Danny Spond
Littleton, CO (Columbine)

The QB position is a big priority (as usual) for Colorado this year. Cody and Tyler are taking their battle for the starting spot into Fall Camp with no clear cut starter. Josh Moten and Clark Evans give Eric Keisau two more options at QB this fall. But to expect anything from these two this year is asking too much. Josh Moten will get his shot at QB this season but I expect him to land in the secondary before the season is through.

CU needs to look at bringing in at least two QB's this cycle. They've already gotten their first commit of the season in Danny Spond, but most schools projected Danny as a linebacker in college, not at QB. Spond committed to CU mainly because Hawkins promised him a fair shake at QB. With the uncertainty with Danny, CU needs another QB for this recruiting year.

Do you think our two walk-on QBs, Jerry Slota and Seth Lobato, will get a look at QB at all, or find other spots?

What do you guys think of Josh Moten? There are some out there that think he will turn some heads at QB. Thoughts?

Really like Moten's athleticism, still a bit unsure about him as a QB. Kinda wondering if he could be a WR down the line.

Finally, I just watched this vid. I have just one word:

YES!

please tell Clark Evans not to kick my a$$. there is room for many great players on the buffs, and I look forward to having the season we've been waiting for in 2010. A fitting bookend to the 1990 season.

Aside from Cody, Hawk seems to favor athletic QB's over the traditional pocket passer (see Hansen, Moten, Evans, Spond).

Perhaps he is hoping to create more of a Florida/Kansas/WVU style offense which requires a QB who can tuck the ball and run. In that case, why not give Moten a shot.

This may also explain why we have a hard time recruiting the prototypical 6'4" pocket passer - the offense may not fit their skill set.

Now is when the fun begins for QB recruiting. We should start seeing the dominoes fall for all the top guys. Scroggins, Heaps, Hinder, Montana and others are all being recruited by many of the same schools.

Hinder-Really likes Cal with other schools on and off his leaderboard. He is the #1 target on our board and one of only three QBs we have offered.

Scroggins-Considered the best QB in California for this cycle, he has been getting offers from all over the place lately. We have offered several of his teammates (as have many schools), and ESPN has listed an offer from us on a couple different occasions. In any event, he seems to favor Cal, Washington, and Tennessee.

Heaps-Had a very good day in a camp over the weekend, Hinder was inconsistent in the same camp. Think this race ultimately comes down to Washington, BYU, and Cal (darkhorse).

Montana-This one should come down to Notre Dame and Stanford. With his dad's ties to ND, that is the big draw but apparently he really likes Harbaugh.

Dallas Lloyd-Prospect out of Utah that Stanford really likes. May be just a matter of time before he commits.

So, as you can see, the situation is pretty muddled right now. If end up striking out on Hinder, here are some other guys to keep an eye on:

Nottingham had a terrific weekend with the camps in the Bay area (same camps with Hinder and Heaps). He has been getting serious buzz lately.

Moten will be a DB by the end of his freshman year IMO. I really like Evans though.

Does Hansen get passed over by Evans or Moten? Kind of like Ballenger getting passed over by Hansen.

It's possible, but a lot has to happen. From most accounts Hansen is progressing, so he's got a two-year head start on Evans. Evans will have to come in and blow people away to get a sniff of the field this year.

It will be interesting, though, if Hinder comits to CU in September. In that situation, I could see the coaches taking off Evans' redshirt to allow some spacing between him and Hinder.

Has Hansen's broken thumb slowed his development?

I only see one years difference not two.

Hansen, couldn't beat out Cody, why not move to the younger player?

Not really ready to give up on him. Just that he is only one year behind Cody, he didn't really impress this spring and the new guys are coming in.

Ballenger was in a similar position and it seemed they bypassed him for the younger player. So it was just a thought.

The program seems to move on to the next years players if significant progress is not seen.

Just a question to the board.

Moten or Evans could end up at another position (potentially both will) and it's too early to say from my perspective since I've only seen film. Both are good athletes for sure so I like the options we have here. We'll have to see how they develop.

Hansen is still developing and could end up very good also. He's been a D-1 football player all of 8 months, and in that time, we changed the offense and now the offensive coordinator..... In those 8 months, he was a scout teamer for 2 and a film watcher (i.e. no practicing allowed) for 3.5 months. He had all of about 2, maybe 3 months, in the system working with real practices with real plays and real humans.

We'll see what these two freshmen can do in about 2-3 years. In the meantime, we need to get at least one legit QB in every single class. Neuheisel went his last 4-5 years without getting one and that was the beginning of the end.

Lastly, Hinder is less than a proven "can't miss" prospect. He's done very little at Steamboat HS to warrant his 4 stars. He has had some good camps and frankly, some bad ones - according to Rivals.com. I'm a bit uneasy about it to be sure. I hope Hawk has watched him play real football. Camps and drills are one thing, but standing in the pocket when some big uglies are coming at you are a different thing altogether, speaking from my own less than successful experiences. That's when I was introduced to the defensive side of the ball for good...

I have not seen Spond play. I have seen Johnson (Longmont) and Coulter (Cherry Creek) and they both can play the game and have shots at being D-1 QBs. Coulter is off to Stanford, but I hope the Buffs make sure they know what Johnson has before they pass on him. This kid would have been in Fort Collins under Sonny for sure. He will possibly get passed over by the Lambs now that they exclusively recruit Florida.

Nope. A JC QB is out of the question imo. Cody is a JR and Hansen is a SOPH.

Spond has impressed at camps and now Longmont's Johnson is also getting some pub from a recent California camp. Both can play other positions and I think will be at least starters somewhere, and both have some upside as QB's down the road.

Will be interesting to see if CU offers.

Yeah, I cannot see a JUCO being a viable option right now either. I think we'll target a Cali QB, seems to be the trend.

I really want us to get Johnson, I don't even know why I just have a hunch he'll someday be a good D1 QB. Sounds like a real gamer.

My concern is that 2 of these guys, Moten and Spond, are not ever projected as QBs by some coaches. The reason they are coming to CU is that Hawkins says he will give them a shot at QB. That is all well and good but I would really like it if CU would sign a player who looks like he will play QB.

Clark Evans????

Clark Evans????

i think he's saying why are we taking guys who probably won't be qb but selling them on CU based on a shot at playing the position (ie wasted schollies). however, these guys can play multiple other positions. i honestly think moten will have a real shot at earning a qb spot though, check out his vids.

I don't think it is a waste of scholarships bringing in Spond and Moten as QBs initially. We are not going to expect them to see significant playing time from day one either way, so let them get their shot at QB. It usually works itself out after the redshirt year anyway.

I happen to think Spond could be a tremendous H-back in time. Still think Moten ultimately ends up at DB, but maybe he proves me wrong.

totally agree with you, just trying to somewhat dissect what blackngold said.
