up 7-0. We ran it on first and second down to set up a third and two. A perfect time for power running with Scott, right? Well, instead we put Cody in the shotgun and he throws a pass that is tipped and falls incomplete. We are forced to punt and basically the game is all downhill from there.

Thanks for bringing some sanity to this discussion. The Buffs were underdogs the last three games, and they lived up to that expectation. Many of you guys need to chill. The Buffs are young and the OL has been decimated. No rationale person would expect anything better than 3-3.

Yes, it is frustrating to experience some of the lame play calls, pathetic QB play, and questionable use of our better players. But this is part of the drill to get us back on the map. So all of you please shut the hell up.

We're going to be great on offense once we get those offensive linemen healthy. Can't wait!

Good point. This staff will need to recruit their asses off until February. In fact, I would be in favor of signing a full 24-man class this year. We need a major talent infusion.
