Anyone else concerned we only have one commit?

i don't think it's too far to suggest that there's a lot of "wait and see" about this year's Buffs. win 8 games we are pulling in 4 star guys who want some PT at an up and coming program at one of the best campuses in America. win 5 games again and you are looking at a lame duck coach who's been to Macchu Piccu.

No doubt. Just funny because the question is all over the rivals board today. I felt like I was reading something from June 2007 or June 2008.

Or June 2010, or June 2011...

It's instinctual, like the swallows returning to Capistrano or lemmings rushing over a cliff...

ehh, last year and the year before we got our first commit in June, if I remember right. So we're ahead of schedule!

In all seriousness, after glancing at scout and rivals, it does appear that an awfully large portion of the highest rated QB's in the country are already committed... =/

Doooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

QBs usually commit early. Really hope we make a run at Brett Nottingham. He has been impressive at a couple camps now.

I'm concerned....

To bad we don't have Alfred Williams to recruit for CU!

His personality would be dynamic in getting players, especially in Texas!

(Denver Post) Hawkins ranked 48th in recruiting last year, that's the same ranking he got his first year, with the Buffs. I would expect to improve every year on recruiting by how lowly we're ranked.

Excuse me for a moment... :bang:

I've also noticed that schools like Florida and Texas already have their natives committed. And Colorado just has one native??? Where is the school loyalty:cry:

What's wrong with this picture?:violin:

Last year we came off a bowl game and a big improvement year, and still aimed really high, but had a very slow start.

Hawk has predictably followed the same recipe this year and we won't see much in terms of big recruits until we make some waves in our 2009 schedule.

Bottom line, most of our 2009 class didn't have offers to CU come September. The guys we are offering right now will want to see some sign that the Buffs are coming around and thus Hawk will be here for a few more years.

This year's success will be huge to recruiting. Hope we don't lose any more key position players that need to go study Hip-Hop.

I would not worry about it, so you get a four or five star to commit early, then he changes his mind come December, I would rather have a kid say yes in Nov. You all will be OK

Damn did I just type that? I better get to a A.A. Meeting

Yep. I just don't see Hawkins staff having much clout right now. I'm also not sure his wait and give a recruit plenty of time to make his own decision strategy is practical in the current recruiting climate.

The approach to recruiting is always in flux. A good coach has to be in step with the trends today and not confined to his personal tradition.

He gave Wallace, Blackmon, Smith and Celestine plenty of time to make their decisions and not be rushed or forced, and look at the result. Some kids stay, some kids leave, it's just that simple. The same is true that some kids give verbals then back out and some don't.

I would personally like to see him turn the early aggressiveness up a notch and get more in step with most of the upper tier programs that already have several verbals. It creates momentum and I think it is good for the kids already on the roster too see excitement outside of the program.

It would also offset some of the "negative" created by the recent departures the program has had.

D ooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

If every personal opinion or observation that doesn't exude total, blind confidence in the program is Dooooooooommmmmmm then yeah, I can pony up to being guilty of being a calamity howler. Oh and I can live with it too!

I actually agree with you Swish on early recruiting somewhat. I think this staff is still a little too focused at times on getting the big finish. Particularly in a state like Texas where UT and A&M are really focused on wrapping up the majority of their classes early, you need to be in on kids early. I think the staff recognizes this. The 2011 class has several kids who have had contact with CU already.

In reality, unless you're a traditional power like Michigan or you have a loyal in-state fanbase, you need wins before players will commit early. I'm hoping a very good 2009 season will pay dividends for the 2010 class getting off to a fast start. Several of the top in-state prospects for that class will most likely be deciding before Summer. If we have a nice in-state foundation, we're going to be in very good shape.

What has this got to do with recruiting? Wallace, Blackmon and Celestine were all unique situations and there's no cause for alarm around here on these young guys leaving....

It would also offset some of the "negative" created by the recent departures the program has had.

Losing guys such as Blackmon, Wallace, Ballenger.... is pretty much business as usual. Kids leave all the time for reasons such as family concerns, playing time, home-sickness, etc. I'll give you that losing J-Fly is a puzzler, but J-Fly has been an enigma since he stepped on campus. Is he really going to give a program his full attention and be a standout WR somewhere else?

I don't see all this negativity.... just normal attrition. In general, Hawkins has brought in guys who can play football and succeed in college (Katoa the notable exception). Each year, the success rate has been going up (year 1 they obviously took some chances as they had little choice).

The bottom line is that year 1 was thrown together. The staff then had chance to sell kids on the "turnaround" and playing time (like Sarkisian is doing now). We're beyond that. The staff is sticking to their A-List for now as we all know that success on the field will rocket our recruiting forward. Without success on the field, we will be back to B-list, which btw, is the same list Boise State and the Utes have been using. Takes some time to build the program and we are well past sales pitches and we need to start to see improvement on the field for top kids to buy in.

I don't think we are all that far apart on perception.
It has been represented to me that Hawks approach to allowing recruits all the time in the world to commit is in part that they are coming because they really, really want to and therefore will be less inclined to leave. My point in drawing attention to these young men as samples is I don't think this attitude in recruiting really has that much to do with kids leaving. Kids just leave sometimes.

As far as the "negative" hey it's not the end of the world and we know that. But if there was no negative impact in kids leaving there would be no threads about the kids who left or were dismissed on this board with up to 360 responses. :smile2:

OK - I missed your point and it's a valid one. Giving a kid all this time because that means he will come here and stick isn't too valid if we lose our fair share after a year is it?

My own experience has been that most kids that leave either have a very personal situation (sick family member, girlfriend issues, etc) or they realize they are in over their head. In the latter, it's actually better for everyone that they figure it out early and move on.

2010 looked like we were down to about 14 schollies a few months ago and now we have gotten a handful back and I'm very okay with that. The only one that hurts us is J-Fly and his speed was needed, but it's still not clear to me that he was dedicated to improving enough to make much difference next year.

Success rate going up every year? In all sincerity, what success rate?
