Ballenger leaves the program

I wish him luck, but does that mean Mr. Evans doesn't RS this season?

He simply never would have played unless multiple QBs got injured. I hope the best for him, a good kid with a good heart.

I was surprised that Hawk implied he'd have a better shot at basketball than football - if that's the case Bally, the hardcourt Buffs could use you!

If he wasn't going to make it past 3rd string this year, and potentially 4th string next year, this is a good thing for CU in terms of scholarships. No sense in basically having his wasted when we could potentially use it on blue chip QB in the next year or two.

Losing an experienced QB to transfer is never a good thing. No matter how you look at it.

Yeah, those blue chip QBs are really lining up for our offense so it's a shame 3 star QBs have been taking their scholarship. Who was the last 4 star or 5 star QB we got? Having a blue chip QB is great, especially for recruiting other skill positions, but very few ever pan out. If we lined up system QB after system QB then I'd be really happy (see Tech), and if we got one NFL caliber QB then I'd jump for joy.

We need QBs that know the system. Having 3 or 4 QBs on scholarship that know the offense is always a good thing. Was it Wazzou or UDub that had to hold tryouts during the season to find a new QB? I don't think we'll ever get there given the number of QBs we have that have walked on, but I'd much prefer a scholarship QB than a walkon. I haven't heard of any walkon receiving any reps with the first team. That's bad given our new position of 2 scholarship QBs, while they are durable have very different playing styles.

So you guys would rather keep him on the team, unhappy about not getting playing time because he is never going to be better than the #3 QB, instead of having an extra scholarship to give out to someone who could be a starter at that position or any other on the team?

If he is a Buff through and through, then yeah, let him stay and ride the bench in happiness, but if his PT is more important than the team... Then I am glad he is gone.

No, my rant wasn't about Ballenger. I wish him the best. Seriously, I do. I don't want him, or anyone for that matter, to be on the team if they don't want to be. Hopefully he goes somewhere where he can start and I hope he does well. I don't think he quit on the team, he just wanted to play college ball and given that this is the only time he'll be able to play at a high level then it's best to leave for such a place. I think he's giving up a great education for free, but to each his own. Good luck!

My rant was because having scholarship QBs on the roster is an essential given today's game. While Ballenger may not have been as good of a QB as Hansen or Cody, if both go down who are we going to go with? Again, I haven't heard of any walk-on receiving reps so would we go with Evans? A true freshmen thrown into the fire completely (no first team reps, except for the few at the beginning of fall camp) would be disastrous unless he is truly something special. However, if he were truly something special then he'll be getting his first teams reps anyway and could move up to #2 even in fall camp based on talent alone.

Depth at QB is needed. See our '06 campaign. We didn't even have any QBs that helped us signal plays.

Yeah, I see what you are saying but it isn't very likely that we will need a 3rd stringer to play this year, and if so, Evans will have to step up.

Moten is also going to get a chance... in-fact, they probably give Moten the 3rd slot this fall, and RS Evans... at least that would be my speculation (unless of course Moten can contribute right away at another position)

I'm trying to think of the last CU QB who came in as a freshman and used up his eligibility without ever being the starter for more than a few games. Cox, maybe? It doesn't happen that often, in any program, and being leapfrogged by a younger player makes it less likely. It's just not that unusual for someone in Ballenger's position to transfer. Good luck to him.

I expected this sooner. I saw the look on his face the night of the KSU game when Hansen lit it up. It was a look of crushing disappointment. Getting a fair chance to compete for the start in spring is probably the only reason he stayed this long. Once he fell behind again... well, this writing was on the wall for a while.

However, glad he decided this early in practice so we don't have to worry about him. He will be fine somewhere. Good luck Matt, sorry it didn't work out for ya!

So he will have to sit out at least a year (2 if he goes within the Big 12) which will leave him only a year to play? Is that right?

Still concerns me more that this staff has brought in 4 QBs and failed to develop any of them into a solid starter. Hopefully Lil Hawk and/or Hansen step up and become that player this year and Evans and/or Moten prove to be the future. It seems to me that it's going to get increasingly harder to recruit top-level QB prospects if you can't show you can develop the ones you have in the program.

I wish Ballenger the best of luck.

I would argue that Cody has been solid, and what he lacks has nothing to do with coaching (i.e., height, arm strength, mobility). Hansen was practicing the CU play book for all of 15 practices during fall camp before being put on the scout team. He seems to be developing just fine.

Nick Nelson was a JUCO stop-gap measure when we had only a RSFreshman in Cody and true freshman in Matt B. I never saw him as the future of the program. Matt, I had high hopes for him, but he fell behind. I hope that he finds a place that will be rewarding to him and that he succeeds there.

I think it is WAYYYY to early to say that they failed to develop Hansen. The kid got tossed into the fire, burning off his redshirt (yall like how I did that :smile2:). He has thru Soph year before we can really judge his full development, IMO.

Beltway Buff and dionisus, please don't think that I am dismissing Hawkins or Hansen as being solid in the future. I hope they are. But since Hawkins got here they have brought in four QBs, Hawkins, Nelson, Ballenger & Hansen. Nelson never saw the field. Ballenger is gone. Hawkins is the starter and still has a lot to prove and Hansen is the hope. I just really hoped we wouldn't still be in this position this year.

Yeah, I agree to the extent that we haven't been able to bring in a 'for-sure' QB that we can hang the future of the program on.
