Cody slam on Josh Smith?

Did anyone else catch this in the DC article about Moyd - they interviewed Cody about the new freshmen WRs:

"Terdema and Jarrod, they're definitely freshmen, but being freshmen, they're further ahead than any guy we've had out here," Hawkins said. "They've got it figured out as people, which was very impressive immediately.
"You know, they show up to their tutors on time, they come to every workout, they're always doing extra. We've never had anybody figure it out that fast. We've had some guys, who just left, who never figured it out."

Was that last comment about Josh Smith perhaps?

Could be any number of guys who never put it together at CU.

Is Celestine back on the roster?

Maybe it is just me, but I'm not sure I like Hansen calling out Kotoa the other day and now this. Best just left alone IMO.

This is a potential side effect of the accountability groups. Guys are going to feel let-down by teamates who do stuff like this. It's natural to be disappointed and it's hard for me to be too critical of a kid who shows his disappointment.

I understand that and I'm not saying it is the end of the world. Just that it is always good to exercise some restraint in giving quotes to the media, on any number of issues.

I sensed a difference in tone here. I didn't see Hansen "calling out" Katoa, just commenting on the situation there. Sounds to me like Cody is pretty clearly saying JS never got it. may be splitting hairs but I don't think Hansen was intending anythign negative and Cody was being a bit more harsh. But I do agree with you BB...lets just keep moving forward.

I think he is busting on Steve Melton, that guy was a slacker. j/k

I really don't know who he's talking about, I am just ready for the season to begin.

Might have been talking about Blackmon, hard to say. On the flip side, it's nice to hear that the newbie wr's are putting in the effort, and that Moyd looks like he's ready to make an impact.

I can't wait for August......

You guys are reading way to much into this IMO. He is simply giving the new guys some props.

"We've had some guys, who just left, who never figured it out."

I would agree, except for that last quote.

This is a true statement and could be directed at several kids over the last 3 years could it not? We have kids leave the program every year because they don't "get it". Every college team does. I don't think he is singling any one person out, he is just stating what we all know. Some kids don't have what it takes to be a student athlete.

You could read that two ways, actually. "just left" meaning that they left recently or "just left" meaning that they simply gave up and left.

I have to say that on first reading it sure sounded to me like he was talking about Josh, though...

or Kai any of the other guys who left or never developed.

Really, the only thing I don't like about the quote is the first line..."they're definately freshman"....since we need 1 or 2 of these "freshman" to look & play like "juniors" this year

I'll interpret as gave up. I don' think he was saying "just left" as in "hint, hint" recently.

Forgot Pat was a captain. I'll edit my post.

Which made it all the more frustrating that he could never quite put it all together. Good character guy, good leader, NFL measurables, decent route runner, stone hands.

Yes, he was a captain. He was also a player who never put it all together on the field.

But not because he did not put in the effort, which Cody's comment clearly was about. He worked hard and was named a team captain, sometimes hard work just is not good enough unfortunately.

I have to agree with Chilly on this part. More props for the young guys is what I got out of it.

It might be better if guys didn't talk to the press, since the Denver media isn't exactly going to have our interests at heart, but I'd rather have guys step up, own their own fates and hold each other to a high standard, it makes it easier for the coaches, especially if both qb's act like leaders. I think this team could be really special.

I think it was a "jab" at Smith for sure and I like it. Personally I think Smith was way overrated. He ran back that kickoff against CSU and then it was like everyone thought he was the next Devin Hester. He was OK but not great. He dropped a lot of balls and ran sloppy patterns.

Cody had to be directing his comment to Josh as Smith is the one who ended up with the bullseye on him when announced he was leaving. As far as the freshman WR's are concerned, If we continue to hear those types of comments from some of the other Cornerbacks, Safeties, & coaches, then we may be in better shape than I thought at WR.

If Cody had said this halfway through the season, it may have looked like he was playing the blame game.

Some texas blog review Josh Smith as electric every time he touched the ball, they went on to mention he was (unfortunately for CU) equally likely to fumble the kickoff on the 2 yard line as he was to run it back.

On that one play i think he did both.

It sure sounded like a jab at Smith...and why not? Don't Smith's ex-teammates have the right to call him out for quitting on them? Sure, a guy's gotta do what he's gotta do, yadda yadda yadda, but, in the end, there must be plenty of Buffs pissed off about it.

Every interview doesn't have to be a "Nuke" LaLoosh special.
