Interesting to see how Hawk is building the Buffs-
Can easily see how Barnett did crappy at recruiting his last year.

GB was in the crosshairs the last two years he was here, while his results may have been subpar, he was basically fighting the entire CU admin. Remember Bitsy, her lapdog Byyny, DiAnnabelle and every other nitwit with an agenda gunning for him?

We're lucky CU isn't a DIII program right now...

I think we can stop wth the Barnett bashing now. Yes, the program wasn't in great shape when he left but he was under a very unique set of assinine restrictions that really prevented him from doing very much his last couple recruiting classes.

Gary gave many years to CU -- most of them VERY good years.

They might try getting Harris' first name right. Couple of thots: we will be thin at TE after next year and DE now, and we're really young at OL, DE, and S. Noticed also that this list has Shields back at DE (altho I think there was talk about him being a DT/DE hybrid type player).

Agreed.

Unfortunately, we're in a situation where one of two things is going to happen: 1) We have the breakout year we all expect, win 8-10 games and go to a nice bowl, maybe even a new years bowl. In this scenario, the final nail is placed in Barnett's coffin as the destroyer of the program, with Hawk hailed as the savior.
2) We have another disappointing season of 5-7, 6-7 or 7-6. In this scenario, we hear that the hole was simply too deep for Hawk to dig out of in four years, and thus the cycle of GB bashing continues.

GB can't win in either scenario. He'll always be the goat. It's unfortunate because as you say, he did give us some very good years. It was his team that killed the fuskers. It was his team that brought a B12 championship to Boulder.

Keep in mind that we are using a rush LB in certain situations as a DE. We will continue to see guys like Beatty, Rippy, Major, etc. At that hybrid DE/OLB position and I do believe that some of of these kids will grow some more, possibly a guy like Nobriga or Rippy.

Is it just me or could that have been just as easy to read if it were in, say, Arabic?

agree with you and 96 on this...

'barnett bashing' , 'voting obama' and 'living green' are trendy in Boulder.

Barney did some good while he was here.

Click on the top part of the picture and it'll show up in another window, and you can then zoom in to read it better.

I am pretty amazed that looking at that depth chart was not enough to get a couple of top rated safeties here. Man, we are thin there.

Oh good lord.

:blah:

You don't recall some of the more hair brained folk calling for an end to the FB program or the elimination of scholly's? I do. If you eliminate the scholly's, that is what you have DIII football. I would not be surprised if the FB program was closer to something radical coming down from the admin than we know.

We have four TE's using up their eligibilty next year, wow.:wow:

i think we will be ok there. We will have a junior, sophomore, and freshmen next year. and I would bet we tend to take one every year from here on out.

Next year the entire defensive backfield becomes priority. (Especially now that Lamont Smith is gone)

The good news is that we are caught up on o-line, so I doubt that we will be getting 7 in a class anymore. Allow us to spread out those schollys.

I'm not too worried about TE. Hawk seems to have a good handle on spreading the depth out along that position.

The defensive backfield will be important next season, along with DLine and WR. We're probably going to want to nab an LB, QB, RB as well.... so basically every position

I actually would not be surprised if Hawk and staff target a JUCO TE. They seem to hone in on a couple positions each year where they're looking for immediate help, and that could be the position next year. Would not be a bad idea IMO.

You're right about basically addressing every position, but you can certainly set priorities. I agree on DB, DL, and WR. I would add QB (of course hopefully we're taking one every class regardless).

Deehan is going to be great... he looked good last year as TR FR.

No faith in Deehan, or just think that we need more options?

Actually really like Deehan, just think they want a third option to complement Deehan and Wallace. Don't think they necessarily want to rely heavily on Thornton as a redshirt freshman, but who knows.

That chart shows the value of Brian Cabral. There is a reason that the LB position is deepest across all classes.

Cabral is awesome.

What skid said...

There is talent across that list. Only question is which one(s) are the next awardformerlyknownasButkis winner(s).

The FB program makes $, granted not like a Texas or OU, but it funds all the women's sports which are huge money losers, and the other men's sports. It attracts high school students, and gives national exposure to the university. The administration isn't going to kill a cash cow. In the end - money always talks.

:yeahthat:

Regardless of what the academic pinheads want, the powers that be understand how things work. The more exposure your school gets, the more applications it receives. The more applications it receives, the more students it gets. The more students it gets, the more revenue it receives. It's simple cause & effect.

We keep trashing GB, but we have to give him some credit. He did re-establish our rivalary with NU and almost took us all the way to a National Championship game. He gave us a few good years even though he screwed up towards the end he did what he could and that was probably all he had to offer anyways.

I'm sure you all enjoyed that late November afternoon when we ran all over NU and beatem 62-36.

Everytime a coach leaves it'll set your program back a few years we've seen every program have their ups and downs when this happens with a few exceptions here and there. Look at Michigan they had a down year and i'm sure that recruiting class was ranked pretty high. Hawk is in his 4th year, his foundation has been laid and we're all expecting results. He's built dept at most positions and this will be his make it or break it year.

If Cody does win the QB job this year, his dad's job will be riding on his arm.

Hahaha. Sometimes I think that the best situation for you all is that cody will graduate early and just start coaching.
Personally I am rooting for him to improve to the quarterback we need him to be .
If not, then i hope he stays as a coach.
He has heart. And is someone who i am proud to see in black and gold.!!!!

The way I read the chart. Unless Hawkins is a heck of a coach. The Buffs will have about a .500 season in '09. The breakout year, if there is going to be one for Hawkins, is going to be '10.

Just my Husker loving opinion anyway, so don't trash me to much for it.

BTW, Looks like Hawkins put together a pretty good class this recruiting season.

Good Luck in '09, except for the Husker game.

Eh. Yea. I could kind of see that. BUt because of the sub par seasons we have had the last three years, i really don't think that without an outstanding year this year that in 2010 we will have much of a chance in recruiting for 10'

We are getting more experienced, not less. We had 32 underclassmen on the 44-man 2-deep roster for the Nebraska game. Now those guys will be sophomores and juniors, and we will get back guys who were injured all year, like Major, Miller, and Tuoiti-Mariner, so not only will we be more experienced but more talented.

But yeah, Hawkins is a heck of a coach.

I have bashed the GB era, but I'm not a GB basher. The "scandal" was something that GB couldn't overcome and I always felt that whatever was going on here, was going on before GB got here, and likely on many campuses everywhere. There was a perfect storm in Boulder with Betsy, our DA, and Gary's infamous Katie Hnida quote that nearly took football away from us here in Boulder.

To be clear, any comment I've ever made on these boards about the cupboards being bare were not meant to disparage GB. It was the circumstances. Way too many characters seem to think we were the Big 12 North champs (evidently they chose not to watch the 70-3 shellacking), so why can't Hawk get it done? Look at the depth charts he inherited. Count the number of quality QB's and OL guys we had in the pipeline. The program was slipping fast, thanks to SexGate - we had no talent coming in for several years, and we were losing players to attrition faster than they were coming in.

It's behind us. We are building the foundation. But we will be VERY young still for another year.
