I think this is an interesting spot for the Buffs. For a position that usually goes to upperclassmen, we are really young.

What do you expect this year?

I really liked what I saw from Mahnke last year. Impressive for a true freshmen to hit the way he did. If he is athletic enough, he could be a pretty good player.

Who will be our nickle back?

Interesting fact:

Perkins was the first commit for 2007.
Mahnke was the first commit for 2008.

I thought that maybe Orms was our first commit for 09, but now I'm thinking he didn't have an offer? Maybe it was Darden.

It was Darden. I like Mahnke and Perkins as well. Perkins put on a lot of muscle since last season, and IMO he is as good if not better then Dykes.

I'm really looking forward to watching Polk at the Safety position

Both Mahnke and Perkins have plenty of game experience, smarts and talent to play the saftey positions strongly.

Anyone who doesn't consider them the returning "starters" from last year wasn't paying attention! You listening, Mizzou doofus?

I think we'll see C. Brown at nickle, with Jimmy Smith and Burney at the corners. With as many 3 and 4 WR formations as we'll see this year, C. Brown will be invaluable again.
the log jam at corner should be interesting. I am wondering if we will see the starters change week to week depending on matchups. Ex: when playing the Shipley's of the world, you will see a lot of C.Brown for his quicks. When playing the taller wideouts, more burney. I would think J.Smith is gonna start no matter what tho if he plays up to his physical potential.

As far as safety goes, I think Mahnke is a lock to start (can't wait to go to practice and see for myself!). Depending on how Polk plays, he could push Perkins, who was solid last year, if unspectactular. Depth after those 3 is scary.

I think our safeties the next few years have the potential to be very good. Dykes stepped up and filled a major void for us the last couple years, but he really was not a Big 12 caliber safety. Walters played well when healthy, but that was always week to week. The experience Perkins and Mahnke got down the stretch last year should be invaluable. As Snow said, the one big issue is depth. We cannot afford any injuries there.

I think (hope?) Polk will play a lot this year. There's too much athletic talent for this kid to stay on the sidelines. He needs to be out there.

I haven't heard much about him since he didn't participate in spring. I agree he is very talented but he sure hasn't had much time at the position to get up to speed while in Boulder from what I can tell.

Hope you are right, though. He is a great talent and a great kid. We need him to be good!
