CU's Pitman pleased with Buffs' offseason conditioning regimen

We've heard this same song and dance every off-season. We have freaks and people with speed. Back it up with wins or be quiet.

So was pitman's ......

Seeing that there are exactly zero chances for the Buffs to win a game any time within the next five months, what exactly are you suggesting? A media blackout?

Maybe Bohn should forbid any press contact with the football team until a winning season is in hand?

Hey that's a great Idea

I'm suggesting that we hear this same stuff every spring,. I can't wait to hear the soundbites during the spring. Maybe hawk will push his prediction to 11 games

I hope all of them are doing great and improving their game, that would be awesome and what we need, just show us on the field and not in the media.

But Skiddy asks a great question, Syko. What's the solution?

I understand that you're a results oriented kind of guy. I know that you root for the team, but you're less concerned about "off the field progress" when it doesn't translate into wins. Talk is cheap in your mind (it's all I've got, so I personally value it).

However, it remains the responsibility of the athletic department to sell tickets and to continue to generate excitement for this team. I do believe that Pitt is sincere in his remarks, but the point of putting them out there is to feed the fanbase and to reward the student atheletes for their hard work in the offseason.

After three losing seasons should Plati and the gang place a moritorium on positive remarks regarding the team? Should they release a press statement which reads "sorry, due to the lackluster nature of our team's win/loss record for most of this millennium, we regret to inform you, the fanbase, that we will not produce positive statements regarding the individuals on the team, or the team as a whole, until they win a bowl game"?

Never mind, don't asnwer--I've got a hunch that you'd like that solution.

Of course not. Just don't expect everyone to take everything they say at face value either. As far as on-field results go, they haven't earned the benefit of the doubt.

Your a military guy as I was, results matter. I think they should continue to say whatever they want, all i'm saying is, what they feed us in the off-season hasn't translated to the field so, I tend to brush it aside as coach speak and look to see it on the field and in the win/loss column.

I understand it, and they should get the fans excited and sell tix, and at the same time, I can say show me on the field and in the win/loss column. I know it's taboo thinking here but i'm not going to change that way of thinking until the hype starts becoming a reality and we win more than we lose.

Given the choice between CU PR that sells more sizzle than steak, or Syco's monotonous "shut up and win", give me the PR bull sh!t.

I like hearing that Speedy is the strongest player on the team on a pound for pound basis, and that Jimmy Smith consistently clocks a 4.4-4.5 forty.

I see, so your gushy, fuzzy all hype BS is much better than them actually doing it on the field. Iguess you like those who talk more than they walk. Give me results over hype bull sh!t anyday.

Monotonous is when you keep telling everyone how good you are yet the results show you are not.

I knew jimmy smith ran a 4.4 2 years ago, watching speedy bust tackles last year showed how strong he is, you need that kind of info to keep you going? You must love the "we can't keep this player of the field" comments even though that players isn't playing or on 3rd string.

I've always said we all want the same for CU but the talk gets cheaper and cheaper with every loss.

Of course winning speaks more loudly than empty promises. Duh!

You are the one who contrasts media relations with on field performance. You are the one who states the false choice of either gushy hype BS OR winning.

Monotonous is saying the same thing time and again. Yes, Bohn & Hawk promising the moon and delivering three losing seasons is disinginious. Yes, Syco saying some variation of "Shut up and win" as the central theme of multiple posts is monotonous.

Keep in mind that this message board is not about either sunshine pumping OR assuming the team is mediocre until proven otherwise. This board is not about either drinking kool aid or pessimistically expecting the worst in order to be pleasantly surprised when CU wins.

This board is about entertainment in support of team. The same old "shut up and win" comment is old, tired, and meaningless during the off season.

We all recognize that there is nothing Hawkins can do to change his W/L record for the next 150 days. There is NOTHING that Hawkins can do to win a game during the off season. So why keep challenging him to do the impossible with an other broken record message? Why keep digging through the same old ashes every time CU Buffzone puts out propaganda? The Buffs can not win or lose until the 2009 campaign begins.

Between now and then, all there is to read is fluff. That's how the off season works.

great post and rep, and I think thats what drives me crazy about the pessimists the most. The fact that they sound like a broken record when there is absolutely nothing they, the coaches or the players can do about it RIGHT NOW.

I have many of the same frustrations as these people, but I think it is just healthier to relax, not take it so seriously and start fresh when the new season rolls around and see what happens.

I'm with Syko on this. You can only buy so much BS, and it got old last year. No more warm fuzzy stories; they lost their luster and really do not matter anymore if the team is still losing. Warm fuzzy stories when the team is kicking ass on field are great, but the same when they dont produce crap on the scoreboard starts to become meaningless rabble and excuse making.

To use another military analogy, you can have the best trained high tech all-volunteer military in the world, that's well educated, looks pretty with all their shiny medals, that generates cool commercials and wonderful legandary stories BUT is getting their asked kicked by a bunch of peasants in pajamas in the battlefield than it doesnt phucking matter. If you lose the war, all the other crap doesnt matter.

If the "Put up or shut up" crowd had there way, Matt should just close down the football forum. Nothing written matters because Hawkins has to win some games before the English language shall be used to talk CU football.

If that's not what you want, Syko, then please elaborate.

IMO, this insistance on pointing out that CU is mediocre until proven otherwise is just an other varity of poop.

Hawkins and the team can:

  • get in fantastic shape

  • provide academic support and encourgement

  • bring the newer players into the fold

  • keep releasing fluffy stories to keep the fans interested between seasons

  • help Ballenger and Hansen with the playbook so they are ready to step in for Cody

  • begin aggressively recruiting for 2010...

But you're right, they can't change last season's stats.

I'm a sucker for CU propagana, myself. It's better than saying "how come they don't tell us anything for 9 months?" Tell me human interest stories, or weight room stats, how injured buffs are recovering, or that the long snapper has a music video. (Yeah, seriously, that's Austin Bisnow below.)

Keep it up, Hawkins & crew, do what you can to get this team in position for an outstanding 2009 and beyond. And Plati can keep telling me all about it because I want to know.

 Talk about broken records, the bs I read from the kool-aid crowd is just as bad as the pessimists. We hear the same thing over and over yet you have no problem if it's your view. Great logic.

Good Effing crust, who said anything about shutting down the football forum? You guys are so sensitive to any criticisms of anything hawk, record results etc...

Gush all you want, I'll just stop posting on these matters and keep my rolling eyes and disbelief at more bravado comments to myself. That way,you can enjoy the board and hype away.

I'll be flying in for the spring game so I'll be able to see how improved we are from last spring. I hope we crush everyone and win our predicted 10 games.

Ballenger's max bench was 215?!?:wow:

Sigh, these guys are football players, not power lifters or olympic lifters.

I *LOVE* seeing these guys put up great numbers as it definitely does show the team is getting stronger, but that's not the end all be all in football. Football players are more concerned about weight than about strength, at least typically. Football players not certainly not the strongest athletes on the planet, especially when you consider pound for pound strength. They have to specialize and spend a lot of time taking snaps as well.

Also, training for max strength has consistently been shown to reduce power output. Power output, not maximal strength (unless we are talking about the the lines), is more crucial to success, especially in football.

The fact that the their squats and clean #s are going up shows a good program is in use. I would love it if we saw max deadlifts, overhead squats and snatches, but to each his own.

The bench press is an overrated POS anyway. Anyone that uses the "bench press" to show how manly they are doesn't usually know anything about strength, especially as it relates to sports. The overhead press more directly translates to shoulder and chest strength (there is a relationship between the bench press and overhead press), but I'd also love it if we saw max jerks. Again, power output > maximal strength for most sports. When I go to the gym I see a lot of wannabe powerlifters that do decline, incline and bench to "get ripped." Sorry, that's not how it works. You really need to use your legs and back to get absurdly strong and focusing so much on your chest will give you SEVERE rotator cuff problems, which is VERY problematic for a QB.

And for the naysayers, the fact is that the team has to be strong to compete and that is simply not something we had with our old coaching regime. Great conditioning, combined with strength, will let you beat your opponent 9 times out of 10. I liken football to boxing in that regards. A team can have more natural talent than the other, but a better conditioned team can certainly even things out.

But I will also say this, no one ever lost a game and wish they could bench press 10 more pounds. The last time I checked there wasn't a bench press on the 50 yard line where 2 teams could compete for most reps or strongest team. I've seen major strides lately in our conditioning and strength and that will translate to wins, provided that our coaches put them in a position to win. I'm certain of that. That's why this season will rest on our coaches...I feel we can definitely compete week in and week out with the rest of the Big 12 North.

"Hawkins needs to shut up and start winning games" is not a critism. It is a position statement that is used as a pat talking point.

I have no problem with constructive critism. I do find bringing up winning, or rehashing Hawk's 13-23 record in the month of March to be neither constructive nor critical. Bravado is also annoying.

I'm calling you out because the Pittman article had nothing to do with chest thumping and bravado. He did not claim that the Buffs would win the North. He indicated maturity and commitment as would be expected with Hawk's older recruits becoming upper classman.

My critism of Pittman has been that there have been some ACL tears happenng to the OL, and question whether the training regime should shoulder culpability.

Your 'critism' points the finger at sunshine pumpers, and reguritates a standard party line that you refuse to believe coach speak until they start winning some games.
