Neb-CSU?

I didn't really think that this fit in any other thread, so I decided to start a new one to satisfy my need to get my opinion out there.

To anyone else, did this year's NU game feel like the CSU game from 2006? Clearly in 06 we weren't ready to compete with anybody (BJAX was the starting QB... BJAX!!!) BUT we made a strong showing against the lammies and took it to the wire and lost 14-10. Of course all the CSU fans paraded around the street and rubbed it in all of our faces all season long but there was this overwhelming feeling that I got from them of "We better enjoy this now" because they realized that the storm clouds were coming and we were ready to take it to them for the foreseeable future each and every year.

This year, limping into the Nebraska game in Lincoln, no one outside of the biggest sunshine pumpers thought we'd be competitive, much less win. Hell, I pride myself on being one of the biggest sunshine pumpers out there and I didn't think that we'd win. Then, we came out to play and were leading with 1:50 to go and their kicker needing to make a 57 yd fg.

Now, I'm not saying that our series with NU is about to become one-sided, but I kind of think that some of the NU fans are realizing that they're going to be in for a much tougher fight from us in the years to come. They had key contributions from a LOT of players that they are likely to lose next year (with the exception of Helu) such as Ganz, Swift, Peterson, Steinkuhler, and a couple of other starters on defense including possbly Suh. We were starting only 2 players from our projected offensive line entering the season, two of the backups were playing hurt, we were down to our projected 3rd string RB, our top wideout was playing on 2 seperated shoulders, Geer was playing hurt, we were missing our starting safeties, etc, and we came out and kept it very, very close.

Anybody else feel the same way?

No.

For the last decade, we have played NU tough. Last Friday just continued that trend.

and NU fans don't see the storm brewing in Boulder....they see their own "Pelinicane" blowing into Lincoln and think that CU is just going to be another ISU...

I think NU does need to be worried. I don't know if they lose any Olinemen, but QB's as productive as Ganz are rarely replaced with nary a lost step...

He was gem for them, and he will soon be gone. Reversion to the mean for their offense is probable. CU has no where to go but up on every single side of the ball....

The varied posts about the holes that the recruiting classes of 04-06 left for CU have really driven home to me how bad things were. Hawk is a champ for pulling this team through it. The thing is, we have one more year after the comign one before the "scandal" is gone. CU basically got a near death sentence from Hnida and Co...

Looking forward to next year. It will still be frustrating, but damn it should be a lot more fun! This was the worst year, talent/depth wise, that CU should see for a long long time.

Disagree. We have some young talent at QB (Just signed Cody Green 4* running a 4.6 40 ranked 10th in the nation), we also already have an amazing pocket passer (arm cannon) in Patrick Witt...only a sophmore. Witt is going head to head with Zac Lee (JuCo transfer from SanFran and played with Maurice Purify in which he was injured half the season and still threw for 3,400 yards and 64% completion. We have awesome talent at Iback with Castille and Helu (I'm sure you know, he ran on you for 166yds on Friday and averages over 6 yards a carry).

But yes....our O-Line worries me. I'm happy and hoping Pelini can get it done in years to come. 8-4 and a Bowl Birth is pretty damned good compared to last year and a first year coach.

I'll take it.

I can just imagine, after this season they're already playing in the BCS title game next year. Just don't tell them to look at Charlie Weis and ND over the last 5 years...

I don't care how highly touted your QB's are. Throw in Oline issues and young WR's and you do not have a recipe for quick success. On average most QB's will not be as good as Ganz...

In what way? I've never heard anyone mention a NC in the near future. Give me a break...I'm just saying it's looking good. At least we got a winning season *cough* *cough*

And on average most wont be as ****ty as Hawkins. Get off your soap box.

hahaha. **** you. I wasn't comparing the programs you husker, OR standing on a soap box. Just saying you guys are gonna lose a step. And if you will remember, little Hawk was one lucky as all hell tipped pass away from leading the buffs down the field for the winning points.

Do you really think your QB's are just going to automatically step in and replace Ganz's production with little to no drop off? If so, I got some property in Nebraska to sell ya... Great, non obstructed view of corn!

 sheesh, your sensitivity makes my point for me.

Everyone said the same garbage about Ganz when he was taking over for Keller. After watching video of Witt and Lee (Mostly Witt). I'm really not all that concerned at the QB posistion.

But yes, O-Line is looking Grim....going to be some Frosh in there for sure.

Keller was not all that great. Ganz, well, that is a top 10 offense that he led.

yup, a lot of people were wrong about Ganz. He is what is called an EXCEPTION.

So, you are not concerned because you had ONE exception, therefore another one is almost certain, so your QB play will stay excellent... right. excellent logic.

Notice I didn't say your QB play would suck, but that it almost certainly would go down towards the median. and it probably will. but no, it will be amazing or nearly as good because you guys got lucky with ganz...

the N is for NOWLEDGE .

Ganz was Medium - Good. He was not excellent. Made some stupid mistakes that cost us games....but he was a good fit for the program. There were better QB's in the Big 12 all around...McCoy, Sammy, Reesing, Boogereater, Harrell(sp?)

...NU fans .... think that CU is just going to be another ISU...

This NU fan doesn't know what CU is going to be. But he does know that Coach Hawkins is destined to be a standout, even great head coach. Just *where* he becomes that is the question.

But CU's imagined ISU-like destiny seems far-fetched. I don't know where you got that from.

Whenever self-proclaimed aNUs fans sing the praises of a CU football coach, it makes me queezy. After all, IMHO Clownahan was the best shucker coach Stincoln has ever seen. It's a shame they let him and Petersen go.

I don't think CU is going to go anywhere but up in the next few seasons. The fact that you had so many injuries this season meant that you got a lot of experience for your younger players. You guys are pretty set at RB and will have a good Oline as long as everyone is healthy. I gotta say after seeing Scott's videos of HS I was expecting a lot more out of him but I didn't see much this season. Call it injuries, call it inability to adjust to the speed of the game, whatever it is, he will be good. The biggest concern is your D line. If they don't find people to pressure the QB and fast, you're going to get torched by a lot of teams in this conference.
As far as NU goes, yes losing Ganz is tough because he had an arm and mobility. The top two replacements are better than he was in those respects, but each only has one of those talents. Our OLine will be fine. A lot of the young guys played a lot due to injuries and we only lose Slausen and Murtha. If you look at the progression of our running game throughout the year it shows that Cotton is a good coach. DT is an area of concern for us as well but Suh announced he's staying so that helps.
Bottom line, both teams should be better than they were this season and both should be competing for the title.

first off, I do not consider Slausen a loss. Ganz will be missed most for his brain more than arm or feet, a very heads up kid. QB Kody Spano and Green (should he sign) will be getting the most attention next year. Spano is a redshirt and was recruited for his mobility (Witt has the best head of the QB's but would not be a dual threat like the other 2)

out of 25 recruits from last years class 23 redshirted. there is another Stienkuhler and Makovica in that class. NU will be deep at LB, RB, OL.

Barry Turner got a medical redshirt, combine him with Pierre Allen at the other end and it could be the best 1-2 punch since Tomich/Winstrom. Should Suh return combined with a upcoming Steinkuhler and the Dline has the making of a troo troo beast..... and they will be deep beyond that.

This staff has shown me they can develop talent.... next year looks very good but a QB must emerge from the pack, the first couple weeks could be a struggle.

wow 23 of 25 redshirted?

I know you want most of your guys to RS, but its not like NU was all that amazing so that it didn't need some talent upgrade from the new recruits... Are you guys worried that the class was more heralded then talented?

Otoh, that was Pelini's first class and not only didn't he have any time to put it together, but he didn't even really pick most of those recruits! So if it is not a huge class contribution wise I don't think NU fans should hold it against him... However, you definitely should hope that Cally's highly touted recruits really start to deliver next year or you could be in for some tough times.

No, Pelini was up front about wanting to redshirt as many as possible. Had he not felt the team could have achieved a reasonable season, he probably would have played more. Once they beat Kansas, with almost no LB's, the staff felt pretty secure in the end result, except the end destination is better than expected.

O-line will be fine. Slauson is no major loss, Murtha was hut more often than not and they played lots of young guys on the line.

As long as you don't send your injury bug our way, they should be better across the board next year. Linebacker and Safety especially.

Forgot to add. They actually were able to redshirt 57 guys this year including some pretty viable walk ons. Those are pretty good numbers.

redshirting walkons? come on dude.

If you had any, you would appreciate it. Doesn't matter who you are, if yoou aren't gonna be gone in 4 years, you may as well take the 'shirt if you aren't playing.

Heck, that's how our linemen of days gone by were developed.
