Boston College Athletic Director warned Jeff Jagodzinski that if he interviewed for the Jets job that he would get canned from BC... He didn't lie.

BOSTON - Boston College fired Jeff Jagodzinski on Wednesday, one day after he interviewed for the New York Jets coaching job.

Athletic director Gene DeFilippo had warned Jagodzinski on Saturday that his job would be in jeopardy if he went through with the Jets interview. Jagodzinski met with the Jets on Tuesday night.

Not only their recruits, but that's a big black mark to future coaches as well. Who wants to go work somewhere that you get fired for being ambitious and want a better job?

That AD gets the Dumbass of the Year award so far.

Brilliant move. BC just lost every one of their recruits.

Good point! Not to mention, it's not like he was interviewing for another college job (which would clearly make me pissed off if Hawk wanted to do the same..) However, a chance to coach in the NFL... I just think it's different.

not only that, but where success is punished.

If the BC AD wants someone with no NFL aspirations, he is looking to hire a mediocre coach. I am available. I'll take half of what the last coach got. But my teams would suck more than his.

Doesn't BC still have to pay him? So Jagodzinski can take his time, search for another job, maybe jump to the NFL... and still get paid the whole time.

There has to be something else going on here... I would assume that Jagodzinski's prior relationship with the AD must have been tenuous at best.

Not that it justifies the decision in the slightest...

Depends on what his contract says. Maybe, maybe not.

But that's the point. There's no reason for the AD to make threats. If you want a guy to stay with you, make his buyout to go somewhere else horrendously high.

I'm seriously wondering how much input Bob Kraft has had with this whole thing (as someone had pointed out in another thread on this topic). It simply can't be coincidence.

I initially agreed with most of you, but after reading the AD's comments, I can understand his rationale..The guy had signed a five year contract and was interviewing with three years left on it. Is it unreasonable to terminate the guy for interviewing two years into his commitment to BC?

Every time a coach doesn't honor his contract, the school's fans bitch about it. This guy was just asking for loyalty as had been committed to the school.

That's what a contract is for. If you don't want people leaving before the contract is up, then put a stiff penalty in there. But firing someone for merely interviewing elsewhere? I've never heard of such a thing.

Every contract has a termination clause for both the employee and the employer. This is why they are there.

This was a chance at the NFL. Different story. If the Jets wanted to interview Hawkins, would any of us hold it against him? We might be surprised that there was interest, but I don't think any of us would advocate firing the guy, and this is after he just signed a five year extension.

no to be the materialistic weasel of the bunch... but were we in on anyone at any point in the BC recruiting class and if so can we get them

All I'm saying is I can see the AD's logic. It was a ballsy move, reminds me of when Reagan told the air traffic controllers to get their asses back to work or they would be fired, and then did it.

You would be an opportunistic weasel, not a materialistic one. And I'd love to see CU go after BC's recruits, too.

BC better hope that he finds another job otherwise they will be on the hook for his salary. I don't think you can fire him for cause unless interviewing for other jobs was spelled out in his contract.

So the distinction you draw is that it is an NFL gig? What if it was another NCAA HC job for which he interviewed?

Not sure if the AD had a choice here. Bob Kraft is a BC trustee and seems to donate quite some money to BC .... and I think you´re well aware of the problems between the Jets, Pats and Kraft.

If that's what is really going on here, then you have a bit of an Auburn Jetgate situation it appears. Appease the booster to the detriment of the program.

I do not know if that´s what´s going on here, but I think it adds an interesting angle to the story ... and it makes me wonder if the BC AD had his hands tied or not.

JetGate was surpassed by Tuberville´s actual firing IMO, btw.

According to Rivals, they have a worse recruiting class then us. They do have a 4 star DT that would be nice, but he is from NY. Doubtful he would really consider a school in the wild west.

I'd take a 4* DT from anywhere. Syko would, too.

No chance in hell that guy sticks with his commitment at this point. I bet every team on the East Coast is calling him right now. WVU, UNC, Rutgers, Penn State, Syracuse, Virginia, Pitt, VTech... you name it.

Totally ridiculous move by the AD, regardless of his motivations.

Will BC even have a coach by LOI day? Is the staff in tact or did they get the boot, too (or even worse, are they all in limbo)?

Total Cluster****.

Seriously...and here we were bitching about a stupid article by John "douchebag" Henderson as potentially affecting recruiting ....could definately be worse!

What I heard is that the AD, when he hired the guy, asked him for a gentleman's agreement that he would give them 5 years without looking for or considering another job. The coach agreed to that and now has reneged. So, he was fard.

It was written in their contract that they could not strike. If there was a clause in the BC contract that clearly stated you interview, you're fired that would be another issue.

Yeah, the issue would be how stupid would a person have to be to sign a contract with that clause in it?
