CU hired a hc that it could get relatively cheap. it couldn't afford a big name. hawkins was a bargain compared to what a butch davis would have cost.
and, CU doesn't have the $$ to pay assistants enough to attract and keep the good ones. you've heard about the multi-year contract thing.
the elite football programs, when they are struggling, bring in coordinators at top dollar... chizik at ut for 900k for example. or norm chow at ucla at north of 500k... or the coordinator at 'bama...
CU, on the other hand, must groom guys and hope they pan out. the learning curve for this staff has been very steep. they struggled moving from the wac to the b12. they are struggling with the playcalling and the fact that every single team they will play in conference is good enough to beat you.
but, they are hopefully learning and they are good recruiters.
here's the punchline of the cold, hard truth: if you fired this staff AFTER we have now invested almost 3 seasons in their on the job learning, you are going to replace them with a LESS experienced staff. and, you'll be starting over again. i'd love to get a "real" coordinator in here, but i am skeptical that CU is going to pay the top dollar required to do it.
dem dere are da facts. deal with it.
