Back from Practice 4/6

After falling asleep during the Rockies game (ya baseball is boring), I hit up practice. Nothing really too different then the other practices.

Notes:

Hawk was working a lot with the special teams. It was definitely a focus during practice... Riddle was no where to be found during these drills. It seems like Riddle is 99% TE's, and 1% ST's. I can also see why the specialists struggled last year (P's, K's). For most of the practice they stare and watch and occasionally kick into a net. No one is watching/guiding them at all. At one point the specialists even left the bubble.

QB's: It looks like Cody is running with the 1st team. Hansen looked pretty impressive today. He has a really nice touch on his fade routes, and just overall. Ballenger appears to be an afterthought at this point IMO. I saw him fumble and he forgot the same play twice in a row............
RB's: Darrell Scott really towers over all of the other RB's. He is by far the biggest RB, you can almost compare his size to Jimmy Smith (but thicker). Speedy's head goes to about the top of Scott's shoulder pads. Scott was a pretty tenacious blocker surprisingly...he more then held his own blocking DT Lagrone Shields on one play. Lockridge left to practice with the WR's for a couple plays, it looks like he'll play quite a bit in the Slot. To me, Lockridge has a faster 2nd gear then Speedy, but Speedy's quickness is just incredible.

WR's: Markques Simas=stud. Him and McKnight are far and away the best WR's IMO. On one play Simas leaped up and snagged the ball right from the defenders facemask...it was a very impressive play. It looks like Espinoza will get some solid PT this year.

OL: Johnson has them all practicing snapping. Even Miller was snapping with Cody under the center. He even did some practice snaps for FG's. Interesting IMO.

DL: Although this looks like a weakness (to me atleast), they played really well in the Offense vs Defense drills. Most of the run plays ended up with the RB being stopped in the backfield or right at the line. It looked like they had Speedy stopped behind the line when he ran into the OL, but he bounced around the RT and burst forward for a TD
LB: Rippy will be something special before he leaves IMO. Sipili took a leadership role on the 2nd team defense. He was telling other guys where to line up and was a vocal leader. Major was no where to be found.

DB's: Burney doesn't look like he lost a step at all. He is definitely one of the quickest players on the team. Vince Ewing looks pretty impressive IMO. Jonathan Hawkins, Paul Vigo, and Chap (for a little while) sat out the drills. Perkins and Mahnke look really good. I find it interesting that Polk has been at all practices and other injured guys like MTM and Major have been missing... Stephen Hicks is rockin a Buffalo tattoo, pretty cool. It's always nice to see players taking ownership of a program

Overall it was a pretty up-tempo practice. No injuries and no scuffles that I saw:thumbsup: Jay Luewenberg (sp), Charles Johnson, and Zach Grossnickle were there. There was a recruit there that I recognized but I can't remember the name. Valdez any idea (I looked for you but there were a couple guys with Rockies hats). I'd say around 20 fans attended. One thing that bothers me tho is it seems like the people around the team regard the fans as a nuisance really to practice. Maybe that's just me... I'll post more if I remember. GO Buffs!!!

Hmmm... that's pretty disconcerting. Sounds pretty much like our running game last year with the only time any thing really got going was when Speedy was able to squirt through some place he probably shouldn't have. I realize it's only 4 practices into the year, but doesn't the the offense generally have a head start over the D?

PS- Rep for the write up. edit:ymssra

I forgot something regarding Goodman...when they lined up for FG's, a lot of the team would either boo or yell something at him like, "You SUCK," just to try to get in his head. Apparently it didn't work...he made 5/6 FG's

Yeah I was there. I was the guy with the cup, munching on some sunflower seeds.

I'm pretty sure sNc doesn't want to go around practice checking to see who's wearing a cup. You might want to try something a little more obvious next time...

seems kind of weird to practice in the bubble today. really nice in Boulder. the ground is still kind of wet, but hey....if space is at a premium and you'd like to get everyone involved (since it's spring ball and not game week prep)....weird to stay inside. JMO.

It was still wet outside. I noticed some snow on the grass. I'm guessing they don't want to tear the field up.

One of my friends who is on the video staff said it has been planned to practice in the bubble for a while to "preserve the (outside) fields." I lol'd at Hawk yelling to them today, "Are you guys having a tea party up there or video taping this."

That was funny. Hawk is pretty serious about his kick off drills.

Good stuff as always slider.

I am pumped to see Simas on the field this year.

i found this the most interesting tidbit of the day

its sound to me like johnson is trying to make everyone on his line interchangeable to the extent he can i like that A LOT!!!!!

Jimmy Smith has been doing great. I am really confident with our secondary. Especially with Mahnke out there laying people out. That boy can hit.

Good to hear valdez, Smith is a big-time talent. It should be nice having him and Beatty for a whole season this year. Both really stood out down the stretch last season.

Beatty is really fun to watch. He's a head hunter at OLB. My kind of player.

I watched the one on ones with the DL and OL. The OL seemed to control most of the DL, but Marquez Herrod had a good rep. He just overpowered the OL. I forgot who the OL was. I keep on looking for Tyler Sale to step up. I'm hoping he does because we need all the help we can get. It's beginning to look like a frosh will see plenty of PT.

The one on ones with the WR's and DB's were fun to watch. Jimmy Smith did great. I didnt' notice Burney out there. Anyone else see him? Jfly and Simas were solid.

Nice report. Anyone else almost have a heart attack when they read this part?
Rodney Stewart broke a run outside

I saw the words Rodney Stewart broke in progession and immediatly thought broken bone.

I am very interested to see which LB's will start come fall also. We may end up doing a rotation and have Rippy, Major, Beatty, Burton, Smart all sub in and out

Are we sure they were asked to do this by the coaches and not just sick of watching kicks doink off the uprights last year?:smile2: Just Kidding! I said it last year and I'll say it again right now, Goodman is going to be fine. I expect him to bounce back and have a great year (but it's nice to have Grossnickle as insurance, who I hope will redshirt!)

Rep for the great write up!

Scott also scored on a goal line situation, getting a good push from the big boys up front. He also has done a good job of picking up the blitz multiple times in recent practices.

I really like hearing this, and I am hearing it from multiple people. Last year Scott was absolutely lost in pass protection.

I commeted on the wrong post for some reason.

I need to learn how to use this thing.

He has a video interview up on Scout by Kyle Ringo, and he says he's open to redshirting if that's what the coaches want him to do.
