He has the measurables to be a top 10 pick IMO. I'm really looking forward to see how he improved from year 1 to year 2 on the OL. He played MLB in HS:wow:

Story from link:

4. Nate Solder, Colorado, OT: A handful of five-star recruits have come to CU in the past few years. Solder wasn't one of them. He was deemed an average tight end prospect by the online recruiting services, but man, has he blossomed in Boulder. He's now a chiseled 6-8, 300-pound junior with a staggering 8.3 percent body fat according to the school, which had him tested in the Bod Pod, a system for measuring body composition. The guy practically makes Dwight Howard look like a Van Gundy. Solder's workout numbers are just as impressive: He power-cleans 407, hang-cleans 445, back squats 622, vertical jumps 34 inches and runs the 40 in 4.86 seconds.

I thought it when they made the move, and this seems to re-enforce it. Solder will be a 1st or 2nd round pick when he comes out.

Not a bad LT.:smile2:

If he takes the big steps forward everyone expects, we'll be in great shape. Plus I like seeing the Colorado kids shine.

Nothing says success like analysis of power clean numbers vis a vis on the field success. Color me skeptical until I see him dominating on the field.

Here's the thing on Solder - the kid played HS football in Buena Vista. Not exactly the hotbed of football talent in the State of Colorado. CU recruited him based on his size alone, and rightfully so. In the hands of a really good position coach, he has all the measurables of a first rate offensive lineman in the NFL.

A friend of mine recently had beers with a NFL scout and the NFL scout is convinced Solder will be the top OT in the country in 2 years.

The numbers are great for Solder and I would love to see him blossom, you can't measure a nasty streak. I hope he has a big one because the O-line needs it.

I forgot to tell you guys about my trip to Cali last week. The 'beers with a NFL scout' brought it to mind. I was wearing a white CU cap in Disneyland and got a few 'Go BUFFS' from various people. As we were walking around the Matterhorn, I saw a group of people, and they started yelling 'GO BUFFS!! at the top of their lungs and high fiving me as I walked by. I was looking at them thinking they looked familiar, and realised in a bit that the one had to be Ryan Miller. I went back and chatted with him for a bit-- he said 'this is number 73 here too! ' I was pulling a blank (long day) and actually had to make a few calls later (HF came through with Matt Bahr) so that if I ran into them again I could call Matt my name. Was cool-- was sorry I did not have a camera to show you guys Miller stuffed into the matterhorn bobsleds!

Did not see them again; was our first day, and could of been their last at the park.

The guy has the ability to be the top OT in the country within a year or two. I hope Johnson gets him to that level. He struggled last year, but transitioning from MLB to TE to OT is a lot to handle for a kid that was also underweight for his position. If he adds another 10-15# of good weight (little fat, but mostly muscle) if he doesn't dominate with his measurables then I'll openly question this staff.

The only guy to go to Disneyland with his family and not bring a camera. I'm calling BS :smile2:

Cool to hear jens re: the pro scout. The NFL cares as much about measurables if not more than college production. That is something he will dominate. We need some Buffs to go in the 1st round:thumbsup:

He struggled at times last year, so what lefty says holds true. Until Solder dominates on the field on a consistent basis, talk is cheap.

Correct, solder did struggle last year at times. He will have to improve to become the dominant guy everyone keeps saying he is. He has all the tools and size, I think he'll make a jump this year.

Part of the puzzle with Solder is, will he have improved enough to keep a starting position throughout the season? No question his off season conditioning effort should translate to a higher level of performance on the field. I doubt he would settle for being a back-up lineman.

We did not take the kids; my wife was out there for an E-Trade conference, and we went a day early to have some time at D-land. Decided not to take the camera since the kids would not be with us. Maybe next year-- 4 and a half and a 2 and a half year old-- might be doable to make a trip there with them. This young-- not so much.

And his facebook picture now actually has him with one of the little kids he was with (obviously was there with some family members).

We did get the Photopass while we were there-- that is where they give you a little credit card thing with a barcode on the back-- they have photographers statined at various points and you just hand them your card, they take some photos of you and then when you get home, you can look at them and buy what you want to download on your computer.

I know he did, but lefty made him sound like crap.

Saying someone isn't dominant does not equal saying they are crap. Solder was a first year LT, heck, a first year OL last year. He did a decent job and he has potential IMO. But he did get worked in several situations last year. THat doesn't mena I think he's crap or he won't be a good player. Nearly any first year OL is going to get abused now and again, and almost no first year OL dominates.

Yup, especially when you are playing against Orakpo and that guy from Fl St. I wonder if he'll face another first AND second rounder this year. The guy was thrown into the fire.

I just hope if he does get pwned this year, it is against another elite DE... what EWU did to him was not cool :(

I think you're mixing up your OTs. It was Miller that got schooled against EWU. Their DE/LB was speed rushing him all game long and he never caught up.

Miller was the one but I'm sure solder had a couple also in that game. They need to anchor this line and I believe they will. They've had a ton of hype, the time for them is now and I think this year they will take their game to the next level.

both got torched. I remember one play in particular where they both windmilled their respective DE's... Cody didn't like that

Agreed. I think Solder is going to turn out to be the on field performance leader due to his physical gifts but I think Miller will end up being the emotional leader of the unit. Miller's got a fire about him, he's vocal and he's in people's faces to give their all. Last year after Miller went out in the FSU game the Oline play as a whole noticeably started to shrivel. I really think he's the battlefield general the rest of the group looks to. He's a natural leader.

As for Solder, I think Johnson is a godsend for him. His coaching will get Solder where he needs to be technique wise as quickly as possible and I believe the attitude Johnson wants his players to play with (aggressive & attacking) will be the catalyst that transforms Solder to the truly dominant player we know he can be.

I'm starting to feel good about this season. Big Strong Oline being coached to play aggressive, a stable of talented and powerful running backs, serviceable QB(s) & vertical game to compliment the ground game... If the O starts to click and plays even to just 75% of their potential we will be crushing a lot of people this season.

Great observations SJBuff. It really does seem like Miller is the emotional leader of the group. When he went down last year, we lost a very good player and a leader. Ouch.
