New to the Board

The reason I joined this board is to learn as much about the CU football program and school as possible.

CU is one of the top schools that my son is considering.
He`d love to play at USC, but he`s realistic enough to keep all his options open just in case that doesn`t happen.

He wants to go to school somewhere with a good football program, great academics, and a great place to spend four or five years. Science, chemistry in particular, is his favorite subject.
I don`t know anything yet about the academic strengths and weaknesses at CU.

Everyone we`ve talked to loves Boulder.

I`m pretty sure he`s on the recruiting board in the coach`s office, so I know he`ll be talking to the coach`s after September 1st.

I like learning about the football program and school from the fans.
Message boards tell you a lot about the program.
I realize every school is going to have a lot of great fans posting, and also have a few knuckleheads that you wish would just go away.
I`m smart enough to look past that.

I`ll post here as much as I can, and with this terrible economy here in California, I`m sure I`ll have much more time than I want.

This is my son.

Welcome aboard. Rep sent.

We'd love to you son in the black and gold. CU has a long line of K and P's who have done well. Mason Crosby, Tom Rouen, Barry Helton et al.

CU is a "public Ivy", is number one in public school grant recipients from NASA, has more astronaluts than any other school and in general has strong academics. Just wait until you visit.

Thanks for posting! The vids on your son look great, he is a helluva kicker. Even if he doesn't go to CU, we hope he has a successful career and enjoys his time at whatever college he goes to (even USC :smile2:)

Anyway, hang around the boards, talk some football. Make a trip to Boulder (you'll love it) .. and ignore the 'knuckle-heads' and trolls.

One word of advice - don't let him go to Nebraska... under any-circumstances.

hard to be a parent, friend, or relative of a player on boards like this one, from what i can tell...

so, good luck in advance and please remember to take it all with a grain of salt.

one thing to think about is that CU has a long tradition of great kickers and punters. we've had some amazing talent over the years. mason crosby, currently of the green bay packers, was the last superstar kicker we had (in a long line of greats).

Cool.
Is there a list of all the past CU kickers?

I bet kicking at a mile high is incredible. I`ve heard it adds 10 yards to your kick if the weathers right.

Our Physics, Chemistry, and Biology departments are outstanding. If science is your son's emphasis then CU is a very good place to be. Hope you enjoy your visit, when you get to come. Boulder is an amazingly beautiful place. Good luck with the recruiting process!

I`ve been posting on high school football boards for years, so I`m used to all the garbage.

He did get an invite to Nebraska..............and said "No way".

Allsome... your son at least has his head on straight

mason kicked about a 60 yarder in the heat and humidity of miami against the 'canes. that was important in helping dispel the notion that the stats of kickers and punters at CU should be discounted in some way.

as far as the list... at cubuffs.com, you can see lists of all the previous all-americans, all-conference, and award winners...

This is a list off the top of my head of the really good ones from the last 25 years:

Dave Deline K
Barry Helton P (SF 49ers)
Tom Rouen P (Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks)
Neil Voskeritchian K
Mitch Berger P/K (several teams, still in the league with the Steelers)
Mark Mariscal P
John Torp P
Mason Crosby K (Packers)

But CUBuffs.com would probably have the best list. I'm sure they have a list of guys up for positional awards, like the Ray Guy Award.

Ken Culbertson ftw.

Just kidding, I went to high school with Ken. Good guy. Probably could have made it in the NFL but wanted to go into the ministry.

Welcome 7Rock. We're a little unbalanced around here. Don't let that bother you. If you find your way to Boulder for a game this Fall, please feel free to stop by the tailgate.

Forgot about Culbertson. Didn't he try out with the Rams? around 89 or 90? I might be confusing him with somebody else though!

Here's a little help with that list (1985-present):

Punters: Mitch Berger (All-America, NFL), Tom Rouen (All-America, NFL), Keith English (All-America, NFL), Barry Helton (2x All-America, NFL), John Torp (2nd Team All-America)

Kickers: Mason Crosby (All-America, NFL), Mark Mariscal (All-America)

In addition, Jeremy Flores was all-Big XII pk,

Then there is the fact that if your son goes to CU the Buffs will have the best kicking tandem in the country: Van Ginkel & Grossnickel. Sweet.

Isn't Uranus the 7th Rock? Now go get me a beer!

But seriously, I hope the site entertains you and proves to be a valuable resource in the college recruiting process.

Don't hesitate to post any questions that you might have. You'll get an answer from one of the former players, alumni, rivals, students, band members, resident attorneys, accountants, pilots, computer programers, knuckleheads, mooseknuckles, kool-aid drinking homers, pessimists and everyone inbetween.

Google CUatthegame.com and ralphiereport for some decent CU related blogs.

Be sure to check out the Allbuffs search engine function. There are a ton of threads that are otherwise unaccessible. Try searching on posts by user name "Valdezj" if you want to get down to brass tacks recruiting discusions. Search on key word "California" if you want a taste of the Colorado-California provential squabbles. "USC" of "U$C" might be a laugh. Search on "Unicorn" if you want to re-live the Darrell Scott recruiting battle between CU and Texas.

Happy hunting.

I'm pretty sure he went straight into the ministry after college. His father was a pastor, and that was his calling as well. I wasn't his best friend, but he and I were decent enough acquaintances.

Good Info Rodrigo!!!

Oh, and we will love for him to come here, unless he chooses somewhere else, then he is dirt, lousy, 'we didn't want him anyway' and all that jazz.

Just like every other fan board will be.:smile2:

Also understand that while we love football, we have all been here so long that we are like a family, so that means we fight, argue, call each other names (some edited, some modified to get around the filter) and beat on trolls. Great entertainment; maybe not a real credible crossection of the great scholastic institution that is CU.

Does anyone know how the altitude here in Colorado effects the ball yardage-wise during KO's and FG's?

Yes, I had the physics major son explain it to me once. I didn't understand it, but I'll get him to provide the formula again. I did manage to nod wisely as he scribbled numbers and arcs and atmospheric pressure info on a scratch pad.

Basically, altitude helps, but not as much as people think. If it was a HUGE difference maker, every NFL kicker, or NCAA kicker, who comes to Denver or Boulder would have the kick of his life.

Doesn't happen.

Does CU store game balls in a humidor, like the Rox?

Colorado's altitude and greens do add length off of the tee, though.

we should also add in this thread that this site is pretty irreverent and frequently juvenile. some of the pay sites like rivals are more serious overall. this is more like a social thing. but, we do love our Buff football. make no mistake about that at all. the folks here are, for the most part, die-hard Buff fans for life...

it is just a little more light-hearted around here than some sites.

:woot:

Light hearted = cynical, sarcastic, perverse, crude and petulant.

Can you adjust how many PM`s can be stored?

I only had 3 in my inbox......and it said it was full.

If you join up ($15 per year), your inbox magically expands to 50 or something. The 3 is a limit for moochers and newbies.

(been there, done that, coughed up the cash eventually.)
