The article in the BDC isn't very encouraging.

Ballenger cringed at the question Thursday when asked whether he believes he is getting a fair shake.

"I don't know that I'm at liberty to answer that," Ballenger said. "I don't want to cause anything between me and Helfrich. That's up to him and what he decides is what he decides. It's up to him and what he decides is obviously what is best for the team. I've just got to keep working hard."

I remember his pops used to be a regular on the rivals site. He lost it on the staff a while back and I haven't noticed him back since.

I think the staff should be worried about losing him over the summer.

Maybe so. It was a curious choice for Helfrich/Hawk to burn Hansen's RS at the K-State game while Nelson and Ballenger looked on.

Nelson was never really a serious option. But I do think it's strange that they put Ballenger in once last season. He didn't do well, but how many QB's do well in that position?

The Camera article and Ballenger himself acknowledge that he's making the reads but not making the plays. I think (hope) he puts this on himself and realizes no one on the team (yet) has this job nailed, even if his chance is next year. If he can't complete the short stuff, where can he transfer and play?

I think Matt is admitting to making mistakes, but limiting his reps is probably not helping him become a better player. It's Spring Ball. Let him get his reps in.

I blame the interwebs for not giving Ballenger the Clark Evans treatment.

I do like the maturity shown in Ballenger's answer. If Hawk closed practices to keep players from becoming disillusioned, I can respect that.

Keep working, Matt! Hard work creates it's own luck.

That is certainly true. But there are a finite number of practices, and you have to practice well to play well. He must have been seriously lagging for this to happen after so few practice sessions. If he's doing so well at decision-making, hopefully he can work on mechanics with the second team.

Valdezj makes a good point about last yr pulling Hansen RS while MB looked on....But liked stated, the job is still open. I think the kid has all the right tools to play at this level, just has to get himself to believe in that.......GO BUFFS!!!!!
One side note question, what does it mean when a player is "gray shirt"??

This is best described in an example....I'll take Paul Vigo (Buffs Safety) who was a recruit in the class of 2008...he signed a letter of intent in 2008 but did not enroll @ CU until the spring of 2009 where his scholarship then counts against the class of 2009's number.

Most practice reports from fans ,sources etc.. have noted that ballenger wasn't playing as well as hansen and cody. This is his 3rd year here, if he hasn't grasped it yet then what do you do?

The problem is,if you aren't getting many reps, how do you prove or show the coach that your improving?

I already know who's going to be starting vs csu but I don't want to cause us a win by telling anyone and it getting back to the sheep............

I think Matty B should get back on the hardwood.

Phucking moot point now, he leaving. I tink its F-in BS when a player sees the writing on the wall that arent good enough to start, and rather than working their butt off and increasing their game they rather cry and quit and start all over somewhere else.

Whatever, good luck at smaller school if he wants to play next year, or riding the pine for a year if he wants to play Div I. Either way, I dont think he'll be a starter right away no matter where he goes, he will still have to compete.

I just hope he doesnt PR against the program, and start scaring other QB away saying that no one else will be a QB while Cody is there. NOt that it matters since Superman's love child Evans is coming this summer.

I'm not sure the "no one will start but the coach's son" is really a valid argument anymore.

Cody Hawkins is a junior - so any recruit who signed in 2010 would only have one year to wait for Cody Hawkins to graduate anyway.

Yep. If the coaches cannot recruit off of the current depth chart, there are issues.

Sheet, hope and pray neither gets hurt or just paint a big target on the chest of the one that's left for the season.

Evans, may be better than Tebow, but he still has to learn the offense.

CRap, not a good situation to be in, IMO. If neither get hhurt and last all season then no big whoop, but the depth chart scares me.

I think this is speculation that helps create the issues that Hawkins and other coaches despise. There is nothing wrong with discussing who and why a player is going to be 1st, 2nd, or 3rd string, but jumping to transfer conclusions is just ridiculous. Enough mouse peeps coming from places like this cause people to start posing these very questions to the parties involved potentially creating a situation that may never have existed in the first place. Valdez, I totally respect your views and opinions, you are probably the person I agree with most on this board, but I think this thread is internet board garbage and should be closed.

I think you need to realize it is not speculation. He is leaving.

BTW, is this going to be the standard response to anyone having an opinion? Nothing Valdez said was particularly offensive and now we're supposed to keep everything to ourselves because Hawkins closed practices? **** that.

Ummm, it was reported on cubuffs.com sport.

Everyone knows that Ballenger was not progressing to the point that he'd have had a shot, barring injury, of starting. Not a slam against him. Thats just the way it is in sports. He wants to play. Good luck kid. I hope he finds a good fit.

My hunch, and if I am wrong I apologize, is that this thread was started before the official news came out. And I want to reiterate that Valdez is the person whose opinion I most respect on this board, and if there was inside information that he knew, so be it. Regardless, I stand by my point of view that speculation on internal issues such as transfers, when we don't have anything more than fragmented bits of information is internet board trash.

Remember when this board went up in flames because some people here started telling us that they had heard from an "inside" source that Hansen was transferring? What happened? Multiple boards went crazy, the AD, coaches, players, etc were getting bombarded with questions from scared fans. They had to go so far as to issue a statement from the family that Hansen wasn't going anywhere. It was foundless internet drivel, and created a massive headache for the team. So Buffsyko was that ok sport?

Valdez did start the thread before the news came down and it was in response to a pretty bizarre statement from a newspaper article that did not come off well. Are we not allowed to form our own opinions from media reports either?

Your allowed to do whatever you want. Personally I don't think there is anything good that can come from it, but obviously plenty bad, especially when we create an animal based off of conjecture from how an article is worded, or from what somebody who knows somebody who said they heard this or that said. Just my opinion.

Valdezj stated an opinion of his, he didn't come out and say he WAS transfering. Here's an idea, how about hawk and staff quit blaming fans and look in the effing mirror.....

to what purpose? In this case, some kid wasn't content with riding the bench as 3rd string so he transferred. That actually seems to becoming the norm today, instead of the exception. Seems to happen to about every high profile program these days. Don't really see what Hawk could do to change the fact that not everybody is always going to be the starter, and not everybody is always going to be happy about it.
