Watson leaving NU for New Mexico?

New Mexico has interviewed Shawn Watson of NU to be the head coach. I think that would be ugly for NU. He has done a nice job. They will be starting a new QB next year, along with several new linemen, new receivers, etc.

Next year, they will improve on Defense again, no doubt. But they will have some struggles on offense if they don't get the right OC...

I really like Watson and hope he gets an opportunity somewhere, but I think there are better candidates interviewing for New Mexico.

They have also interviewed Dan McCarney, who did a pretty respectable job at ISU given what he had to work with. Also, Sonny Dykes has been mentioned for this job. imo to be succesful at NM, you need to be able to efficiently recruit West Texas, namely the Odessa-Midland area. Dykes dad Spike was the coach at Tech for many years, and I bet he could buy a lot of credibility with coaches out there based on that.

Bowling Green is another job for which Watson has been mentioned. I like that fit a little better for him.

I say keep the booger in Lincoln for as long as possible.

I have to agree. Pellini could hire someone that causes us more pain. On the other hand the unknown potential of Shawn Watson could get unleashed on us.

McCarney's Gator defense played pretty good and he's listed as Asst HC. I don't think he's ready for another trip to a school with a small budget. He puts a couple of more strong Gator D's on the field and he'll get a better job somewhere else.

Dan McCarney is the UF DC? I did not know that. Good for him. Sounds like he landed on his feet pretty well after ISU.

I guess he got a gig at South Florida and than Urban Meyer called him. His D played well against Alabama. Besides the color, I see a lot of parallels between Bama and OU. Gonna be a good mNC game.

I'm pretty sure he is just keeping his name out there so when a big time job comes up he is not an unknown. Could be wrong, but I can't imagine a guy leaves a cherry position for certain failure.

I doubt he leaves................

He'll leave in a heartbeat. kNU isn't the plum job it might have been 12-15 years ago.

Wow. 12-15 years. What a long time being insignificant.

Although not that surprising once they eliminated prop 48 kids and reduced the number of schollies and coaches on staff.

NM is not a certain failure, they have been to a bowl game 5 times in the past 7 yrs. It is probably the best job in the MWC behind Utah, BYU, and TCU. They can recruit West Texas effectively with a coach that knows how, and Francione won 9 games there one season.

Coordinators generally don't get major HC positions, guys like Pelini and Sarkisian are exceptions. This is a good job for a guy like Watson, and he has wanted to be a HC for a long time.

Don't fool yourself into thinking Lincoln is so great that it would diminish a young ambitious coach's desire for upward career mobility. If he gets the offer, he's a Lobo.

The weather is nicer in Albuquerque. Other than that, I don't see much difference between the two towns. Even so, UNM is not a "dead-end" job. There's adequate talent in the area to field a respectable MWC team. And, like in stincoln, they're the only game in town. Not a lot of competition from the pros or other colleges. I suppose UTEP and NMSU are their only real competition, and they're a ways away.

The argument is just for fun anyway. As I mentioned in another thread, the Illinois OC is taking the job.

LOL, really? You said that? Talk about pot meet kettle.

You don't find being a sacrificial lamb in the CCG significant?:smile2:

OTOH, CU has a conference championship in about half the span being referred to here.....

How many B12 Conference Championships does NU have? And how many does CU have? And what years where they?

Or are you bragging that CUs came a whole 2 years after NUs?

Not to mention it doesn't get much more sacrificial than 70-3

Good grief...you don't get self-deprecating humor do you?

Maybe I should have stuck with a potty joke.....

It may not be, but he's not going to leave NU for a head coaching job at NMSU. Now, if a bigger job came up I could see him leaving. IMO he's just trying to make some connections just in case. If he stays next season and NU does better or just as well on offense then he'll get better offers.

Amazing how such an insignificant team of the last 12-15 years played for the mNC against Miami in the Rose Bowl in 2002. What I think you mean to see is that they have not been a dominant bone crushing force in college football for the last 12-15 years. They have been pretty good up until they fired Solich. They were ranked on and off during most of that time period.

They did take a turn for the worse after that year.

He didn't interview for the NMSU job, he interviewed for the NM job.

NM is, at best, a stepping stone. I grew up a couple of blocks from the campus and the community and the student body really do not care about football. Get to a couple of bowl games and hope a bigger school picks you up. Even when coach Fran built a good team there, he couldn't fill the stadium (which isn't very big).

Regardless, this thread is moot. Albuquerque paper reporting, Locksley from Illinois will take the job.

That was apparent from the way they embraced a totally ****ty female placekicker/mascot....

Quarterback is the only spot that concerns me. As for lineman, we only lose Matt Slauson and Lydon Murtha on the offensive line. Receivers, should be quite a bit of a drop off with Swift and Peterson graduating. But, we have Menelik Holt, and Niles Paul, who have seen quite a bit of playing time the past two years. We return two very good tight ends, and most know the story at running back, with Roy Helu Jr, Quentin Castille, and Marcus Mendoza returning. On defense, we lose Zach Potter, and Ty Steinkuhler on the defensive line. At linebacker, we lose Tyler Wortman, and Cody Glenn. Wortman is probably a significant loss, but Cody Glenn only has shown flashes in moments where he has been healthy to play, or not suspended for selling his alotted tickets. In the secondary, we lose Armando Murillo, and no other starters. Asante, Thenarse, Amukamara, West, and Blue all return.
The secondary has very good young players. But, as much as I would be excited that we return 6 players on offense, and 6 players on defense...no one will ever really know how things will play out until next season. I was impressed by some of Colorado's players. Mostly Sumler. Sumler has kind of a bowling ball style of running. I think that Tyler Hansen gives you your best bet to win ball games, but since Cody is Hawk's son, I doubt you see a change, unless Cody starts throwing picks left and right (like Joe Dailey, ugh). Nebraska and Colorado should have good seasons next year. The game on November 27, I hope decides the Big 12 North. Good luck to you guys next year.
