Although playing in the WAC might be the equivalent of playing intramurals, brother … Dan Hawkins has gone 12-20 in his two-and-a-half years at Colorado, but he has his team in the hunt for a bowl game. Just getting by isn’t exactly what Buff fans had in mind after the weird but successful Gary Barnett era … what happened? Hawkins seems to be the perfect fit for Boulder, he’s sort of an out-of-the-box coach at an out-of-the-box school, and he has earned his stripes after years of success at Boise State. But his offense is dead last in the Big 12 by a long shot, the team has scored 14 points in each of the last three games, and the defense is fine, but nothing special. That means either Boise State really was pretty good and had better talent than everyone assumed, or Hawkins is about a year away from being on a Dennis Franchione-like hot seat.

link don't work.

That one works. If Hawk doesn't do anything next year, I'd imagine there will be some rumblings. I'm still on the Hawk bandwaggon tho...

I'm not too worried on that front....Hawk and the team will get things done next year, just like they'll work past the injury adversity and make a bowl this year....

Hawk has 5 years like it or not, at the end of those 5 if we aren't back consistently in the top-25 its going to get nasty. One thing that link doesnt take into account is the 2-10 year, I think its tough to hold any coach responsible for thier fist year playing with guy recruited for other systems. Even HPC had a rough first year at U$C.

no that 10-10 is something to crow about.

I think a rough end to this season, and a seemingly slow recruiting class there may be some at the end of this season... If recruiting would pick up it would make life easier.

Agree with you on both those points. There will be a lot of pronosticators on how well DH will succeed in the BIg XII if the win columns dont get bigger and the recruits (good ones that other Big XII, Pac 10 schools also want) dont start coming.

On the CUBUFFS.com, Hawk's tuesday press conference had someone ask about how many wins would be deemed a good season...

Well, hawk said that he would gage that by how the players are doing, are they sticking together, improving, etc....

He said he knows that media and fans judge you by wins and losses but being a father, and head coach of a football team there's more to it than that.

I like hawk, I think he's brought fans, team, community together but...

He is mainly here to WIN football games. It DOES matter if you win or lose. It DOES matter if CU goes to a bowl game.

This attitude is taught to the players and I think it's BS.

If Hawk makes a bowl this year and doesn't get blown out in that bowl game he won't have to worry about talk of him being on the hot seat. In 09 he simply has to have more wins than losses to prevent the hot seat talk from starting. By 2010 he needs to experience the top 25 from time to time or it may be time to look in a different direction.

I really think he is on the right path. The key is to stop being in the situation where we are playing true freshmen and redshirt freshmen. Sophomore starters also need to be a rarity. Field a consistant team of Junior and Senior starters and you hit the gold mine.

IMO you give a coach five years. So far, I give Hawk a B-. He has had some nice W's, (OU in '07, back to back over TT, WVU, hasn't lost to the goat herders, recruiting upgrade) but there have been some pretty big negative (Montana St., frickin' Baylor '06, 2-10, 1-5 v. Kansas schools).

I do see things beginning to gel, and that the program is on the upswing and things should get better as the starters get more seasoned....

Yes he has. The goats were his second game after the MT St. debacle, and we lost by 4 points.

I'm sorry, but this thread SUCKS! I mean, what the hell? We've got the third youngest team in the NCAA playing one of the top five toughest schedules! Couple that with a decimated offensive line, what the hell do some of you guys expect?

Amen Brotha.

Hmmm. Your freakin right DBT. The toughest conference in the nation, the
3rd toughest schedule, youth, and injuries oh and underclassmen at the QB position and we expect instant success.

I'll be happy with 6 wins this year with a bowl win gives us 7. The D is really doing well, and as long as they continue to get better we should win at least 2 games for a bowl. With the D improving and perhaps the offense getting better (it can only go up from here) we may be able to win up to 4 more games (with a bowl). That, in my eyes would be a very successful season considering the facts you mentioned above.

I agree with DBT, this thread sucks...too premature..I will say to Buffwings point, if players like Kasa end up going out of state which sources are saying he might, we would need to recruit a lot of out of state talent to make up for those home grown losses. This years recruiting class won't be an indicator of success since we are not graduating a ton of seniors. Next year and the year after will be a good barometer of the teams future, both on the field and with recruits.

Given the contract he recently signed, I don't think winning matters as much to CU as it once did.

Wait wait wait.....'back' in the top 25? lolz ;)

To be honest, that contract was probably more about running a relatively scandal-free program rather than winning. And after that hell at the end of Barnett's tenure, could you really blame them?

But, as we've already seen twice this season, contracts hardly ever reach the end of their terms for college football coaches.

I believe it does. Football is the revenue sport at CU, and revenue follows victories. AD Bohn knows this. He's being admirably patient, in my opinion.

Why did Pinkel suck and then suddenly start winning? Same with Mangino. Consistency (with the right coach) breeds success.

CU boasts a finer football tradition (in the modern era, which we'll define as the last forty years) than both those schools, and in my opinion, Boulder sells itself as a town and a community. Though Colorado can't compete with Mizzou for quality of instate recruits, it can with Kansas. Boulder makes a quality destination for solid players from everywhere but the Southeast (where they seem to appreciate Boulder less--Kordell Stewart aside).

I believe that the contract extension demonstrates the administration's devotion to a winning program.

Tell me people, who the hell could CU possibly bring in that would do better? If we get a coaching change within the next five years, CU football will be at the bottom of the Big 12 (I'm talking ISU and Baylor type) for a looooong time. We just don't have the money and then main thing, THE SUPPORT FROM FANS AND MEDIA!!! Funny I would like to see what kind of support the people that are complaining actually put into the program.

This year? We're trying....almost had 2 now.

I'm talking history :p

And Hawk is a decent coach. Give it some time it's only been two seasons boys.

I believe that Abs was referencing history too--recent history. As you're well aware, nebraska and Duke are the only two BCS conference teams that haven't beaten a top 20 team since 2001. That's a pretty long stretch for a team with such history...

Concur with your assessment on Hawk.

.

That is an amazing statistic. :boxing:

Why do the niblets have anything to say anymore to anyone?

You have a source for that stat? I would love to rub it into soem friends faces.

Certainly the brass at CU would like their football team to win a lot of games. But I don't think it is the "requirement" today that it was 10-15 years ago.
