The smirk

Anyone catch the shot of Hawkins' smirk after Henry (spelled properly) made that field goal? Even for a zen guy, that's an absolutely unbelievable reaction in that kind of situation... though I kind of liked it (didn't care much for the ineffectual look he seemed to exude for the rest of the game, though).

Thoughts?

what can you say or do? The guy hits a career kick with time running out to win the game. You have to smile for the guy. I am speechless right now about the game but I thought Buffs played with heart and had a lot of injuries to overcome. Our D played well, and our O Line, as depleted as it was, did a good job too. We just weren't going to win today...

I don't think many coaches would have that reaction though. I mean, could you imagine if that happened to the broncos? Shanahan's head would explode

I guess the coaches and players should go into hiding after losing. If anyone sees them enjoy themselves or joking around, their commitment to the team should be automatically questioned.

He should have flipped out and started crying. No reason to keep any sort of cool with so much time left on the clock.

I think he should have yelled "You Lucky SOB'S!" :smile2:

I think he smirked because he couldn't believe he made it and at our bad luck.

non-issue

Hawkins was probably thinking about what the offense needed to do to win the game, but maybe he should have lost his cool and showed his young team how to fall apart when it counts.

As for shanahan, if he's lost it more than once or twice in 14 seasons as head coach, I'd be surprised. Good coaches don't throw tantrums when the other team hits a field goal.

Like I said, I liked the reaction he had, I just thought it was very unusual. Most coaches in that situation would either A: Put their hands behind their head and try to touch their knees with their forehead, or B: Have all the blood rush out of their face, then stare off into oblivion for the next half hour or so.

Not Hawk though... he smiled. It wasn't a pained grimace, or a nervous reaction to anguish, it just looked like an earnest smile. Sort of like when the good guy in a movie smiles at the bad guy right before shooting him, except in this case the bad guy ended up catching the bullet and running it back for 6.

Regardless, I thought it was worth noting. Guess that was just me, though. :smile2:

I didn't think it was a smirk, as much as a wry smile..such as "you got to be kidding me".

Actually the Henery kid does have a good leg, and good accuracy. I think he was a national kicker of week once this season for making 4 field goals in a game, all beyond 45-46 yards or something.

Still, given the situation, the distance, it was a low percentage kick. The Huskers have to be feeling they escaped an upset.

I think it was better than him saying the F word on National TV and being called classless. There's nothing else he could have done in that situation. :smile2:

So Dan Hawkins isn't Ahab crazy. No big deal. This was a NU record FG kick and he was there "soaking it in" witnessing history.

I doubt he'd have had the same reaction if it were a 20 yard chip shot.

all save for spider, who thinks we were brought to the woodshed, to see his post in another thread.

i would guess hawkins smiled because how can you be truly upset seeing a kick like that? it was unbelieveable.

He kicked 4 from 44 yards against W. Michigan. Don't chalk that kick up to just plain old "luck". Henery is an above average Collegiate kicker, and reportedly kicks 60 yard field goals in practice quite regularly. Although his range is supposedly 52 and in. He was a Freshman First Team All Big-12 from the Sporting News. If you know anything about college soccer, Henery also held a scholarship offer from Creighton University in Omaha. Come on, were all of MC's kicks over 50 yards luck?? Didn't think so.

Once in a lifetime kick, but the kid made it and you won. As far as Mason goes, when your kid leads the NFL in scoring then you can make comparisons.

When Mason Crosby hit a 50+, it was all skill.

Henery got the call and did his job. Game Over.

Funny, didn't know that Henery was kicking in the NFL. Could have sworn he was just a Sophomore in college. I'd say Henery has skills as well. Figured on these types of responses.

Typical fusker to compare some soph who got lucky to one of the greatest kickers in the history of the NCAA

Malph, I noticed the smirk as well. That was between my cursing and yelling :smile2: I liked it as well. When a kid goes out with the game on the line and hits that kind of shot, what can a coach do. Smile and know he did his job. Tough way to go out on such a hard fought game. Props to the kid for hitting it. That was an all brass shot!

Now we get healthy and get better in the spring! I wish we would be playing in Dec but I am really upbeat about next year. The team left it on the field and I believe will be a force in the conference next year. Time will tell, but the foundation Hawk has put in place will start to pay next year, assuming the injury bug is passed off to someone else. Next year this team will be more capable of handling the normal number of injuries any team will see during a season. We were snakebit this year and did not have the depth to deal with it. Next year will be a different story.

Fuskers, enjoy the year of bragging rites. We will get them back in our house next year!

Go Buffs!

Hard to call Henery's kick all luck...it takes skill and strength to get the ball close on that type of kick, a little luck that there wasn't any wind is something that effects all kicks. Props to that kicker. He is good.

You see it at the end of this:

I think it was just a smirk of complete disbelief. I had the same look on my face after our wonderful fake FG.

Too funny, but watch the guy behind Hawk with his hands on his mouth. Do we have stunned Buff now?

I remember going to a Broncos vs Dallas Cowboy game back in the Tom Landry era. The Broncos worked Dallas. I was a huge Cowboy fan at that time. I can't remember if it was pre-season or regular. But I'll never forget how calm Tom stayed even at the worst of times. That is what I want in a coach. That being said, I would have liked to have seen Hawk "go off" on plays like where DS got interfered with and didn't get the call. I think that, with officiating, you need to get in their ear at times. But, for the most part, I want a calm coach on the sideline.

I think it was Hawk's way of being surprised and showing a little bit of respect for what Henery had just done at the same time. It was a hell of a kick and you have to have your balls screwed on tight for that one. That's an NFL type of kick and if he keeps kicking FG's like that he'll find himself there one day. I didn't think there was anyway he was going to make that one. I wanted to reach through the TV and choke the $hit out of Ganz for taking that 15 yard loss on the sack. That was a huge defensive play and a bonehead decision by Ganz. Throw that $hit away Joey......................

Credit where credit's due. The ****er made the kick, and deserves the credit. Luck doesn't play much of a role in a 57 yarder, unless there's a monster tailwind.

To me, Coach Hawk's look said, "Well, that just about sums up the season. Okay, guys let's go rally to win this game..."

Anybody who loves the game of football would have had a similar reaction. Our boys played their guts out and so did NU. It was a clean, hard-hitting game for opponents and coaches who obviously respect both the other team and the game. I commented several times to my boys that the game was played like "it used to be played." I would have liked a different result but I see this game as the start of a new era of competence and excellence for both programs. Believe me, it is a lot more fun on the Friday after Thanksgiving to have both programs playing well and with heart.

MY PREDICTION: CU/NU 2009 = Winner goes to the B12 Championship = Order Restored
