A tale of two spread offenses...

Cal has a QB who isn't that much of a running threat. They modifiy the spread to run from the I occasionally with a great RB and decent OL.

Oregon has a QB who can run and the spread piles up the rushing yardage.

BOTH QB's can throw the ball over the middle without the passing game becoming a volleyball match.

I am not a fan of the spread, but it can work. It can even be modified for a non- running QB. I hope somebody in Boulder is watching how successful teams run this offense.

I agree - you don't NEED a running QB to run the spread effectively, but I think you need an athlete.

Both these teams have athletes at WR, who can make plays and block (important feature from this offense especially).

Both teams have offensive lines that can block. Kind of a big requirement out of any offensive scheme.....

Both QB's are athletic playmakers. One more with his feet, but both show athleticism beyond Cody. The Cal QB has a gun and the OU QB has a strong arm as well.

I watched OU last night and thought that Hansen could give us that offense. They have two solid RB's that play the Thunder & Lightning roles. That could be us. But it will require several more playmakers on the edge (Simas and 2 recruits, are you there?) and a much more solid O-Line - in my opinion.

And I don't think you will see either the spread or Power-I exclusively. A lot of teams are lining up in both and intermingling them pretty well. That's the future and I'm expecting both next year in ample doses.

they dont play to Jan 8th, but you are correct about Bradford's arm. OU runs their own version of the spread, and Bradford did not run the ball (designed running plays with the exception of a QB sneak here and there) the biggest factor is you need 5 guys up front that can block an opposing teams 5 guys, maybe 6 if they bring an extra man....

You saw last night why it is certainly not a bad thing that we go head-to-head with Oregon in recruiting quite a bit. I would love to have their team speed.

I was referring to Oregon (OU)... But Oklahoma works. You are seeing a lot of variations on the spread, and a lot of teams lining up a variety of ways. Texas Tech is sort of one extreme, and their QB doesn't run it. Oregon last night (and before with Dixon) ran the QB a lot.

I've seen variations work well with a running QB (who can throw). Witness both teams last night (Oregon and OSU).

I've seen variations work where the QB doesn't run, but they employ about 5 WR's and create isolation matchups (Texas Tech). And everything in between.

I haven't seen a team be effective without a really good athlete at QB and a bunch of playmakers at WR. CU had neither last year, although Hansen certainly showed lots of athleticism.........

I know the spread offenses or variations of are the in thing right now. But I still miss the triple option. When it was running on all 8 cylinders it was a thing of beauty. Georgia Tech seems to be doing pretty well with the option. Going to be interesting to see if this yesterdays outdated offense has any kind of future. ;) Come on GT.

I think UBT's point was:

OU = The University of Oklahoma

U of O = The University of Oregon. Nobody from Oregon would ever say "OU".

Unless in the presence of an Oklahoma fan. Funny to watch how fast they speak up. Loved to say it when we played them. Without fail they would "correct" us.

Well I didn't watch Cal much this year, but I'm pretty certain Tedford runs the west coast offense, not any version of the spread. That being said though if you're going to run the spread without a threat of a running QB you're going to need a pretty good QB. TTech seems to find one all the time, but then you have Auburn who didn't have one. When your spread QB can't throw it all over the place, like CH can't, he must be a Oregon spread type of QB. Able to throw the short and intermediate stuff well, but most importantly able to run the ball enough to worry the defense. That's my opinion of the spread at least. And whoever said DScott in the wildcat next year, I sure hope so as well. I'm hoping Helfrich is sitting around thinking of ways to create mismatches with our plethora of RBs and TEs. If he shows up with another spread 5 WR offense with 3 walkons out there again...... :bang:

Cal runs a version ofthe spread that looks very similar to CU's. It's just that CU doesn't have a big armed QB and doesn't like running from the I.

Ole Miss took over the game v. TT by just lining up and running downhill form the I. Maybe Coach Nutt knows how to handle tricky stuff like a DL slant...
