Unexpected Road Trip

Well, my kid and his buddy just scored tickets to the game. They are heading out in a few minutes. I'm a little worried about two kids hitting the road this late, so send out some prayers.

They will be fine. Just make sure they don't speed. Nebraska Highway Patrol are real strict and love to ticket us Greenies.

The grass around the "welcome to Nebraska" sign at the border needs to be watered.

prayers sent.

having gone back and forth between omaha and denver for years, i can tell you that night improves the scenery as you head east past northern colorado..

Did they make it?

Nope. Turns out, they only had one ticket. They were going to try to buy another at that game. So, they went to the other kid's house and the plan was to sleep 'til 1:30. When the alarm went off, they were too tired and thought better of going on a whim with the "hope" of scoring another ticket. Dumbasses. I have to say, I'm glad. I think these things require just a tad more planning. But thats just me. But, hey, I would have let him do it if he wanted to. I'm not exactly Mr. Overprotective, am I?

No not at all. Your right, it's probably best the didn't go.

i am in disagreement. it is easy to get tix outside a stadium. they are not exactly going to be given away, but if it is important to ya, you can go.

the drive is nothing. with two people, they could drive shifts and make it.

if you aren't going to road trip in college, when do you propose to do it?

I don't see anything wrong with taking a road trip. I just agree with the old man, a little more planning would have better suited them. To go on a whim sometimes leads to a bad time. Maybe they wouldn't be able to find a hotel...ect. Which you could argue that is part of the adventure and fun, or it could potentially be a disaster.

It's college. There's someone out there who might be willing to offer a couch or better.

the hotel would be more of a serious concern 10-12 years ago. four seconds on expedia, and i have 46 hotels listed in the vicinity, starting at $58. one of those kids is bound to have an iphone, and if they don't, they know to call their friends to scope it out and canvas expedia for them.

kids are resourceful buggers.

as for planning, not much is required to hit the atm and point the vehicle on I-76. it turns right into I-80. it is impossible to miss the university of nebraska exit. from there, it is impossible to miss the stadium. the bigassed concrete highway bridge borders it on the west.

they MAY find it helpful to have a gps to get them to the hotel. my phone has gps capability if i choose to use it.

technology and instant communication has taken the need to plan out trips months in advance.

Good point. I guess I did take a spur of the moment road trip to Blacksburg, VA in college. We decided to go at 9 pm the night before we left. That was a lot of fun because before that I had never been East of Lincoln, NE.

Gawd Darn It! So I'm wrong. You are absolutely right. The internet, gps, technology in general has made life too damn easy these days. Back when DBT took road trips they where actually called trail trips and they either took the stage or drove a wagon themselves, and in that case there was a lot more planning required and likelihood for something to go wrong. Its no fun to have a wagon wheel break on you in the middle of nowhere.

It's a good thing he didn't die of cholera and successfully forded the river. Too bad his oxen died though.

we have spare wheels these days in the trunk of a car. they may not be a waggon wheel, but they still work. it is so easy to fix, even iq deficient hawt chicks in "Beauty and the Geek" managed to change them.

if a cash flow problem crops up, mom and dad can send a moneygram. wally world is open 24/7. they can then wait for the prodigal child to return home and payback the loan plus interest playing handyman and maid.

if the prodigal child earns their way into jail, its time to laugh and chalk that up to a life lesson.

Crossing rivers was always tricky.

Actually the other kid's mom has a good friend in Lincoln. They probably would have stayed there. I just think that when they woke up to the alarm at 1:30 AM, they realized how tired they were and said, "**** this!"

Now, if they'd come up with this earlier in the day, then they may have gone for it. But, they have at least three more years at CU. So maybe they can do it in '10.

every reason to just et the driving out of the way first. i'm sure they will make it in the future.

Hopefully he is a Banker from Boston and can buy more oxen. However, Dysentery can make a road trip tough.

I say well done to the DBT offspring. Some of my best memories of college were roadtrips. Tell him when in doubt, find a sorority house to stay at.
