Are true frosh DEs (like Nick Kasa) ever dominating when they are true freshmen? I think Kasa's body is freaking huge, and his ability looks to be limitless, so does that mean he can start becoming an elite big 12 talent as a true frosh?

The majority of top DE recruits go to schools like USC, Ohio St, LSU where they don't need these guys to play as true freshman.

Here are 4 recruits in the top 250 from 2008 that played last year and their stats:

Quinton Coples - North Carolina - DE - #101 recruit - 2008
6 solo tackles, 8 total
3.5 tackles for loss
1.5 sacks
1 QB hurry
1 Fumble Recovery

Datone Jones - UCLA - DE - #125 recruit - 2008
10 solo tackles, 15 total

If you remember, we were recruiting Datone Jones pretty hard.

Everette Thompson - Washington - DE - #176 - 2008
11 solo tackles, 18 total
5 tackles for loss
2 sacks

Tony Jerod - Texas A&M - DE - #177 - 2008
11 solo tackles, 20 total
3 tackles for loss
1 sack
*started 7 games

I also checked the top 104 players in sacks during the 2008 and there was not one true freshman in the group. There was also one redshirt freshman that made the list (Tom Keiser - 2 star - Stanford). Unfortunately, I don't think it's fair to expect Kasa to be dominant as a true freshman.

The success of the DE will depend on the development of players like Shields, Obi, Goree and Cunningham.

We really need Cunningham to step up at DT. He showed promise last season, so hopefully he kicks it up a couple notches this season. Still unsure about Goree. Gotta think one of the two true freshmen tackles will get a look.

As far as DE goes, Herrod and Obi are the best bets for seeing the most playing time, which I do not think is a huge stretch. Also see Kasa playing quite a bit too.

A big question mark right now, no doubt about it.

I think today, people expect much more of freshamn then in years past. It gets magnified here because of our lack of talent when hawk came in. Iam probably more guilty of this thinking than anyone. Expecting freshman to come in and dominate is not going to happen most of the time. There are exceptions but we can't expect kasa to come in and get 10-11 sacks.

We just need to be consistent and solidify our run defense and find ways to get pressure on the qb from the front 4. Everybody seems to run some type of the spread now and it's more difficult to get to the qb with the quick passing game.

daquan bowers..

He is an absolute freakshow. Tore our tackles new ones all day long in the Gator Bowl. Perfect blend of size, speed, and strength. Scary to think of where he'll be in 2 years if he stays healthy. I think with your depletions along the defensive front you should see Kasa out there early this season. He's gonna be a good one for you guys.

If we see Kasa and Nuckols, it'll be after game 6 or 7, IMO. It's going to take them at least that long to figure out where they're supposed to line up. Not that we won't see them at all, but the guys ahead of them have all been in the system a lot longer and will have the benefit of spring practices on their side. We might see Kasa coming in on passing downs in order to keep his assigments simple, as in "Go get the passer".

Not necessarily. Cunningham was playing during the non-conference schedule this past season, even with two very experienced DTs starting. Some guys pick it up a lot faster than others.

And if that's the case - great. I think it would be awesome if both of these guys could come in and pick things up right away. I'm just saying that it's the exception, not the rule. We shouldn't be depending on them to make the defense better this year.

True, although I think one of the reasons you do not see more freshman DTs seeing a lot of playing time is due to size. Most simply do not have the size to compete at the college level right away. That is not the case with Nuckols.

Right.. or it's not the right kind of weight.

I did try to look up daquan bowers, but I must've missed his stats.

Here they are:

13 games played, 6 games started
39 solo tackles, 8 assisted tackles, 47 total tackles
8 tackles for loss
1 sack
3 pass break ups
15 quarterback pressures

One thing to remember though is that Daquan was the #2 overall recruit last year. On rivals, he was only ranked behind Terrelle Pryor and was 4 spots ahead of Darrell Scott.

How many top OTs does the ACC have? I know they played against Bama, but I hardly doubt he started against such a top team as a true frosh.
