I really hate to say this, but the Ralphie run really needs some improvement IMO. The run itself is cool but I think something needs to be done prior to it. Here's my experience:

You see the players and handlers readying Ralphie to run...but you have no clue when it is gonna happen. So we start awkwardly chanting "Ralphie, Ralphie, Ralphie." But, we're still waiting so we stop and stand quietly for the most part. Than randomly Ralphie starts to run and we all cheer. IMO this could be improved.

I know some will say, the tradition is fine the way it is. But, if this is one of college football's better traditions, it better live up to it. I think the running of Ralphie should be the culmination of a lot of things. Thoughts? Or am I way off base here. runRALPHIErun :gobuffs:

Typically when suggesting something needs improvement, it's good to suggest actual improvements.

I had been thinking the exact same thing. I thought it would be kind of cool to have video footage of an actual buffalo stampede playing on the video boards with the bass turned up in correlation with a countdown similar to kick-off.

Ya that would be cool. I realize it would be hard to coordinate with Ralphie because she runs when she wants but a countdown would be awesome. IMO it is great as is but it could be way way better with small improvements. Before she runs it's just awkward sitting there waiting and not knowing when she will go. And I was asking for suggestions as well

Back in my day, they used to have the cheerleaders hold up signs on each side of the stadium. One said "Buffalo", the other said "Stampede".

It would be cool if, for about 30 seconds prior to her running, if they could get the fans to do that.

I suggest that prior to Ralphie's run an effigy of the opponent's mascot (filled with red colored water or goo) is paraded about the field and then set on a pole at around the 40 yard line. Then, Ralphie is encouraged to charge out onto the field and slam into it, splattering 'blood' all over the field.

This year, the 'pinatas' would include:
a ram, a cowboy, a jayhawk, a tiger, and my two favorites, an aggie and a cornhusker.

How cool would that be?

That would be cool, but Ralphie isnt a rodeo bull.

Okay ideas, but are talking about a still fairly wild and dangerous animal, its not even a given that she'll run to open every half. Anything suggestions should definitely be run past the Ralphie handlers first, safety should be a top priority.

After the PA announcer says "here comes Ralphie!" the crowd should shout "**** YOU!" That'd be allsome.

The problem with this sort of thing is that Ralphie is supposed to run out in front of the team and the time the team comes out is never the same. We run into the same problem in Basketball Band. We're supposed to do this stupid thing where we go down on the court and play the theme from 2001 and segue into "Fight CU" when they come out. Because the team never comes out at the same time, this is almost always awkward. This is what any sort of pre-run Ralphie pageantry is up against.

In football there is also a hold up for television sometimes. The team has to wait for the signal from the TV crew.

There's just so much potential to do something awesome IMO. Prior to Ralphie running, there really isn't anything

Once you come up with something, email Mike Bohn. He's pretty receptive to ways of making things more exciting/enjoyable.

I think we should tie a dummy to her dressed in the opposing teams uniform that she can drag around the field :smile2:

edit: ahh idea taken. I missed Daah's post.

I don't know, I actually think it's great the way it is. I like the anticipation of it all, and not knowing exactly when Ralphie's going to bust out of the cage.

This sounds like a good idea. Stadium chants kick ass

Ooook. So here is the total package. semi serious.. semi.. On the Tron Screen we show the clip of the water buffaloes stampeding and crushing mufasa. (Lion King.) Then for night games, like against OSU, we put glow in the dark highlights on ralphies fur and rev up a monster of a fog machine. ....
Just imagine him running out of a tunnel through the fog machine with all of that..
Makes me shudder.

Beautiful.

My suggestion: RUN ralphie directly toward the opponets fans turn and take a dump on their sideline and have the announcer say " ralphie says you ain't ****!"

Well as a former Ralphie Handler I have to chime in on this one. We would have loved to have something more coordinated. But the problem, at least with TV games, is that we literally held her in the cage ready to run until the TV people gave us a sign then we had to run immediately. The TV people never seemed to care about timing, as long as they got their shot. My biggest complaint in the last couple years is Hawkins never gets the team out in time to run. It is just not the same if the team is not following Ralphie out. They need to get back to what hey did in the late 90's, have video play on the scoreboard and right at the end ralphie runs and the team follows out of a tunnel filled with smoke. That was by far the best.

Yep, that was cool, drop a line, i'm sure hawk would oblige.

Rep just for being a ralphie handler.

and yes, write Hawkins with your ideas. You never know when he might listen and try something.

rep!

I miss the team following her. I think it puts more electricity in the crowd too.

Also, anybody know the status of the new Ralphie? She is already famous on the Animal Planet, her spring game run was featured on a show about incredible animal videos. Is she gonna run this year?
