With Polk sliding over to safety this is the RB situation

It looks like Hawk created a "gap" in classes. Atleast RB is an easy position for freshman to contribute

Hawk will pull at least 2 kids in this recruiting cycle. Hopefully Mister Jones and the kid from Corona(Jordan James)

Maybe even three. You figure one plays as a true freshman and the other redshirt. Just a thought.

This move does create space for more top-flight RB's which could for sure help out on recruiting, especially since we are going to win 10 games next year. We'll be fighting the 5 stars off with a stick.

We'll take two, maybe 3 RBs in next year's class, giving us only a one year gap.

I'm not worried about it.

Everyone seems really confident in pulling Jones. Has he said anything? It would be nice to get this kid early. A good way to start the class of 2010.

Don't be surprised if Hawk uses one of the remaining 2009 schollys for an RB now, and RSs him.

On a completely other note, PT Gates apparently didn't qualify for San Diego St. and is still wallowing in JC. He is listed on the 2010 NFL Draft board as the 34th best RB.

I highly doubt Hawk will add anything to the 09 class. Who's available?

And PT Gates is at Grand Valley State. He played some last year. Not great stats, but not horrible either. I wish him the best of luck. Good kid.

This is a subject that I've written on before. Gaps are good. They allow athletes some time to develop in the position, and we've obviously got some RBs now that we'd like to see develop.

It also allows the staff to concentrate on helping the current players rather than spreading their time, and this is an under-unappreciated factor.

The last factor, as you point to, is that it provides a carrot to draw new RBs in and allows them an opening to contribute immediately.

I've noticed previously that the staff likes to hit an area for a while and then lay off for a while. The current players are then allowed to 'spread' out timewise and fill the position.

I was thinking that the upcoming in-state RBs now have an opening. You'd know more about that than I would, but I recall that the in-state crop of RBs in 2010 and 2011 is looking good. It's been a while since we've had a good in-state RB, and now they've got a very good reason to stay at home.

Is it too early to start our campaign to persuade Mister Jones (RB, Littleton - 2010) or Adonis Ameen-Moore (RB, Mullen - 2011) to stay home?

It's looking real, real good. I love to get Mister Jones, and some of the other prospects. But I'd trade all of them for Adonis in '11. That kid is going to be something else.

Stewart is healthy and if scott can be the guy we all know he can be,we have 2 solid guys right there. Sumler looked much better the last month and lockridge showed some talent when he played so we look fine at rb.

....I will be 1 depressed Buff fan if we can't wrangle up Adonis in 2 years

FIFY. I don't see a problem!

As a Buff fan and observer, recent history has shown that not all Mullen grad football players can qualify for top-flight academic institutions like CU. You might remember Maurice Greer as a recent Mullen recruit (a few years ago) that everybody was after. Barnett was proud and happy to get the commit, but he never made it onto the field. They have a "special program" for some of these guys at Mullen. Jon Hawk was another highly recruited athlete from Mullen, a commit to Oklahoma, and he couldn't even make the academics there. Many stories like this. I don't know about Adonis' academics, but like Valdez says, this kid is special. He reminds me of a young Lendale White. Hawk needs this kid right in the crosshairs.

It's because of a program they have at Mullen, the De La salle Program. I dont know if anyone we are after or want are in this program, but if they are they Def. wont be getting into any BCS school.

Jon Hawk never had a shot, he was in the De la salle program and earned a single digit score on his ACT's.

Little known fact on Maurice Greer....wasn't a complete academic issue...he had cancer and some other serious medical problems that kicked up round high school graduation and therefore couldn't take the time to go to school full time...he could have done what was necessary to get into CU if it weren't for that...

BUT...he took a year or so off and now plays for TROY, where's he's doing pretty good now

This program does exist...but they have gotten much better with the intensity of these classes recently due to some of its failures in the past and others complaints...when I went to school there, the De La Salle program was a complete joke and more of a daycare before football practice

Jon Hawk scared the **** out of me as an underclassman walking past him in the halls....but definately wasn't the brightest cat for sure

2009 snapshot of players with experience:
JR-Sumler,
SO- Stewart, Scott, Lockridge

This is not a serious gap imo. Not one that makes you run out and use a scholly left over from 2009 on some questionable recruit or even think about 3 guys next year, given our limited numbers available for 2010. We have 3 sophomores with playing experience, 2 of which have a redshirt year, in case they have a nagging injury or something. It was too crowded already and anyone we would have taken in '09 would have had to be pretty good to see the field.

I see this as a great opening for 2 kids from the 2010 class who can come in and redshirt (be ready to play if needed) and have 2 full years on campus before they are the "go to" backs. We will need 2 good ones for sure in 2010. A juco makes no sense as then we'd have 4 guys in the same class...

This should bump CU up on the RB radar screen for 2010 recruits. We played Scott, Stewart and Lockridge as true freshmen. This "gap" means that 2010 recruits may get to see significant playing time in year 3... Get a couple good RB's in 2010 and use all remaining scholarships to continue to build the pipeline at ALL positions.

Still, the timing of the Polk move is sort of weird.

JMHO, but don't you think Hawk would have made a stronger push for a 2009 RB or two had this decision been made in, say, December?

Not being critical. Polk has and does impress me as the type CU needs - at whatever position. But I wonder what the class might have looked like...
