Toby Veal? Deeper probblems with Jeff. Sorry.

Curious what the take is on Veal. The obvious question is that why the hell didn't Jeff play him until like 5 games left year? The obvious answer is that Jeff didn't feel he could contribute within his offensive system until he "got it".

I guess my questions to anybody who still cares about CU basketball are this:

1. Why should I believe Jeff can recruit to make us top of the heap in this Big 12 conference?

2. If he does get good recruits, why would they buy into his system?

I never felt Bzdelik was the right guy for this job because he had no track record of recruiting. I'm no psychic, I'm not that smart, and he's no recruiter.

I know some of you guys will accuse me of blasphemy, but I've been paying for CU basketball tickets for more than 30 years. Bzdelik is no better than Harrington, Patton, etc.

He can't recruit in the top half of the Big 12. Why does this need to be complicated?

he is better... veal was no where near ready to play its a shame hes gone but i wont shed a tear

I've been following the program for a while now. Not quiet as long as Bisonic though. I guess that's why I have tempered my expectations with the MBB program.

I don't think anyone can seriously expect anyone to come here and start to out recruit any school in the Big 12. Even the bottom half.

and so it continues. what is it going to take to get some stability in the program? 2 steps forward, 2 steps back. another year with inexperienced guys forced into action and a short bench (both figuratively and literally, I'm afraid). depth won't be a problem for us next year, because we won't have any. :sad2:

Veal was a top 150 player according to some.

our roster has been a freak show of class holes, attritions and imbalances ever since Rico's "year of the 9 seniors"....the 3 6'11" guys....and nothing to show from the "vaunted" Vanwright, Silas, Bay class...to Bz's own contribution to either encourage departures or be unable to keep guys here.

i blame the lack of practice facilities.

I'd say 2 steps forward one step back...but we really haven't made any steps forward

Just stoping by to 3rd the notion of grades being the issue....that's everythign I heard of why he didn't play, because Coach Bz wouldn't let him practice and made him study and get his grades up first....he started doing better towards the end of the season, practiced more & got more game time as a result...but obviously just couldn't cut it in the end

It's a shame he's leaving, and I wish him well. It sounded like he had a long way to go to be ready for all the different aspects of college when he arrived (non-basketball). I still think our depth will be solid next year. Good luck Toby, and GO BUFFS!!

The obvious question was already answered when he started getting playing time towards the end of the season. He was having trouble in the classroom and Bzz and staff made him get his work done before seeing floor time. In addition Bzz said they weren't satisfied with his effort in practice. When both areas started to come around he got playing time. Obvious question(once again already answered months ago) answered.

I just received an e-mail from Dave Plati. Toby Veal is leaving to be closer to his child, born in 2007. Its just been posted on the CU website. Being away from her was apparently rough on Toby. Good luck to him.

This can't help our APR. I think basketball was already under the gun there.

The depth will be there, it will just be terribly young.

Bummer. Sucks Veal is leaving. Was looking forward to seeing what he could do next season. Good luck to him wherever he ends up.

per the release Veal pulled a Celestine(fathered a child) and is going to take care of her

“After signing Toby Veal in November 2007, he revealed to me that he had fathered a daughter,” Bzdelik said. “Throughout the past school year, Toby struggled with being too far from his newborn. Consequently, he has decided to return closer to home so he can be with her on a regular basis.

Dude he's been here two years.. Give him some time to get his players in here.. Its disappointing players are leaving but sometimes it takes time.. Jeff can coach.. He proved it at Air Force..

AFA made the NCAA Tournament before Jeff with the same players.

Jeff never made the NCAA at AFA.

I do think "Jeff can coach" but i'm tired of seeing factually incorrect stuff about him at AFA. AFA had better post-season success before BZ.

He was at Air Force two years also, which means he coached up the other guy's players really well.

Bzdelik is a really good basketball coach but he hasn't shown he can recruit top tier players. And now it appears he has a hard time keeping players in the program, for whatever reason.

My original knock on Jeff sticks - we got our "X's and O's" coach but that alone will not win in the Big 12. Above all else, a winning coach in the Big 12 needs to be a great recruiter. That's the one thing Jeff is not, so far anyway. I hope it changes but so far I see a Bobby Knight-type guy, where in the long run he has a well coached team that at best will be in the middle of the pack.

It wasn't that long ago when our expectations were a lot bigger than middle of the pack.

If you're shooting for facts, Bzdelik took the 05-06 AFA team to the NCAAs.

i'm glad you proved your point with a neg and a response. do you wear diapers, too?

i'll be sure and remember you aren't just a regular poster....but one who is always right. huzzah for you, the enforcer.

BZ is a good coach, but his success at AFA was with Joe Scott's class. he hasn't shown he can recruit with the rest of the Big XII.....6 of the top 25 Rivals classes are Big XII teams....we just lost the 1 top 150 player we've had in 3 years. teams like UT, ATM, OU, OSU, KSU, KU are hauling in 3-4 top 150 players every year. people talk about us being an NCAA team in a year or two, how?

Bzdelik has recruited much, much bettern then Patton imo. Better coaching hopefully takes us to the tournament

how do you figure?

don't get me wrong, I like Jeff. he was not my first choice to be CU's coach, but he's a good basketball coach.

we've finished dead last in the conference the previous 3 years. that's a fact i think merits being critical about the coach and program. i drunk posted above and mister know it all corrected me, OK. but, still, anyone who is really jazzed about the direction the program is going is talking about being marginally better than dead last....based on recruiting and such. an area we aren't competitive according to the "almighty ranking sites".

it was time for a change with Patton but his teams were never as bad as we are now. if we win 6-7 games in conference next year i think most realistic fans would call that unabashed success. say that out loud to yourself, 6 and 10 in conference is success. we aren't far removed from beating 2 Final Four teams in the CEC.

Patton had his thumb up his ass the last two years he was in boulder when it came to recruiting

Patton did bring in some good players to Boulder. But he wasn't consistent with recruiting. He'd bring in David Harrison and surround him with mediocre players imo. He killed any kind of momentum with his inconsistency.

But people are right when they question Bzdelik's recruiting. He hasn't brought in any players near the caliber that Patton lured to Boulder. Jeff's players seem like a bunch of role players. We won't win the Big 12 with those kind of kids.
