Buffs and the 3-4

The Buffs have been showing a lot of 3-4 defensive looks in 11-on-11 work at this early stage in spring, with the starting linebackers being Burton, Jeff Smart, B.J. Beatty and Doug Rippy

A little more evidence on what I, and a lot of other allbuffers, thought would happen.

Syko, what does this do to your lamentations about our Dline only getting 4 players last recruiting class? I do believe we discussed this a bit :)

Edit: notice the starters? Burton? Guess all that size makes him a good rush end? Is he gonna be quick enough to stay with TE's and RB's? Pegged him for a MLB in the 3-4...

i think that, altho it is obvious that they have to go to a 3-4 due to personnel issues, we are still likely to see struggles along the d-line.

who among these guys is a prototypical nose tackle?

and, thus far, we keep hearing how the o-line is knocking the crap out of the d-line. everyone keeps saying it shows how good the ol is. perhaps. maybe it also means the dl is not that ready yet, too, however.

we will know more as they work in full contact. hard to tell much in touch practices with no pads on.

i wish we had one big monster 300lb nt with a good first step. that would solve a lot of problems right now. you need a guy who can make 2 blockers commit ideally.

ah well. we will see.

gotta play to your strengths and we certainly appear to have more quality lbs who are ready to go than we have quality dl who are ready to go. i hope the true frosh that are coming in can contribute (that's a big ask for freshmen on the dl, but, hey, we can hope).

I would be shocked if that is the starting lineup against CSU. I think we'll see quite a bit of the traditional 4-3 and the 3-4 this year.

Agreed. The one drawback I see going to a 3-4 as the base defense is that finding a true NT is gonna be tough. I mean, it is tough enough recruiting DTs that translate well to the next level, but NT seems even harder.

Also agree that the offensive line will probably look better in part because the defensive line has some holes. Still excited about the offensive line though.

I have heard some positive things about Goree.... none of the other DL have been mentioned as significantly improved. We have a few of the gusy with teh size to be true NT... but none have shown the talent.

It would be nice if Goree really stepped up. I think he has the size to be a NT, not really sure about anyone else in terms of size or talent.

The LBs do look bigger, as does Obi. Wonder how it is going to shake out. I have to think the only guy that really has a starting spot on lockdown is Mohler, maybe I'm wrong though. I think Beatty is going to be a force also.

I'm not a fan of the 3-4 as a base defense in college football. But using it for certain situations? I'm all for that.

It's spring, I'm sure the 4-3 will be the main set but it looks like they are planning on playing some 3-4 which is fine.

But that doesn't mean you recruit less DL. CU doesn't have a ton of depth there at this time but it's getting better.

As long as we are putting pressure on the qb and getting some sacks, they can run a 2-5-4 for all I care.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but in the 3-4 doesn't your DE's focus on the run more than rushing the QB? Won't players like Rippy and Beatty turn into your rushing ends at OLB?

Right.

It'd be nice to see some improvement from the DL. But with Beatty and Co. I'm pretty confident we'll be able to harass the QB.

Heck, if we can get that green laser that idiot had for the oklahoma state game, that should help too...

Some of our best teams of all time ran the 3-4. It's a fun defense to watch.

We ran the 4-3 last year with a LB (Jones or Beatty) lined up at DE with his hand on the ground. We had lots of discussions on this during the recruiting cycle as it pertained to recruiting DL position.

Running a 3-4 is quite a bit different than that, and I question if this is ACTUALLY happening, or if these reports don't really know the difference. I've yet to attend a practice, so I have no clue.

I just wonder if what both of these reporters are referring to as a "3-4" isn't really a 4-3 with Beatty lined up at DE? Again - I have no idea, but I have not seen a coach or a player state we are "going to a 3-4". I HAVE heard them say we are looking to bring pressure from a lot of different positions.

I hope someone can confirm this.

Joe Collier says the Nose Tackle is the single most important player in the 3-4 defense along with the 2 inside linebackers. You need a player at NT that can tie up 2 olinemen and not get moved out of there.

The 3-4 tends to be more of run defense. The DEs in the 3-4 are playing closer in to the center and have to be bigger and stronger.

It is not just a matter of saying - oh we have a lot of linebackers lets go to a 3-4.
