The one that got away

I followed his recruitment. Good kid, good kicker. Still holds a few Colo state records, I think.

I wish him well.

I might have to start a thread the guys who were are glad did not sign with CU. Woods from UCLA and Williams from Nebraska are two that come to mind first.

I'll add a guy that ended up playing baseball-Darnell McDonald. Guy would have been an incredible RB.

Any other Colorado Players you can think of that could have helped the Buffs?

Marcus Houston, RB, CSU
Craig Ochs QB, Montana

How about guys I wish had not signed with CU?

Marcus Houston, RB, GW
Craig Ochs, QB, Fairview
Katie Hnida, K, Hell

I was gonna say Darnell, but since he never played college football I left him off.

For real, I would say:

Phil Loadholt (CU got him, but he never got in and then went to OU)
Zach Latimer
Casey Studdard
Jeff Byers
Zac Robinson
Bo Scaife
Lenwhale White
Austin Hinder

Other than Robinson, they all went to either UT, OU or USC, so it's not like CU lost them to small-time programs. But I still want to keep them in Colorado

I agree with your list, but if we're talking about guys that were close to signing with CU, I think only Latimer and Loadholt fit that bill. Byers will be my all-time "CO HS player that I wish went to CU" recruit, but whatever.

As far as CO HS guys though in addition to your list - Brian Kelly went to Overland, Alex Smith of Mullen (TE Stanford, not QB of Utah), Alex Molden (Oregon, went to a school Springs), Calais Campbell (Miami from South), and Chris Sanders (Montbello to Ohio State).

There were other guys that would have been nice, but didn't do too much in college - Ryan Clement and Scott Bently come to mind. What happened to Butch Lewis, Lamarr Houston and Chris Guarnerno (who once committed early to the Buffs)?

Pretty sure Lamarr Houston is starting for Texas at DT.

You can look at this question from three different angles

1) The kids who we knew were going to be good and we either lost the recruiting battle for them or in some cases (Barnett had a number of these) we just didn't bother to try very hard. These are the Latimers, Byers, Lamar Houstons, etc.

2) The kids who kind of flew under our radar and didn't get recruited very hard if at all that later became big time players. Vincent Jackson of Northern Colorado and the Chargers is an example of one of these.

3) The kids who we either went hard after and couldn't get in because of grades/admissions/etc. like Loadholt or the RB out of Mullen I think his name was Greer 4* ended up JC then cancer unfortunately or the guys who we just did not even bother with because we had a pretty good idea that even if they did somehow get in they couldn't make it with the required academic load.

A few like Calais Cambell or Cory Ross kind of fit in between some of these catagories.

If I remember correctly, I think Guarnero actually saw action for Cal last year.

Andrew Walter of ASU (no interest out of HS, but supposedly was interested in transferring about the time Ochs signed)

Has anybody mentioned Terry Miller who played RB at OSU back in the 80s?
