Big 12 exposed?

Is the Big 12 really all everyone said it was? I think if the Bowl Season has taught us anything it is how pitiful Big 12 Defenses are.

Missouri needed overtime to beat an above average Northwestern. A game that many thought Mizzou would dominate with their high powered offense.

Okie State was just flat outplayed against an up and down Oregon team 42-31.

Props to Kansas, but we knew Minnesota was garbage.

Big 12's darlings Texas Tech just got thumped by a middle of the road SEC team, Ole Miss team (despite beating UF), it was a game that many predicted Tech would run up the score.

I'm curious to see how Texas fairs in the Fiesta Bowl. I'm starting to think that game will be closer than predicted.

Seeing the Big 12 disappoint in the Bowls makes me lean more and more towards Florida.

I know we are all biased towards the Big 12, but it is an interesting point.

Looking at it as objectively as possible, your thought?

I also have to add ESPN's pseudo-bowl championship challenge.

The Pac-10, we many said was down this year, has already clinched it: 5-0

Arizona def. BYU 31-21 (An nice win for UofA, no one thought they could pull off the upset)

Cal def. Miami 24-17 (Not a win to ignore and Jahvid Best has now proven to be on the the HB's to look out for in 09)

Oregon def. Oklahoma State 42-31 (Maybe the most impressive Pac-10 win as they thumped "The Man's" Cowboys)

Oregon State def. Pitt 3-0 (Yawn)

USC def. Penn State 38-24 (Showing that USC is still a power)

ESPN Bowl Cup Standings

*1. Pac-10 5-0
2. SEC 4-1 (Still have Kentucky, Bama, UF)
3. Big 12 3-2 (Still have UT and OU)
4. Big East 3-2
5. Big Ten 1-5 (Still have Ohio St)

The teams that play in bowls are not the same teams that finish the regular season. Its too hard to keep focused for the month until the bowl game, and then teams have distractions like losing coaches to other teams to contend with. I wish there was some way to limit the off time before bowls.

The Big XII has shocked me this bowl season so far. Impressive wins by two north teams (KU and *ebraskunt), but the south has looked disappointing to say the least. Look forward to see if Texas and Oklahoma are as good as we think they are.

On the other side of your argument.

Mizzouri kind of lost interest after losing the Big XII championship game, still pulled it out
KU beat a supposedly physically tough Big X team
Tech showed that they can't handle a physical offensive line, not a big surprise to anyone who watched them any over the past couple of years. TT either wins big or loses big, typical of teams built on gimmicks.
Okie state was the BigXII number 4 playing supposively the number 2 in the PAC 10.
Let Oregon play Texas and see what happens.

PAC 10, SC is clearly very talented but at the same time how has the Big 10 done in BCS games the past few years,
Arizona beat the #3 team from a mid-major conference
Cal beat a Miami team that is clearly not the Miami we say in the 90's
Oregon State beats a Pitt team that is in its first bowl in four years from the mighty Big East 3-0?
Bowl records always have to evaluated based on who is actually playing who and what are their expectations. The 5-0 from the PAC 10 is impressive but not that impressive considering.

if texass and chokelahoma win their games the b12 is still the best conf in the land. if only texass wins if gives a little more cred to sec and pac 10.

the big 10 is dooming the arument for u$c as a #1 since state penn and the rest of the b10 were in way over their heads. the pac 10 should be crying loudest for a playoff since they will continue to be guilty by association with the b10 IMHO.

One thing to remember about that one was that Randy Shannon was passing out suspensions like he was Tom Osborne trying to throw a game against Georgia Tech. At least 2 players have already left the program since this game. And the game was right across the bay from Cal's campus. I'm frankly not all that impressed by that win.

And BYU was in their third Vegas Bowl in the last 3 or 4 years. This after they spent quite a bit of time hoping to be BCS busters this year. And of all the programs in the nation, BYU might find Vegas less enjoyable than any of them. I didn't see the game, so I'm not sure if BYU really showed up well or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were a bit off...

Please.

UF will MUDHOLE OU.

The Big 12 is becoming the Pac 10 East.

UF will beat OU handily I agree, but they pretty much beat everyone in the SEC in the same fashion except Ole Miss. They are just playing that much better right now.

I also have a feeling UT stumbles against tOSU. Not that the *uckeyes are that good - I just think Texass may have some focus issues since they are still feeling sorry for themselves not getting into the Big XII Champ.

Head to Head matchup of the SEC vs. Big 12 would probably end up being even this year.

I do have to say the Pac 10 is doing well, but I really am not impressed with anyone outside of U$C. Cal and Oregon can be good on any given day but both are very beatable.

It's ironic, isn't it, that BYU would consistently gets sent to the Vegas bowl? It doesn't seem like the BYU fans would particularly like Vegas or that the Vegas visitors' bureau would be especially jazzed to have the BYU folks coming to town.

That was a 3 loss SEC team that wacked a 1 one loss B12 team.

I take OU to win the mNC. if they were not in it I would take Texass in the same game, they are the two best teams in the land. period.

Hold on a minute there Padre. I do agree with you that the B12 has had a bit of a problem with defensive play this season. But the Husker team actually played great defense against Clemson. Look at the game stats:

Clemson rushing yards: 2 net yrds (average per rush 0.2 yrds)
Clemson passing yards: 206 net yds (17-37-2)

http://www.huskers.com//pdf4/362016.pdf

Not bad defense if you ask me (damn good actually). I know Clemson is not the supper power of football. They do have a very solid team, especially on the Defensive side of the ball (their Defense is ranked nationally very high). Their Offense scored points all season long too.

The Huskers won 6 of their last 7 games, and their defensive play made the difference. Go check out the game stats as the season went along yourself if you don't believe me.

Yes the B12 needs to improve. It will happen. I see marked improvement at Nebraska. Colorado "should" show improvement next season too with the players scheduled to be on deck.

so, if the Pac 10 is best at 5-0 does that makes the seasons where the Big East goes 5-1 in bowl games played before Jan. 30 the best conference in those years?

5-0 is impressive, but these are middle tier bowls (minus the Rose). anybody really looked at the number of ranked teams Penn St or Ohio State played this year? not a lot.

The big disappointment in my book for the Big 12 is the performance of the 2 South teams so far, especially Tech. OSU was a mild disappointment but TT playing close to home in a game they supposedly weren't disappointed to be playing in.

Wasn't really surprised about the Ole Miss game. They have a bunch of future NFL guys on both sides of the trenches and the defensive front seven. Add in Jevan Sneed and you have yourself a pretty dangerous team. Give that team 30 days to dissect a "system team" full of average players (excluding Crabtree) and voila you have an Ole Miss team set to bust ass.

Don't think it's an indictment of the Big 12. Tech just played a more talented team. Shoot, they beat Florida in the swamp, went toe to toe with Alabama in Tuscaloosa and destroyed LSU in Baton Rouge. If that doesn't tell you how strong Ole Miss is, I don't know what to tell ya

I don't necessarily think the Big 12 has been exposed. The media HAS to have it's darling and it HAS to declare one conference better than the other so they have something to argue about. I still believe that, since scholarship limits came into play, except for the top few teams that are arguably head and shoulders above the rest, and the bottom feeders that just don't try, the middle 60-80 teams in D1 (I refuse to call it the FBS) are the same give or take a little bit.

As bad as CU was, the Buffs were still only a kicker and a couple of plays away from 8 or 9 wins. They were also a couple plays away from 3 or 4 wins. And you can say that about most teams.

This theory, of course, goes out the window when it comes to the Big 10, which is chronically overrated by the media and gets bent over by every other conference during bowl season.

That was a 3 loss SEC team that wacked a 1 one loss B12 team.

That was a non-BCS school that just whacked the crap out of Bama.

I'll repeat - the SEC and Big 12 are probably equal this year if lined up conference against conference.

I'm not so sure it's the Big 12 getting exposed, but OSU and Tech being exposed.

Bama simply didn't give Utah the respect they deserved. Bama didn't realize that football really IS played outside of the Southeast.

Another thing that is being lost on the Sugar Bowl is that Utah didn't win that game with smoke and mirrors. They did it by being better at blocking, tackling, passing, catching, and running the ball.
